You can start The Talos Principle II without finishing the first game, but playing the original first gives you context for the series’ recurring puzzle mechanics and questions about identity, purpose, and civilization. If you want the updated presentation, The Talos Principle: Reawakened is another way into the first game; Croteam says its core gameplay and storytelling principles remain unchanged.
What is The Talos Principle?
Croteam describes the 2014 original as “a first-person puzzle game in the tradition of philosophical science fiction.” You awaken in a world where ancient ruins sit alongside advanced technology, then face a creator’s challenge to solve increasingly complex puzzles. The game uses that premise to ask questions about identity, faith, and purpose, as well as humanity, technology, and civilization. Its non-linear world lets you choose your route through the puzzles rather than follow a single fixed path.

The official factsheet frames the central questions this way: “Who are you? What is your purpose And what are you going to do about it?” You do not need to memorize the lore or arrive with an interpretation. The original’s ideas emerge alongside the puzzle-solving.
How does the first game connect to The Talos Principle II?
Croteam calls the sequel “the next step forward in the story.” Biological humanity is extinct, but human culture continues in a city of robots. The sequel follows an adventure involving a mysterious megastructure and shifts the series’ questions toward reason, civilization, and whether humanity’s mistakes will be repeated. That gives it a thematic bridge from the first game’s questions about identity, faith, and purpose to a society trying to decide what kind of future to build.

Some puzzle mechanics from the original return, while the sequel adds abilities such as gravity manipulation and mind transference. The story is character-driven, and Croteam says it has multiple endings. Its environments and challenges also broaden the scale: the studio describes more than a dozen all-new environments, alongside puzzles of varying difficulty, metapuzzles, and Gold puzzles.
What should you expect from the sequel’s puzzles?
Recognizing the original’s mechanics can make the sequel’s returning tools feel familiar, but the new abilities change how puzzles can be approached. A useful way to think about the sequel is as a combination of established puzzle language and new ways to manipulate the world—not simply a repeat of the first game’s challenges.

You also do not have to solve everything to finish. Croteam says players can complete the sequel without solving every puzzle, or pursue complete mastery. Optional challenges, including Gold puzzles, are there for players who want to push further.
Which version of the first game should you play?
The Talos Principle (2014)
The original was released on 11 December 2014. Croteam’s factsheet lists PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, and Nintendo Switch among its platforms. Current availability can vary by platform and territory, so check the store for your region.

The Talos Principle: Reawakened (2025)
Reawakened updates the presentation and adds quality-of-life revisions, a puzzle editor, developer commentary, and the new story chapter “In the Beginning.” Croteam says, “The core gameplay and storytelling principles remain unchanged.” Choose it if you want the updated presentation; if you already own the original, you can start there instead. Neither version is established as mandatory for understanding the sequel.

No prerequisite is established in Croteam’s official description. Road to Gehenna is a separate expansion following Uriel, Elohim’s messenger, on a mission of mercy and redemption. It contains four episodes, advanced puzzles, new characters, and a society with its own history and philosophy. Treat it as optional additional story and challenge for players who want to spend more time in the first game’s world, not required homework before The Talos Principle II.

- For the fullest story context: Play The Talos Principle or The Talos Principle: Reawakened, then continue to The Talos Principle II.
- If you want extra content first: Add Road to Gehenna after the original game. It is optional.
- If you want to jump straight into the sequel: You can do so, but the first game provides context for returning mechanics and the series’ earlier questions about identity and purpose.
