Capturing a large monster and catching endemic life are separate activities in Monster Hunter Wilds. To capture an eligible large monster, weaken it, trap it with a compatible Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap, then use tranquilizers while it is held. To catch endemic wildlife, use the Slinger’s Capture Net.
How to capture a large monster
- Check the quest and target. A “hunt” objective may allow capture; a “slay” objective does not. Some monsters cannot be trapped at all, so check the current quest rules and the target’s entry in the in-game Field Manual. GamesRadar’s capture guide explains the objective distinction and trap exceptions.
- Weaken the monster until it is near defeat. A skull icon beside the monster on the minimap can indicate that it is ready to capture. Limping or follower dialogue can also be clues, but neither guarantees that the monster is weak enough. The guides do not establish a precise health threshold.
- Set a trap the monster can be caught in. Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps can both be used, but compatibility varies by target. Check the Field Manual before choosing; neither type is universally best.
- Tranquilize it while it is trapped. Use Tranq Bombs or Tranq Ammo after the trap holds the monster. PowerPyx says two Tranq Bombs are usually needed, but that count should not be assumed to apply identically to every tranquilizer method. The capture can fail if the monster is not weakened enough or escapes before the tranquilizer takes effect.
Making the capture items
PowerPyx’s guide, dated February 26, 2025, lists these recipes and says Trap Tools are sold at the Provisions Stockpile. Recipes may change with updates, so verify them in the in-game crafting list:

Check trap resistance before you commit
PowerPyx lists Rey Dau, Zoh Shia, and Gypceros as immune to Shock Traps, and Jin Dahaad and Zoh Shia as immune to Pitfall Traps. This list may not be exhaustive or current for every game version. GamesRadar also notes that some monsters resist particular traps; consult the Field Manual for the target you are hunting.

How to catch endemic life
Use the Slinger with the Capture Net, aiming at endemic wildlife rather than a large monster. A successful catch earns Guild Points and contributes to the Endemic Life Field Guide. PlayStation’s Monster Hunter Wilds starter guide describes the net as a way to catch endemic wildlife. Exact button inputs, range, and timing depend on the controls and creature; use the in-game control guide and the creature’s information rather than assuming one universal method.

Capture or slay: what to check first
- Quest objective: confirm that the task allows a capture rather than requiring a kill.
- Monster eligibility: check whether the target can be trapped.
- Trap compatibility: check whether it resists Shock Traps, Pitfall Traps, or both.
- Reward expectations: capture and slay reward chances vary by monster. The available guides do not establish a universal rule that capture always gives more or better materials; check the Field Guide’s drop information for the target.
