What is officially known right now
Nintendo announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves on March 2, 2026. The games are planned for a simultaneous worldwide launch in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement describes an open world made up of windswept islands and a large ocean whose ecosystems support Pokémon adapted to the region.
Nintendo’s announcement says: “Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.” The Pokémon Company describes the setting as “an open world to explore, with beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow.”

The announcement also mentions special Pikachu variants. It does not identify a Dragon Pokémon among the revealed species.
Can you catch the new Dragon Pokémon?
There is no confirmed Dragon Pokémon to catch at this time. Official material has not provided a name, artwork, type combination, habitat, encounter table, story role, or capture mechanic for one.

Because no species has been announced, players cannot yet know whether a Dragon Pokémon will be:
- A wild encounter on an island or in the ocean.
- A gift from a character or a story reward.
- A fossil, special event, or post-game Pokémon.
- An evolution of another revealed or unrevealed species.
- Exclusive to Pokémon Winds, Pokémon Waves, or available in both games.
The open-world island and ocean setting establishes the kind of environment the games will contain, but it does not establish a Dragon Pokémon’s habitat. A Dragon could eventually be associated with a particular island, weather state, ocean area, quest, or late-game region—or none of those. No official source has selected one of these possibilities.

Where does the Dragon Pokémon spawn?
No spawn location has been announced. The words “windswept islands” and “vast ocean” describe the world at a high level; they are not a confirmation that a Dragon Pokémon appears on an island, in the water, in the sky, or in a specific biome.

How would you evolve it?
No evolution method has been disclosed because no Dragon Pokémon or evolution family has been disclosed. There is no confirmed evolution level, item, move, friendship threshold, trading requirement, time-of-day condition, location trigger, or environmental mechanic.
It is also unknown whether the eventual Dragon Pokémon will evolve at all. Some Pokémon are single-stage species, while others evolve once or twice. Assuming that every newly introduced Dragon must evolve would create a mechanic that the announcement has not promised.

Evolution details that remain unknown
- The Pokémon’s pre-evolution, if it has one.
- The number of stages in its family.
- The level or experience requirement, if level-based.
- Any item, held item, move, friendship value, trade, battle condition, or special location.
- Whether evolution can be cancelled or repeated with an item.
- Whether different forms or variants use different conditions.
Consequently, no legitimate answer can currently tell you to train it to a particular level, teach it a particular move, give it an item, or raise its friendship.

A precise catch-and-evolve guide needs at least an identified species and a published mechanic. Without those, a claimed level or location cannot be checked against an official Pokédex, game manual, or in-game data.
Fan art, trailer interpretations, leaks, placeholder names, and predictions may be interesting, but they do not establish what will be in the released games. A creature that resembles a Dragon, appears briefly in promotional footage, or is inferred from the island setting should not be treated as a confirmed Pokémon until The Pokémon Company or Nintendo names it officially.
The same caution applies to version claims. The games are announced as a pair, but no Dragon-related difference between Winds and Waves has been published. A guide should not direct players to buy one version for a supposed exclusive without an official source.
How to check for a real announcement
When new information is published, verify the complete chain from species identity to mechanic rather than relying on a headline alone. A trustworthy update should provide several of the following:

- An official name. The Pokémon should be named by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company, not only by a fan nickname or an image caption.
- Clear identification. Look for an official image, video appearance, Pokédex entry, or other material that distinguishes the species from an environmental effect or an unnamed character.
- Encounter information. A habitat, quest, event, or other official instruction should explain how the Pokémon becomes available.
- Evolution information. If it evolves, the announcement or game documentation should state the trigger, such as a level, item, move, trade, friendship condition, or location.
- Version and release qualifications. Check whether the information applies to both games, a particular edition, a limited event, or a specific region.
Until those details appear, the only accurate status is “not announced.”
What can you prepare before release?
There is no Dragon-specific preparation to complete yet. The confirmed practical requirement is access to Nintendo Switch 2, because both games are planned for that platform and are scheduled for 2027.
You can follow official announcements for:
- The Dragon Pokémon’s name and type or type combination.
- A regional Pokédex entry or first gameplay demonstration.
- Island, ocean, weather, or story requirements for encountering it.
- Evolution instructions and any required item or move.
- Differences between Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves.
- Release timing, preorder information, and the final game listings.
Do not spend in-game resources, choose a version, or plan a training route around an unverified Dragon claim. There is no official evidence yet that any particular preparation will be useful.

“What level does it evolve?”
No evolution level has been announced, and it is not yet confirmed that the Pokémon evolves.
“Do I need an item or special move?”
No item, move, friendship requirement, trade, or other evolution condition has been disclosed.
What would change this answer?
A future official announcement could change the status as soon as it names a Dragon Pokémon or publishes a Pokédex entry. At that point, a reliable guide could document its habitat, encounter requirements, capture strategy, evolution family, and any differences between the two games.
For now, the responsible answer is limited but clear: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are announced for 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, yet no new Dragon Pokémon or Dragon evolution method has been officially revealed.
