To change a movie’s soundtrack or subtitles, start the Blu-ray and use the disc player’s playback controls. To change where the PS5 sends audio—such as to a TV, headset, soundbar, or AV receiver—open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. These are separate control layers: Sony says some apps, including the disc player, have their own audio settings that should be prioritized.
Which setting should I change: the PS5 output or the Blu-ray soundtrack?
Use the PS5’s Audio Output menu to control the console’s audio route and output format. Use the disc player’s controls during playback to choose among the soundtrack, subtitles, or audio modes that the movie provides.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This distinction matters when a movie plays in the wrong language or a connected sound system behaves differently than expected. A console-wide output setting determines how audio is sent to the selected device; it does not replace the Blu-ray’s own choices for languages and tracks. Sony specifically advises prioritizing an app’s own audio settings when it has them, including those of the disc player.
For language, subtitles, or an alternate track
- Start the Blu-ray and wait until the movie is playing.
- Open the disc player’s playback controls.
- Choose the soundtrack, subtitle, or audio-mode option you want from the choices available on that disc.
The available choices depend on the disc. If the language or track you want is not offered in the player’s controls, the console’s Audio Output menu cannot add it.

For a TV, headset, soundbar, or receiver
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output to select the console’s output device and adjust the available routing and format options. These settings apply to console audio output, rather than selecting a movie’s language.
How do I change PS5 audio output settings?
Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output. The menu includes the output device, automatic device switching, HDMI Device Type, AV-amplifier channel count and speaker positions, headphone output, and Audio Format (Priority).
Choose the output device
Select the device that should receive sound. Depending on your setup, that may be the display, a headset, or audio equipment connected through HDMI. If you switch between devices, review automatic device switching so the PS5’s behavior matches how you use them.
Set HDMI and amplifier options to match the connection
HDMI Device Type and the AV-amplifier channel and speaker-position options are for configuring HDMI audio equipment. Choose settings that correspond to the equipment and speaker layout actually in use; these controls do not change which soundtrack the movie plays.

Check headphone output and Audio Format (Priority)
Use the headphone output setting when sound should go to headphones. Audio Format (Priority) is the console’s output-format control. If a particular disc offers its own audio modes, choose the disc-level option in the player rather than assuming this console menu selects the movie’s track.
How do I start Blu-ray playback on PS5?
Insert a supported Blu-ray or DVD. Sony says the Disc Player appears in the PS5 media home and playback can begin from there.
Recommended Free Tools
- Insert the disc into a PS5 with a compatible disc drive.
- Open the Disc Player from the media home if playback does not start automatically.
- Once the movie is playing, open its playback controls to choose available soundtrack, subtitle, or audio-mode options.
Sony lists these supported media types: Ultra HD Blu-ray; Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE; DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW; as well as AVCHD and CPRM support. A disc’s format and condition both matter: a disc that is damaged, recorded poorly, or encoded in a way the console cannot handle may not play reliably.
Can a PS5 Digital Edition play Blu-rays?
It depends on the model and whether it has a compatible disc drive. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media; Sony says a CFI-ZDD1-series drive can be added to CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000-series consoles.

Why is there no sound from a Blu-ray on PS5?
First check the simple output path: make sure the TV or audio device is not muted, then confirm the PS5 is set to send sound to an HDMI device. If the setup includes an AV receiver, switch, or another intermediary, temporarily connect the console directly to the display to isolate whether that equipment or connection is involved.
- Confirm the TV or connected audio device is powered on and unmuted.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and check that the selected output device is appropriate and set to HDMI when using HDMI audio.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display, temporarily removing intermediary audio or video devices from the connection.
- Try another HDMI cable or a different HDMI port.
- Check for and install available PS5 system software updates.
Change one connection or setting at a time where practical. If sound returns after bypassing an intermediary device, that helps narrow the problem to the removed connection path; it does not by itself establish whether the device, its configuration, or a cable caused the issue.
If only one movie has a problem
Check the player’s controls for a different available soundtrack or audio mode. A disc-specific track choice is separate from the console’s output routing. If the disc does not play reliably, inspect it for dust or scratches and try another supported Blu-ray or DVD; that helps distinguish a disc-specific problem from an issue affecting playback generally.

What should I do if the PS5 cannot read a Blu-ray?
Start with the media and format, then work through the console’s recovery options. Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, and recommends checking the disc and trying another Blu-ray or DVD when read failures occur.
- Check the format: confirm it is one of the supported video-disc types. A burned disc is not supported.
- Inspect and clean the disc: dust and scratches can affect playback. Use a soft cloth to clean it.
- Try another disc: compare with another supported Blu-ray or DVD to see whether the problem is limited to one title.
- Consider recording quality: Sony notes that recording quality and software encoding can also cause playback problems.
- Use Safe Mode if needed: Sony lists cache clearing and database repair among the steps to try for read failures.
A disc that was recorded, finalized, or encoded in a way the console does not support may fail even when it looks undamaged. Trying another known-supported disc is a useful check before treating a single disc failure as a console fault.

For troubleshooting, connect the PS5 directly to the display by HDMI before adding a receiver, switch, or other intermediary back into the chain. That makes it easier to identify whether the basic console-to-display route works.
If direct HDMI works but the full setup does not, reconnect the intermediary equipment and check the selected output device and HDMI-related settings. If direct HDMI still has no sound, a different HDMI cable or display port is a reasonable next check. Sony identifies a faulty HDMI cable as one possible cause of audio problems, and says the PS5 includes an HDMI 2.1 cable and recommends it for high-performance features.

How should I diagnose the problem by symptom?
| Symptom | First place to check | Next useful check |
|---|---|---|
| The movie plays in the wrong language | Disc player playback controls | See whether the disc offers the desired soundtrack. |
| No audio from any output | Mute state and Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Try a direct HDMI connection, another cable, or another port. |
| Sound works with direct HDMI but not through the usual setup | Intermediary receiver, switch, or connection path | Reconnect components one at a time and check HDMI output settings. |
| One disc fails but another works | Disc condition and format | Clean it, check for damage, and consider recording quality or encoding. |
| Several supported discs fail to read | Console software and disc-reading recovery | Update system software; consider Safe Mode cache clearing or database repair. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PS5 play audio CDs?
No. Sony lists audio CDs among the media PS5 consoles cannot play; disc playback support is for supported Blu-ray and DVD formats.
Does a PS5 need internet to play a protected Blu-ray?
Sony’s manual says AACS encryption keys for protected Blu-rays may need renewal, and that the key renews automatically when the console is connected to the internet. The manual does not describe internet access as a requirement for every Blu-ray playback session.

Why does one recorded disc fail even though it looks clean?
A clean surface does not rule out recording-quality or software-encoding problems. Sony also notes that scratches or dust can interfere with playback, so checking the disc format and trying another disc can help separate media issues from console issues.
