Short answer: Open BlueStacks 5 Settings, use Display for orientation, resolution, DPI, cursor, and interface scaling; use Graphics for rendering, ASTC textures, and GPU selection; and use Performance for FPS and VSync. Save your changes and restart BlueStacks when prompted. Renderer options vary by BlueStacks version and Android instance.
In BlueStacks 5 for Windows, open Settings from the gear icon on the side toolbar or the hamburger menu, then use Display for orientation, resolution, DPI, cursor style, and interface scaling. Use Graphics for the rendering engine, interface renderer, ASTC textures, and GPU selection. Use Performance for FPS and VSync. After changing most display or graphics options, select Save Changes and choose Restart Now when BlueStacks prompts you.

Change display orientation and resolution
Open Settings > Display. BlueStacks 5 provides orientation choices such as Landscape, Portrait, Ultrawide, and Custom.
| Display choice | Practical starting resolution | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 1600×900 | Standard widescreen Android games and apps |
| Portrait | 900×1600 | Mobile apps designed for a vertical phone layout |
| Ultrawide | 2560×1080 | Ultrawide monitors and compatible games |
| Custom | 1920×1080 is a useful starting point | A specific monitor, aspect ratio, or game layout |
These are recommended starting points, not mandatory settings. Choose a resolution that your physical monitor supports and that suits the game’s aspect ratio. A higher resolution can make the image sharper, but it may also increase the rendering workload. A lower resolution can be useful when performance is more important than image detail.
Set a custom resolution
- Go to Settings > Display.
- Select Custom.
- Choose an existing custom option or select Add resolution.
- Enter the width and height you want to use.
- Save the setting and restart BlueStacks when prompted.
BlueStacks supports custom resolutions up to 3840×2160 according to its screen-resolution documentation. The maximum does not mean that 4K is the best choice for every game or PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your monitor cannot display the selected mode, return to Display and choose a supported resolution. When connecting BlueStacks to a 1080p display, a 1080p gaming monitor can be a sensible optional match for a 1920×1080 configuration, but buying a monitor is not required to change BlueStacks settings.
Adjust DPI or pixel density
In Settings > Display, find the DPI or pixel-density control. BlueStacks normally offers 160 DPI, 240 DPI, and 320 DPI, along with a custom value from 10 to 999.
- Lower DPI: generally makes Android interface elements appear less dense and can expose more content.
- Higher DPI: generally makes Android interface elements appear larger or denser, which can help readability or touch-oriented controls.
- Custom DPI: useful when the presets do not produce a comfortable layout.
DPI changes Android’s density and interface layout. It does not automatically add physical pixels to your monitor or increase the monitor’s native resolution. If an app reacts badly to a custom value, return to a standard preset and restart BlueStacks.

Change the cursor and BlueStacks interface scale
Display settings also include options for the mouse pointer and BlueStacks’ own interface.
- Cursor style: choose the system-default cursor or the BlueStacks cursor.
- Interface scaling: changes the size of BlueStacks icons, controls, and text.
Interface scaling affects the BlueStacks shell, not the contents rendered inside an Android app or game. If the game itself has small text or controls, look for an in-game display or accessibility setting instead.
Change graphics rendering settings
Open Settings > Graphics. Graphics settings affect how BlueStacks and Android apps render images; they are separate from the Windows monitor settings.
Choose the graphics renderer
Renderer availability depends on both your BlueStacks version and the Android instance running the app. For BlueStacks 5 version 5.22.70 or later, official documentation lists Vulkan and OpenGL for Android Pie, Android 11, and Android 13 instances. Nougat 32-bit and Nougat 64-bit instances list OpenGL and DirectX. Older BlueStacks versions may show a different set of choices.
Where supported, BlueStacks recommends the Vulkan plus OpenGL combination for broader application compatibility. That recommendation is not a guarantee that Vulkan will be fastest in every game. A particular game may require a specific renderer, show graphical corruption with one option, or prompt you to switch.
- Open Settings > Graphics.
- Review the renderer options shown for your current Android instance.
- Start with the BlueStacks-recommended combination when it is available.
- If a game displays glitches, fails to launch, or performs poorly, follow the game’s prompt or test the available alternative.
- Click Save Changes and restart BlueStacks if requested.
For the version- and instance-specific list, see BlueStacks’ graphics-renderer guide. Avoid assuming that every installation has a three-option DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan menu.

Change the interface renderer
The interface renderer controls the way the BlueStacks user interface itself is drawn. It is not the same as the renderer used for a game’s graphics.
If BlueStacks’ menus have visual glitches, flicker, or related FPS problems, try a different interface renderer, save the change, and restart. Changing this option is a troubleshooting step; it is not a universal performance upgrade. BlueStacks covers this setting in its graphics-settings documentation.
Enable or disable ASTC textures
ASTC textures can improve the appearance of supported game textures. They also represent a quality-versus-resource trade-off: enabling them may increase the workload on the PC or affect performance depending on the game and hardware.
Enable ASTC when texture quality is the priority and the game remains stable. If you experience stuttering, visual problems, or excessive resource use, test the other ASTC option and compare the same game scene. There is no reliable universal FPS result for enabling or disabling ASTC.
Check which GPU BlueStacks is using
The Graphics panel shows the GPU currently being used by BlueStacks. On a laptop or desktop with integrated and dedicated graphics, use the available option intended to ensure that the dedicated GPU is selected, then save and restart.
Treat this as a selection and confirmation step, not a guarantee of better performance. A dedicated GPU may help some systems, but results depend on the game, drivers, power settings, thermal limits, and the rest of the PC configuration.

Change FPS and VSync in Performance
FPS controls are under Settings > Performance, not Display or Graphics. Depending on your installation, you can find controls for custom FPS, high-frame-rate mode, VSync, and an FPS overlay.
Recommended Free Tools
Set a frame-rate target
Use the custom FPS control when you want to limit or tune the emulator’s frame rate. High-frame-rate mode is available only where supported by the relevant BlueStacks instance and game. The game itself must also support the target frame rate; changing the emulator limit cannot create a higher frame rate if the game or hardware is the bottleneck.
The FPS overlay is useful for diagnosis. It displays the current frame-rate information, but displaying the counter does not improve performance.
When to enable VSync
VSync synchronizes rendered output with the monitor’s refresh cycle and can reduce visible screen tearing. The trade-off is important: BlueStacks documents that enabling VSync limits the emulator to 60 FPS and disables high-frame-rate mode if it was already enabled. VSync can also introduce input lag in some online games.
- Use VSync when screen tearing is your main problem and a 60-FPS limit is acceptable.
- Leave it disabled when you need high-frame-rate mode or when input responsiveness matters more than eliminating tearing.
- Change one setting at a time and compare the same game or scene.
For the current behavior and controls, consult BlueStacks’ VSync guide.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
If changing display or graphics settings causes a launch failure, visual artifacts, stuttering, or unexpectedly low FPS, work through these steps rather than changing everything at once:
Best Value
- Pentakill, 5 DPI Levels - Geared with 5 redefinable DPI levels (default as: 500/1000/2000/3000/4000), easy to switch between different game needs. Dedicated demand of DPI options between 500-8000 is also available to be processed by software.
- Any Button is Reassignable - 11 programmable buttons are all editable with customizable tactical keybinds in whatever game or work you are engaging. 1 rapid fire + 2 side macro buttons offer you a better gaming and working experience.
- Comfort Grip with Details - The skin-friendly frosted coating is the main comfort grip of the mouse surface, which offers you the most enjoyable fingerprint-free tactility. The left side equipped with rubber texture strengthened the friction and made the mouse easier to control.
- 5 Decent Backlit Modes - Turn the backlit on and make some kills in your gaming battlefield. The hyped dynamic RGB backlit vibe will never let you down when decorating your gaming space, it would be better with other Redragon accessories with lights on.
- Fatigue Killer with Ergonomic Design - Solid frame with a streamlined and general claw-grip design offers a satisfying and comfortable gaming experience with less fatigue even though after hours of use.
- Undo an unsupported display mode. Confirm that the selected resolution and refresh-related settings match modes supported by the physical monitor.
- Check the Android instance. Renderer choices differ between Nougat, Pie, Android 11, and Android 13 instances.
- Test the game’s required renderer. If the game displays a renderer prompt, follow it. Otherwise, test the available alternative and restart after saving.
- Confirm the active GPU. This is especially important on systems with both integrated and dedicated graphics.
- Try another interface renderer. Do this when BlueStacks’ own menus or window show graphical problems, rather than treating it as a game-renderer change.
- Test ASTC textures. Disable or change ASTC if textures, stability, or performance are problematic.
- Use VSync only for tearing. Remember its 60-FPS limit and possible input-lag trade-off.
- Check graphics drivers. First obtain drivers from your GPU or computer manufacturer. If you want an optional third-party utility, Outbyte Driver Updater describes itself as a tool that scans installed hardware and recommends driver updates. It is not a BlueStacks setting, is not required, and should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for a BlueStacks problem.
Suggested starting profiles
| Goal | Starting point | What to adjust if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| General landscape gaming | Landscape at 1600×900; standard DPI; BlueStacks-recommended renderer | Lower resolution or test the alternate renderer if the game glitches |
| Portrait apps | Portrait at 900×1600 | Use Custom if the app’s layout or monitor does not suit that aspect ratio |
| Ultrawide display | Ultrawide at 2560×1080 | Use a supported standard mode if the game stretches or shows empty areas |
| Sharper image | Use a supported higher resolution and consider ASTC | Reduce resolution or disable ASTC if performance becomes unstable |
| Less tearing | Enable VSync | Disable it if 60 FPS or possible input lag is unacceptable |
These profiles are starting points, not benchmarks. The best combination depends on the game, Android instance, monitor, GPU, drivers, and available system resources.
Why a setting may not appear
- Different Android instance: Nougat instances do not necessarily expose the same renderer choices as Pie, Android 11, or Android 13.
- Different BlueStacks version: menu labels and renderer availability can change between releases.
- Unsupported hardware or mode: the available resolution, renderer, high-FPS mode, or GPU behavior may depend on the system.
- Restart still pending: some changes do not take effect until you select Save Changes and restart BlueStacks.
If an option is missing, check the official documentation for your BlueStacks release and Android instance instead of forcing a setting from an older guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the screen resolution in BlueStacks 5?
Open BlueStacks 5, click the gear icon or hamburger menu, choose Settings, and open Display. Select Landscape, Portrait, Ultrawide, or Custom, choose or add a resolution, select Save Changes, and restart when prompted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does increasing DPI increase my monitor’s resolution?
No. DPI changes Android’s interface density and layout; it does not increase the physical number of pixels on your monitor or change the monitor’s native resolution.
Is Vulkan better than OpenGL or DirectX in BlueStacks?
It depends on the Android instance and BlueStacks version. BlueStacks 5.22.70 and later generally list Vulkan and OpenGL for Android Pie, Android 11, and Android 13, while Nougat instances list OpenGL and DirectX. Follow a game-specific prompt when one appears.
Should I enable VSync in BlueStacks?
VSync can reduce screen tearing, but BlueStacks documents that it limits the emulator to 60 FPS, disables high-frame-rate mode, and may add input lag in some online games.
The Bottom Line
For most users, start in Display with a monitor-supported resolution and comfortable DPI, then use Graphics to select the renderer recommended for your BlueStacks version and Android instance. Tune ASTC, GPU selection, FPS, and VSync only in response to a specific visual or performance goal, and restart after saving changes.
