To change whether F1–F12 or the printed volume, brightness, and playback symbols work when you press a key alone, first identify the laptop’s exact model. Try its documented Fn-lock shortcut—often Fn+Esc. If that shortcut is unsupported, change the default in the manufacturer’s BIOS/UEFI menu, or use the maker’s Windows utility. HP calls the setting Action Keys Mode, Lenovo calls it Hotkey Mode, and Dell exposes Function Key Behavior or Fn Lock Options. ASUS models may provide the choice in MyASUS or ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys. There is no universal switch in Windows Settings; the keyboard firmware and OEM software determine which layer is primary.

What does changing function-key behavior actually change?

The top row on most laptop keyboards has two layers. One layer is the traditional F1 through F12 commands used by Windows, applications, and games. The other layer contains the symbols printed on the keys, such as speaker volume, screen brightness, airplane mode, keyboard backlight, or media playback.

The setting changes which layer works when you press a key by itself. If the media layer is primary, tapping the key with the speaker symbol changes volume and Fn+F1 (for example) may send the conventional F1 command. If the standard function layer is primary, tapping F1 sends F1 and you hold Fn to use the printed action. The exact assignment varies by model, and some keys have additional manufacturer-specific actions.

This is a default-layer choice, not a remapping of every key. It normally does not remove either function; it reverses which one requires the Fn modifier.

How do I find the correct setting for my laptop?

Use the exact model, not merely the brand name. Two laptops from the same manufacturer can use different shortcuts, firmware labels, or utilities.

  1. Read the model from the label on the underside or the original documentation.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s support application, if installed, and record the complete model designation.
  3. In Windows, open System Information and note the System Model entry.
  4. Use that model on the manufacturer’s support site before changing BIOS options or installing hotkey software.

Record the current behavior first. Press one key such as F1 and note whether it performs the standard function or the printed action. This gives you a simple check after each change.

Can I toggle the behavior with a keyboard shortcut?

When the keyboard supports an Fn lock, the shortcut is the quickest and least intrusive method. It changes the active layer without entering firmware or rebooting. Repeat the same shortcut to return to the previous state.

Manufacturer and model family Shortcut or qualification Result
Dell laptops Hold Fn and press Esc Repeating the combination toggles the Fn-lock state.
Lenovo Think systems Press Fn+Esc Toggles the primary layer when supported.
Lenovo ideapad systems Usually use the BIOS Hotkey Mode setting The shortcut may not be available.
ASUS supported models Press Fn+Esc ASUS warns that support is model-dependent.

Look for a small lock symbol on the Esc key or another key in the top row, but do not assume the symbol guarantees support. The model’s documentation is the authority. If the shortcut does nothing, move to the OEM utility or BIOS method rather than repeatedly pressing it.

How do I change the setting in the manufacturer’s Windows utility?

Utilities are useful when the firmware option is hidden, when the laptop has a modern interface, or when you want to change the behavior without restarting. Their menus and availability depend on the model and installed system-control software.

ASUS: MyASUS

On supported systems, open MyASUS > Device Settings > Input Device Settings > Function key. Choose Locked Fn key to make the printed actions primary, or Normal Fn key to make F1–F12 primary. ASUS requires supported hardware and the ASUS System Control Interface software; the menu can be absent when either requirement is missing.

ASUS: ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys

Some ASUS notebooks provide a separate ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys application. Select Hotkeys to make the symbols printed on the keys primary, or F1-F12 to make standard function commands primary. ASUS states that this control is limited to supported models and software versions.

Lenovo Vantage

Open Lenovo Vantage and look in the device or input settings for the keyboard hotkey preference. Lenovo specifically points to Vantage on models such as Yoga systems when the BIOS option is not exposed. If the control is absent, install the model’s current hotkey package and system-control driver from Lenovo’s support page, then check again.

Utilities usually change the same underlying preference as BIOS. Close applications that rely on a function key, make the change, and test both layers immediately. A utility setting may be unavailable until the matching OEM driver is installed.

How do I change function keys in BIOS or UEFI?

Firmware is the most dependable fallback because it controls the keyboard before Windows loads. Use the laptop’s documented startup key—commonly F2, F10, Delete, or Esc—or enter firmware from Windows.

Enter UEFI from Windows

  1. Save your work and open the Start menu or the Windows sign-in screen.
  2. Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware settings.
  4. Select Restart to enter the firmware interface.

The labels and layout differ by firmware version. Change only the function-key option, then use the on-screen save-and-exit command. Do not alter unrelated boot, security, storage, or virtualization settings while looking for the keyboard control.

HP: Action Keys Mode

  1. Power off the notebook, start it, and press F10 repeatedly to open BIOS Setup.
  2. Open System Configuration.
  3. Select Action Keys Mode.
  4. Choose Enabled or Disabled.
  5. Press F10 to save and exit.

HP defines Enabled as allowing the printed action without pressing Fn. With Disabled, the printed action requires Fn, so F1–F12 are the primary keys.

Dell: Function Key Behavior or Fn Lock Options

  1. Restart and press F2 when the Dell logo appears.
  2. Depending on the firmware layout, open Post Behavior > Fn Lock Options or Advanced > Function Key Behavior.
  3. Select the preferred default layer.
  4. Apply the change and exit, saving when prompted.

Dell firmware can present several choices for switching between F1–F12 and the special keys. The exact menu path depends on the model and BIOS revision.

Lenovo: Hotkey Mode

  1. Restart and enter BIOS Setup using the startup key shown for your model.
  2. Open the Configuration tab.
  3. Find Hotkey Mode.
  4. Set it to Enabled for the hotkey layer as primary, or Disabled for standard F1–F12 as primary.
  5. Save and exit.

Lenovo describes the enabled state as using the hotkey function with a single Fx key and the legacy Fx function with Fn+Fx. The option may be missing on systems that use a different keyboard design.

Does Windows Mobility Center change function-key behavior?

Sometimes. Search Windows for Mobility Center and open it. If your edition and OEM software expose a Function Key Row selector, use that control to choose the preferred layer.

Dell documents this menu but warns that it may not appear in a particular operating-system version. Treat Mobility Center as an optional convenience, not a universal Windows feature. If the selector is missing, use the model’s shortcut, utility, or firmware setting.

Which method should I use?

Choose the narrowest method that is available and gives you the persistence you need.

Method Speed Persistence Availability Scope and recovery
Fn-lock shortcut Immediate; no restart Usually remains until toggled again Only on keyboards that support the documented shortcut Changes only the Fn-layer default; repeat the shortcut to reverse it
OEM Windows utility Immediate or after the utility applies the setting Saved by the OEM software or firmware Requires a supported model and system-control package Clear software control; reinstall or update the utility if the option is absent
BIOS/UEFI Requires a restart Saved in firmware and independent of Windows Available when the manufacturer exposes the option Persistent and broad enough to affect behavior before Windows starts; return to the same menu to undo
Windows Mobility Center Quick when present Depends on OEM implementation May be absent on your Windows version Low-risk interface, but no action is possible if the selector is not shown

Why are my F keys still controlling volume or brightness?

Several causes produce the same symptom. Work through these checks in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The shortcut is unsupported: Confirm the exact model and use its documented BIOS or utility setting instead of assuming Fn+Esc applies.
  • The wrong firmware option was changed: On HP, verify Action Keys Mode; on Lenovo, verify Hotkey Mode; on Dell, verify Function Key Behavior or Fn Lock Options.
  • The utility is incomplete: Install the current OEM hotkey package, system-control interface, and BIOS offered for your model. ASUS specifically recommends checking BIOS, Windows packages, and drivers when shortcut functions fail.
  • The setting did not persist: Re-enter firmware, save explicitly, and perform a full restart. Lenovo notes that BIOS or hotkey-software updates may be needed when Fn+Esc does not persist or Hotkey Mode is unavailable.
  • The key itself is faulty: Test the key in the firmware screen or an independent keyboard. If the key fails everywhere, the issue is hardware rather than the Fn-layer selection.

After every change, test one standard command and one printed action. For example, check whether F5 behaves as F5 in an application and whether the same key changes brightness with Fn. This confirms both layers instead of checking only one.

Will changing the default affect games and shortcuts?

It can change what a game receives when you press a top-row key without Fn. If a game uses F1–F12 for abilities, menus, or camera controls, making the standard function layer primary can avoid accidentally changing volume or brightness during play. Conversely, if you frequently adjust audio or brightness while gaming, keeping the printed-action layer primary may be more convenient; the other layer remains reachable with Fn on a functioning keyboard.

Game-specific key bindings are separate from the laptop’s firmware preference. Rebind controls only after confirming which signal the game receives, and remember that an external keyboard may have its own Fn-lock behavior.

What if the laptop has a different implementation?

Manufacturers do not all use the same terminology. MSI, for example, documents a separate Windows/Function key position swap on supported notebooks, showing that a keyboard can have controls beyond the usual Fn-layer selection. A model may also omit an Fn lock entirely or place the option in a proprietary control panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If none of the documented paths exists, open the exact model’s support page and search its manual for “function key,” “hotkey,” “action key,” or “Fn lock.” Update the BIOS and hotkey software only from the manufacturer, keep the charger connected during firmware updates, and record the original setting before changing it. Avoid generic remapping tools until the OEM procedure has been tried, because they cannot replace a firmware-level control that the keyboard does not expose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make F1–F12 the default without entering BIOS?

Yes, if your model supports an Fn-lock shortcut or an OEM utility. Dell, Lenovo Think systems, and some ASUS models document Fn+Esc; supported ASUS notebooks may also offer the choice in MyASUS or ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys.

Why does Fn+Esc do nothing on my laptop?

The shortcut is model-dependent and is not guaranteed even within one brand. Check the exact model manual, then look for the manufacturer’s firmware setting or Windows utility; update the OEM hotkey package if the documented control is missing.

Is there a universal Windows 11 setting for the Fn key?

No. Windows Settings does not provide one universal Fn-layer switch. The available control normally comes from keyboard firmware, BIOS/UEFI, an OEM utility, or—in some installations—Windows Mobility Center.

Will a BIOS update reset my function-key preference?

It can, because firmware updates may restore defaults or change menu names. After updating, test both layers and revisit the model’s function-key setting if the behavior has reverted.
