To change Chrome’s menus and settings to English, use Chrome’s language control for your device: on Windows, open More (⋮) > Settings > Languages, add or select English, choose Display Google Chrome in this language, and restart Chrome. On Android, use More > Settings > Languages > Chrome’s language; Chrome restarts automatically after English downloads. Mac and Linux Chrome follows the computer’s default system language, while iPhone and iPad instructions focus on translating webpages rather than changing Chrome’s menus. Translating a webpage is a separate setting on every platform.

What do you want to change: Chrome’s interface or a webpage?

“Change Chrome to English” can mean two different actions. The first changes Chrome’s own menus, buttons, settings pages and prompts. The second leaves Chrome’s interface alone but translates a site you are viewing into English through Google Translate.

Goal What changes Where to change it
Chrome interface language Menus, settings, buttons and other browser controls Windows: Chrome’s Languages settings; Android: Chrome’s language selector; Mac and Linux: the operating system’s default language
Webpage translation The text of the current site, or the default target language for translated sites The Translate control on the page or Chrome’s Google Translate settings

You can use English menus while translating only selected pages, or keep the interface in another language while making English the target for translated webpages. Changing one does not automatically change the other. Before changing anything, identify whether the unfamiliar text is in Chrome itself or only in the website: the correct control is different, and changing the wrong setting will not solve the problem.

Quick answer by device

  • Windows computer: add English under Settings > Languages, select Display Google Chrome in this language, and restart Chrome manually.
  • Mac or Linux computer: Chrome uses the computer’s default system language, so set the system language to English and reopen Chrome if requested.
  • Android phone or tablet: use Settings > Languages > Chrome’s language inside Chrome; the app restarts after English downloads.
  • iPhone or iPad: the documented Chrome controls cover webpage translation, not a separate Chrome-only menu-language switch. Use the device language for English menus, or use Translate for English pages.
  • Chromebook: the cited instructions do not provide a Chromebook-specific Chrome interface path. Do not assume the Windows display selector is available; use Chrome’s webpage translation controls when that is the goal.

If your goal is only to read one page in English, skip the interface-language steps and use the translation instructions for your platform. That changes the page without changing Chrome’s menus or the computer’s language.

How do I change Chrome’s menus to English on Windows?

Windows has a Chrome-only display-language switch. Google Chrome Help describes this as the setting that lets Windows Chrome show its settings and menus in your preferred language.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More (the three-dot button) in the upper-right corner, then choose Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, select Languages.
  4. Find English under Preferred languages. If it is not listed, select Add languages, choose English, and add it.
  5. Select More beside English.
  6. Choose Display Google Chrome in this language.
  7. Restart Chrome when prompted, or close and reopen it yourself.

The restart is required for Chrome to apply the new interface language. Your normal Chrome profile, bookmarks and settings remain associated with the same profile; the selection controls the browser’s displayed text. Adding English to Preferred languages alone does not necessarily change the interface. The decisive step is opening English’s three-dot menu and selecting the display option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the restart, check a Settings page or the three-dot menu. Those browser controls should now be displayed in English. A webpage that was already open can still be written in another language, because the interface setting and webpage translation are independent.

What if English is not in Preferred languages?

Use Add languages in the Languages page rather than trying to change the Windows language first. After English is added, open its three-dot menu and select the display option. If the option does not appear beside a language, confirm that you are using Chrome on Windows; Google documents this Chrome-only display selector for Windows computers.

Use the language entry that says English, not merely a translation command on a webpage. The Preferred languages list is where Chrome stores interface and language preferences; the Google Translate section lower on the page controls translated webpages.

How do I switch back from English on Windows?

Return to Settings > Languages, open the three-dot menu beside the language you want, select Display Google Chrome in this language, and restart Chrome again. You can leave English in the preferred-language list for translation and switch the interface back whenever needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping English in the list is useful when English is your preferred translation destination. It does not force every website to appear in English; webpage translation remains controlled by the Translate options.

How do I make Chrome display in English on Mac or Linux?

Chrome on Mac and Linux does not use the Windows-style Display Google Chrome in this language control in the cited Google instructions. Google says Chrome automatically displays in the default system language for the Mac or Linux computer.

  1. Open your computer’s system language settings.
  2. Set English as the computer’s default language, using the operating system’s own language controls.
  3. Apply the system change and reopen Chrome if the operating system requests a relaunch.

The exact system-language menu names vary by operating-system version, so there is no single Chrome-only path to follow on these platforms. If you only need English text on a particular site, use Chrome’s webpage-translation controls instead; that avoids changing the computer’s overall language.

This platform difference explains why looking for the Windows option on a Mac or Linux installation can be confusing: the selector is not part of the documented Chrome settings there. The system’s default language is the setting that determines Chrome’s displayed language.

How do I change the Chrome app language to English on Android?

Android has a separate selector for Chrome’s menus and settings. The app downloads the selected language and restarts automatically when it is ready.

  1. Open the Chrome app.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More (⋮), then Settings.
  3. Tap Languages.
  4. Under Chrome’s language, tap the current language.
  5. Select English.
  6. Wait for the language to download. Chrome restarts automatically after the download completes.

This changes Chrome’s app menus and settings, not the language of every website you visit. A page that is written in another language still needs the separate Translate command. If you are trying to change only one page, use the translation notification or More > Translate instead of changing Chrome’s language.

Why does Android Chrome restart after I select English?

The restart occurs after Chrome finishes downloading the selected interface language. Do not treat the download screen as a failed change; allow the automatic restart to complete, then reopen the app if it does not return to the foreground.

The automatic restart is different from Windows, where you select the display option and then close and relaunch Chrome yourself. On Android, wait for the download and restart before judging whether the new menus were applied.

Can I change Chrome’s own menus to English on iPhone or iPad?

The cited Google instructions for Chrome on iPhone and iPad document webpage translation and translation-language settings, but they do not provide a separate Chrome-only procedure for changing the app’s own menus independently of the device language. If your goal is English menus, use the device’s language controls. If your goal is to read sites in English, use the translation workflow below.

This distinction matters because changing a webpage’s target language does not turn Chrome’s buttons or Settings page into English. The iPhone and iPad Chrome documentation instead provides controls for choosing the language a page should be translated into. Therefore, an English choice in the translation panel is not evidence that the app interface itself has changed.

How do I translate a webpage into English on a computer?

On desktop Chrome, translation is available from the page itself or from the context menu. It changes the displayed page, not Chrome’s interface.

  1. Open the webpage you want to read.
  2. Select the Translate icon at the right side of the address bar. If the icon is not shown, right-click the page and choose Translate to [Language].
  3. Select English as the target language.

To make English the standard target for future translations, open More > Settings > Languages. In the Google Translate section, select Translate into this language, then choose English.

The one-page command is useful when you want an occasional translation. The Translate into this language setting is useful when English should be the destination whenever Chrome offers to translate another page. Neither setting changes Chrome’s own menus, Settings labels or address-bar controls.

How do I control which pages Chrome offers to translate on desktop?

The same Languages area contains the controls for Google Translate. You can turn Google Translate on or off, add preferred languages, reorder those languages, and manage languages that Chrome should always translate or never offer to translate. These choices affect translation offers and targets; they do not change the language of Chrome’s menus.

Use the preferred-language controls when you want to adjust which languages are recognized or prioritized. Use the always-translate and never-translate lists when you want Chrome’s offers to be more automatic or less frequent. These are translation behaviors, not interface-language choices.

How do I translate webpages into English on Android?

Android Chrome normally presents a translation notification when it detects a page in another language. You can choose English for one page, or set English as the persistent target.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the webpage in Chrome.
  2. In the translation notification at the top, tap the language shown there.
  3. Choose English.
  4. For additional language controls, tap Settings in the translation panel, tap More languages, and select English.

If the notification is absent, tap More to the right of the address bar and choose Translate. This manual command is the fallback when Chrome does not display the notification at the top of the page.

How do I make English the default translation target on Android?

  1. Tap More (⋮) beside the address bar.
  2. Open Settings > Languages.
  3. Under Advanced, tap Translate into this language.
  4. Select English.

Android’s language settings also include Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate. You can maintain an Automatically translate these languages list and a Don’t offer to translate these languages list, which lets you automate translation for languages you regularly read or suppress prompts for languages you understand.

These lists are especially useful if you switch between languages. The automatic list controls languages Chrome should translate without repeatedly asking, while the do-not-offer list suppresses offers for languages you already understand. Both lists are separate from Chrome’s language, which controls the app’s menus and settings.

How do I translate webpages into English on iPhone or iPad?

Chrome for iPhone and iPad lets you select English as the page’s target language from the translation panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Chrome and navigate to the webpage.
  2. At the top of the translation panel, select the language to translate to.
  3. Choose English.
  4. To change the default source or target choices, tap Settings in the translation panel, then tap Edit beside the language fields.

If the translation control is not visible, tap More and choose Translate. To manage translation behavior across pages, open More > Settings > Languages, where Chrome provides a Translate pages switch and an Add language control.

The translation panel’s language fields determine the page’s source and destination choices. Editing those fields is different from changing the device language, and it does not create a separate Chrome-only menu-language setting.

What is different on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, iPad and Chromebook?

The platform determines whether you can change Chrome’s interface directly or must change the operating system. Webpage translation is a separate workflow on all of the documented platforms.

Platform Chrome interface in English Webpage translation to English Restart behavior
Windows Settings > Languages > English > Display Google Chrome in this language Translate icon or right-click Translate to [Language]; default under Settings > Languages > Google Translate Manual restart after selecting the display language
Mac Chrome follows the computer’s default system language; no Chrome-only selector is documented in the cited instructions Use the page’s Translate control and Google Translate language settings where available Reopen Chrome if the operating system requests it after a system-language change
Linux Chrome follows the computer’s default system language; no Chrome-only selector is documented in the cited instructions Use the page’s Translate control and Google Translate language settings where available Reopen Chrome if the operating system requests it after a system-language change
Android More > Settings > Languages > Chrome’s language Translation notification or More > Translate; persistent target under Languages > Advanced Automatic restart after the language download
iPhone and iPad A separate Chrome-only menu-language procedure is not provided in the cited Google instructions Translation panel, More > Translate, and Settings > Languages Not specified for the documented webpage-translation controls
Chromebook A Chromebook-specific Chrome interface procedure is not provided in the cited instructions; do not assume the Windows display selector exists Use the translation controls available in Chrome when a page is eligible Not specified in the cited instructions

The most important comparison is whether the interface selector is built into Chrome. Windows and Android provide one, but they apply it differently: Windows requires a manual restart, while Android restarts after the language download. Mac and Linux inherit the system language, and the documented iPhone and iPad guidance centers on webpage translation. Chromebook-specific interface steps are not supplied, so use only controls that are actually present on that device.

Why is the Translate button missing or unavailable?

First refresh the webpage and check again for the Translate icon, the page context-menu command, or the More > Translate command on mobile. If the control still cannot be selected after refreshing, Google says the language may not be supported for translation in that context.

  • Desktop: try the address-bar Translate icon, then right-click the page and choose Translate to [Language].
  • Android: open More beside the address bar and tap Translate if the notification did not appear.
  • iPhone or iPad: open More > Translate, then choose English in the translation panel.
  • Still unavailable: refresh once more and consider that the source language may not be available to Google Translate in that context.

A missing notification does not necessarily mean translation is disabled: on Android and iPhone or iPad, the manual More > Translate command can expose the translation panel. On a computer, the right-click command is an alternative to the address-bar icon. If neither route is selectable after refreshing, the language-availability limitation is the likely explanation documented by Google.

Which setting should I use?

  • Choose the Windows display-language option or Android’s Chrome’s language selector when Chrome’s menus and settings are the problem.
  • Change the computer’s default system language on Mac or Linux when the entire Chrome interface needs to follow English.
  • Use the page Translate control when only a foreign-language website needs to be read in English.
  • Set Translate into this language to English when you want English to be the default destination for future translations.
  • Use always-translate and never-translate lists when Chrome’s translation offers are too frequent or not frequent enough for the languages you encounter.

When in doubt, look at what you want to change: browser controls require an interface-language setting, while words inside a site require Google Translate. Keeping those choices separate lets you use English menus, translate selected pages, or do both without repeatedly changing the wrong preference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep Chrome’s menus in one language and translate only selected sites into English?

Yes. The interface-language controls and Google Translate controls are separate. Set the browser or app language according to your platform, then invoke Translate only on pages that need it instead of changing the interface again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “Translate into this language” change on a computer?

It chooses the destination language Chrome uses when it translates a webpage through Google Translate. It does not rename Chrome’s Settings page, menus, address-bar buttons or other browser controls.

How can I stop automatic translation offers for a language I understand?

On Android, open Chrome’s Languages settings and add that language to Don’t offer to translate these languages. On desktop, manage the always-translate and never-translate language lists in the Google Translate section of Settings > Languages.

What should I do if English appears in the language list but Chrome still shows the old language?

On Windows, selecting English is not enough until you choose Display Google Chrome in this language and restart the browser. On Android, wait for the language download and the automatic restart; the language selector affects Chrome’s app interface, not the text of an already-open webpage.

Does changing Chrome’s language translate websites automatically?

No. The Windows display option and Android’s Chrome’s language selector change menus and settings. Use the page’s Translate control or the Google Translate language settings to translate website text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find “Display Google Chrome in this language” on a Mac or Linux computer?

Google documents that display-language selector for Windows. On Mac and Linux, Chrome follows the computer’s default system language, so use the operating system’s language controls instead.

How do I translate a page when Android’s notification is missing?

Tap More beside the address bar and choose Translate. Then select English in the translation panel. If the command remains unavailable after refreshing, the language may not be supported for translation in that context.

Can I choose English as the translation language on iPhone or iPad?

Yes. Open the translation panel, select the language to translate to, and choose English. If the panel is not visible, use More > Translate. This changes webpage translation, not the Chrome app’s own menu language.

What happens after I select English on Android?

Chrome downloads the selected interface language and restarts automatically when the download is ready. Wait for that restart before checking the new menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a Chromebook-specific Chrome language procedure here?

The documented instructions do not provide a Chromebook-specific Chrome interface path. Do not assume the Windows display selector exists; use Chrome’s available webpage translation controls when you need an English page.

The Bottom Line

Use Display Google Chrome in this language on Windows or Chrome’s language on Android to change Chrome’s interface. Mac and Linux follow the system language, while iPhone and iPad guidance focuses on webpage translation. For English website text on any platform, use Chrome’s Translate controls and set Translate into this language to English.
