In Photoshop, open Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid, & Slices on Windows or Photoshop > Settings > Guides, Grid, & Slices on macOS. Choose a preset or custom guide color, select a line style, and click OK. In Illustrator, open Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid on Windows or Illustrator > Preferences > Guides & Grid on macOS, then change the guide color and style.

The two applications use similar controls but differ in menu names and in how much control you have over individual guides. Photoshop can also edit the color of selected, already-placed guides; Illustrator’s documented controls are primarily global guide and document-grid preferences. These guides are workspace aids, so their appearance does not print or export with your artwork.

What can you change about guides in Photoshop and Illustrator?

Both applications let you change how guides appear while you work. The main controls are guide color and line style. Depending on the application, color can come from a preset list or from a custom color picker; line style can be a continuous line or a dotted treatment.

Photoshop places guide controls in a combined Guides, Grid, & Slices panel. That panel also contains grid color, grid style, spacing, and subdivisions. Illustrator uses a Guides & Grid preference category for guide and document-grid appearance. Changing a grid setting does not automatically change a guide setting, so identify the target control before applying a new value.

There are two different Photoshop tasks:

  • General appearance: change the preference used for guides and grids in the application.
  • Selected existing guides: change the orientation or color of one guide or a selected group without treating the change as a general preference.

Adobe’s current Photoshop help documents the general preference route and was updated February 23, 2026: Set guide and grid preferences in Photoshop.

Decide which setting you actually need

Before opening a dialog, identify whether you are looking at a guide or a grid. A guide is an individual horizontal or vertical alignment aid placed in the document. A grid is the repeating framework whose interval is defined by gridline spacing and subdivisions. They can overlap on screen, but they are not interchangeable. If only one guide is distracting, changing the global preference is broader than necessary. If the whole workspace is difficult to read, a general preference is the efficient route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also identify your operating system before following a menu path. Windows starts these preference routes from Edit; macOS starts from the application menu. Photoshop’s current macOS wording is Settings, a change that explains why older instructions may appear not to match.

How do you change the default guide color and style in Photoshop?

Use the combined guide-and-grid preferences when you want Photoshop’s normal guide appearance changed for your workspace. The Windows and macOS menu labels are different in current desktop builds.

Windows

  1. Open Photoshop and choose Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid, & Slices.
  2. In the guide color controls, choose one of the preset colors. To use a specific color, choose Custom and select a color in the picker.
  3. Choose the guide line style. This setting controls the visual treatment of guides, not the grid.
  4. Click OK to apply the change.

macOS

  1. Open Photoshop and choose Photoshop > Settings > Guides, Grid, & Slices. Current Photoshop desktop documentation uses Settings in this macOS path, whereas Windows still uses Preferences.
  2. Choose a preset guide color, or select Custom and pick a color.
  3. Select the guide line style.
  4. Click OK.

The same dialog includes gridline spacing and subdivisions. Those measurements determine the grid’s interval structure; they do not alter the guide color or line style. If the goal is only to make guides easier to see, leave the grid measurement fields alone.

Changing grid appearance at the same time

If you also need to change the grid, use its own color and style controls in the same panel. Set grid spacing and subdivisions separately when you need a different measurement rhythm. Keeping guide and grid values distinct is useful when both are visible and you need to tell alignment guides from the document grid at a glance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable Photoshop workflow

  1. Open the panel and read the headings before changing anything.
  2. Set the guide color first, using a preset for a quick change or Custom for a specific hue.
  3. Set the guide line style independently of the grid style.
  4. Change grid values only if you intend to alter the repeating measurement framework.
  5. Select OK, then inspect the document with the same guides and grid displayed. If only the grid changed, return to the guide controls rather than changing spacing again.

This sequence prevents the common mistake of adjusting gridline spacing when the real problem is guide contrast.

How do you recolor an existing Photoshop guide without changing every guide?

Use the selected-guide editing command when the change should apply to one guide or a chosen group rather than to the general appearance preference.

  1. Select the Move tool.
  2. Click the guide you want to edit. To select multiple guides, hold Alt + Shift on Windows or Option + Shift on macOS while selecting the guides.
  3. Right-click a selected guide and choose Edit Selected Guides.
  4. In the editing controls, change the guide’s orientation or color.
  5. Confirm the change.

This route is separate from Guides, Grid, & Slices preferences. Use preferences for a broad, default appearance; use Edit Selected Guides for a targeted correction. Adobe’s current instructions are in Edit guides in Photoshop, updated December 2, 2025.

When selected-guide editing is the better choice

  • You are marking several unrelated regions and want one guide to stand out.
  • A document already contains guides whose colors need to be changed without redesigning your normal workspace settings.
  • You need to correct a guide’s orientation while you are editing its color.

If the right-click command is unavailable, first verify that the Move tool is active and that a guide is actually selected. A general preference change is not a substitute for selecting the existing guide you intend to edit. For a group, make sure each intended guide is selected before opening the command; otherwise the edit applies only to the guide Photoshop recognizes as selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Global versus selected-guide scope

These two routes solve different problems. The preference panel is the place to establish the guide appearance you normally want when working in Photoshop. The context-menu command is the place to adjust a particular guide already in the document, including its orientation. Keeping that distinction in mind avoids repeatedly changing a workspace preference when the document contains one exceptional guide.

How do you change guide color and style in Illustrator?

Illustrator keeps guide and document-grid controls in the Guides & Grid category of Preferences. You can open Preferences from the menu or with a keyboard shortcut, then apply the changes with OK.

Windows

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences.
  2. Select Guides & Grid in the Preferences categories.
  3. Change the guide color by choosing a preset or opening the color picker for a custom color.
  4. Choose the guide style. Adobe’s Illustrator reference describes dotted and line treatments.
  5. Click OK.

macOS

  1. Choose Illustrator > Preferences.
  2. Select Guides & Grid.
  3. Choose a preset guide color or select a custom color in the picker.
  4. Choose the guide style, such as dots or lines.
  5. Click OK.

Keyboard shortcut

Adobe’s current Illustrator preference overview lists Ctrl + K on Windows and Cmd + K on macOS as shortcuts for opening Preferences. After the dialog opens, choose Guides & Grid; the shortcut does not jump directly to that category.

The current category and menu routes are listed in Adobe’s Set app preferences in Illustrator. Adobe’s more detailed Illustrator reference was last updated in 2019; it corroborates the dots-or-lines and preset-or-custom color controls, but current builds may use slightly different labels.

Illustrator workflow checks

After opening Guides & Grid, confirm that you are changing the guide row or control rather than the document-grid row. Select the color first, then the style, and use OK to close the dialog. If you opened Preferences with the shortcut, remember that you still have to choose the category manually. The shortcut saves the menu navigation; it does not select a preference pane for you.

Illustrator’s documented guide choices include dots and lines. If your installed version uses a slightly different label, compare the visual choices in the live dialog instead of assuming the older wording is required. The function is still the guide color and guide-style control within Guides & Grid.

What are the Photoshop and Illustrator menu paths on each platform?

Use this table as a quick route map. The application menu on macOS replaces the Windows Edit menu for the preference command.

Application Platform Menu path Guide controls Additional controls in the same area
Photoshop desktop Windows Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid, & Slices Preset or custom color; guide line style Grid color, grid style, gridline spacing, subdivisions
Photoshop desktop macOS Photoshop > Settings > Guides, Grid, & Slices Preset or custom color; guide line style Grid color, grid style, gridline spacing, subdivisions
Illustrator Windows Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid Preset or custom color; dots or lines Document-grid appearance
Illustrator macOS Illustrator > Preferences > Guides & Grid Preset or custom color; dots or lines Document-grid appearance

Photoshop’s macOS label is the version-sensitive detail most likely to cause confusion: current help calls the menu Settings. If an older tutorial says Photoshop > Preferences, look for the same Guides, Grid, & Slices category under the label used by your installed build.

Comparison by task

Task Photoshop Illustrator
Set normal guide appearance Guides, Grid, & Slices preferences Guides & Grid preferences
Choose color Preset or Custom Preset or color picker
Choose style Guide line-style control Dots or lines in the documented reference
Edit one existing guide Move tool, select guide, Edit Selected Guides Use the global preference category documented for guides and grid
Grid controls Color, style, spacing, subdivisions Document-grid appearance in Guides & Grid

This comparison is about scope as much as interface. Photoshop explicitly documents a selected-guide editing path; the Illustrator instructions here describe the preference category for guide and document-grid appearance.

What is the difference between guide styling and grid styling?

A guide is an individual alignment aid that you place in the document. A grid is a repeating measurement framework controlled by spacing and subdivisions. They can be displayed together, but their color and style controls are separate.

In Photoshop

The combined panel makes it easy to edit the wrong item. Guide color and guide style belong to the guide controls; grid color, grid style, spacing, and subdivisions belong to the grid controls. For example, changing gridline spacing will not make a guide more visible, and changing a guide’s color will not alter the grid pattern.

In Illustrator

The Guides & Grid category groups both kinds of settings. Select the guide controls when you want to change dots or lines and guide color. Use the document-grid controls when you want to change the repeating grid’s appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical visual setup

Choose contrasting treatments when guides and grids are visible simultaneously. A solid guide and a dotted grid, or two clearly different colors, can reduce selection mistakes during layout. The exact color choice is a workflow preference; the applications provide the controls but do not impose a universal color standard.

Because guides do not print, you can optimize this contrast for your monitor and workspace. A color that is easy to distinguish from the canvas and from the grid is more useful than a nominally familiar color. If the grid is the stronger visual element, adjust its own style or color rather than weakening the guide control you need for alignment.

Why might the menu or control look different from a tutorial?

Adobe changes labels and preference layouts between application versions and operating systems. The underlying category remains the useful anchor: Guides, Grid, & Slices in Photoshop and Guides & Grid in Illustrator.

  • Photoshop on macOS: current desktop help uses Settings rather than Preferences in the application menu.
  • Photoshop on Windows: the route remains under Edit > Preferences.
  • Illustrator on both platforms: Preferences is opened from the application’s platform-specific menu, then the Guides & Grid category is selected.
  • Older Illustrator documentation: the detailed reference is from 2019, so a current dialog may place or name a control differently while retaining the same color and style functions.

When instructions disagree with what you see, start from the current application menu and search the category list for the named guide or grid section rather than following an old click count. The category name is a better navigation anchor than the exact position of a control in a preference window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version-aware reading of instructions

For Photoshop, the current desktop help was updated February 23, 2026 for the general preference route and December 2, 2025 for selected-guide editing. For Illustrator, Adobe’s current preference overview confirms the category and shortcut, while the detailed dots-and-lines reference dates to November 4, 2019. These dates explain why a current Illustrator dialog may not reproduce every label in an older illustration, even though the documented controls remain recognizable.

How do you troubleshoot guide color and style changes?

The guides still look the same

  • Confirm that you changed the guide controls, not the neighboring grid controls.
  • In Photoshop, confirm that you clicked OK after selecting the color and style.
  • If the change is meant for one existing Photoshop guide, select that guide and use Edit Selected Guides instead of relying only on global preferences.
  • Check that the style choice was made in the guide section, not the document-grid section.
  • Reopen the same category and verify the value you intended to set; this distinguishes an unapplied change from a control that affects a different object.

You cannot find the Photoshop command on macOS

Open the application menu named Photoshop, then look for Settings and the Guides, Grid, & Slices category. Current desktop documentation no longer presents the macOS route with the Windows-style Edit > Preferences wording.

You cannot find the Illustrator category

Open Preferences first with Edit > Preferences on Windows or Illustrator > Preferences on macOS. In the category list, choose Guides & Grid; pressing Ctrl + K or Cmd + K only opens the Preferences dialog.

A tutorial shows a different style name

Illustrator documentation describes dots and lines, while interface wording can vary by version. Match the visual choice in the live dialog rather than assuming an older tutorial’s exact label must be present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You changed the grid by mistake

Return to the same preference panel and identify the separate guide controls. In Photoshop, gridline spacing and subdivisions are measurement fields, not guide-style settings. In Illustrator, the Guides & Grid category contains both areas, so read the control label before selecting a color or style.

The right-click editing command is missing in Photoshop

Select the Move tool and click an actual guide first. The Edit Selected Guides command is for a selected existing guide or group; opening general preferences will not activate that targeted command. For multiple guides, use the platform-specific modifier while selecting them, then right-click the selection.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Do guide color and style changes affect printed or exported artwork?

No. Adobe describes guides in both applications as nonprinting workspace aids. Their colors, dots, and lines help you align objects while editing; they are not added to the artwork when you print or produce final output. Photoshop’s overview of grids and guides explains this behavior in Using grids and guides in Photoshop.

That distinction lets you choose high-contrast guide settings for comfortable editing without worrying that those colors will appear in a finished image, page, or illustration. The artwork itself still needs its own fills, strokes, layers, and export settings. Changing a guide is therefore a workspace decision, not a color-management or print-production decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which method should you use?

Choose the shortest path that matches the scope of the change:

  • Change the normal appearance of guides: use Photoshop’s Guides, Grid, & Slices preferences or Illustrator’s Guides & Grid preferences.
  • Change one or several existing Photoshop guides: select them with the Move tool, then use Edit Selected Guides.
  • Change only the repeating measurement framework: use the grid controls, including grid style, color, spacing, or subdivisions.
  • Follow an older tutorial on macOS Photoshop: look under Photoshop > Settings in current builds, even if the tutorial says Preferences.
  • Use Illustrator’s keyboard route: press Ctrl + K or Cmd + K, then select Guides & Grid.

Once the correct scope is identified, the actual change is a color selection, a style selection, and confirmation with OK. The important distinction is whether you are editing a default preference, a selected Photoshop guide, or the document grid.

Final checklist

  1. Identify Photoshop or Illustrator and your operating system.
  2. Choose the guide category, not just the nearby grid controls.
  3. Use a preset or custom color as appropriate.
  4. Select the intended guide style.
  5. Apply with OK.
  6. For one existing Photoshop guide, use the Move tool and Edit Selected Guides instead of a global preference.
  7. Remember that guides remain nonprinting aids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Photoshop menu say “Settings” instead of “Preferences” on a Mac?

Adobe’s current Photoshop desktop documentation uses Photoshop > Settings for the macOS route to Guides, Grid, & Slices. Windows continues to use Edit > Preferences, so the different wording reflects the platform and current application labeling rather than a missing feature.

Can Illustrator open Preferences without using the menus?

Yes. Adobe lists Ctrl + K for Windows and Cmd + K for macOS. The shortcut opens the general Preferences dialog; you still need to select Guides & Grid from its category list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Photoshop guides and the document grid controlled by the same setting?

They share a preferences panel, but their controls are separate. Guide color and style do not set grid spacing or subdivisions, and changing grid appearance does not recolor a guide.

Why might an Illustrator tutorial use different names for the style options?

Adobe’s detailed Illustrator reference that documents dots and lines was updated in 2019. Newer builds can revise labels or dialog organization, so use the live Guides & Grid dialog as the authority while looking for the same color and style choices.

Can I change only one Photoshop guide’s color?

Yes. Select the Move tool, select the guide, right-click it, choose Edit Selected Guides, and change its color. Hold Alt + Shift on Windows or Option + Shift on macOS while selecting if you need to include multiple guides.

What should I change if the grid, not the guide, is hard to read?

Use the grid controls in the same preference area. In Photoshop these include grid color, grid style, gridline spacing, and subdivisions; in Illustrator, use the document-grid controls within Guides & Grid. Guide settings and grid settings are separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do guide colors appear in a PDF, print, or exported image?

No. Adobe describes guides as nonprinting workspace aids. Their colors and styles help during editing but are not added to the finished artwork.

Why did changing gridline spacing not make my guide more visible?

Gridline spacing controls the repeating grid’s interval structure. It does not alter guide color or line style. Return to the guide controls and choose a preset or custom color and the desired guide style.

Why is Edit Selected Guides unavailable in Photoshop?

The command requires a selected guide and the Move tool. Select the guide first, or select a group with the appropriate platform modifier, then right-click the selection.

The Bottom Line

Use Guides, Grid, & Slices in Photoshop or Guides & Grid in Illustrator to set guide color and style. Windows starts from Edit; macOS starts from the application menu, with current Photoshop builds using Settings. For a single existing Photoshop guide, use Edit Selected Guides. Guides are nonprinting, so choose the colors and styles that make alignment easiest on your screen.
