Change DayZ’s login and logout countdowns in the active mission’s db/globals.xml, not normally in serverDZ.cfg. Stop the server gracefully, open mpmissions/<active-mission>/db/globals.xml, and edit the integer values for TimeLogin and TimeLogout. Both are commonly set to 15 seconds by default. Save the file, validate the XML if your host provides a validator, and restart the server; the new timers are read on the next start.

The two variables are independent, so a server can use one countdown for spawning and another for the period a character remains in the world after disconnecting. The right values depend on whether your server is PvP or PvE, how strongly you want to discourage combat logging, and how much waiting your community will accept.

How do I change the DayZ login and logout timers?

Use the mission database file and change the two timer variables to whole seconds. A standard Chernarus installation commonly contains this file:

mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/db/globals.xml

Inside it, look for entries like these:

<var name="TimeLogin" type="0" value="15"/>
<var name="TimeLogout" type="0" value="15"/>

Replace only the numeric value attributes with the delays you want. For example, value="10" means a 10-second countdown. Keep type="0" and the XML element structure used by the file shipped with your server. After saving, start the server again; the changed values are applied during that startup.

What do TimeLogin and TimeLogout control?

TimeLogin and TimeLogout govern different moments in a player’s session. They are not two names for the same delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TimeLogin: the spawn countdown

TimeLogin is the countdown shown while a player logs in before the character spawns into the world. Its documented default is 15 seconds. Increasing it gives the server more time to process a connection before the character appears, but it also makes every normal login slower.

TimeLogout: the post-disconnect exposure

TimeLogout controls how long the character remains in the game world after the player disconnects. The character can be vulnerable during this period. The setting is intended to make combat logging less attractive: leaving during a fight does not remove the character immediately.

A longer value increases that deterrent and the time an unattended character is exposed. A shorter value makes routine departures more convenient but gives a player less risk after an unsafe or tactical disconnect.

The documented default

Provider documentation from GTXGaming reports 15 seconds as the default for both variables. Treat that as the default in the standard file, not as a promise that every custom mission, mod pack, or host image uses the same number. Check the actual globals.xml on your server before changing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is globals.xml on a DayZ server?

The path is relative to the server’s main directory and uses the mission that is currently active. The general pattern is:

mpmissions/<active-mission>/db/globals.xml

For the official maps commonly cited by hosting documentation, the mission directory examples are:

Map Example mission directory Timer file
Chernarus dayzOffline.chernarusplus mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/db/globals.xml
Livonia dayzOffline.enoch mpmissions/dayzOffline.enoch/db/globals.xml
Any other active mission The directory selected by that mission mpmissions/<active-mission>/db/globals.xml

Use your hosting panel’s file manager or connect to the server filesystem supplied by the host. If several mission folders are present, identify the one selected by the server’s startup configuration or panel. Editing an unused mission leaves the running server unchanged.

Why the active mission matters

DayZ stores many world and gameplay settings inside the mission folder. A server can retain Chernarus and Livonia files at the same time, while only one is loaded for the current instance. The timer must be changed in the loaded mission’s db/globals.xml, otherwise a restart appears to do nothing.

What is the exact procedure?

Follow this sequence so the server does not overwrite a live file and so a malformed XML document is caught before players return.

  1. Announce a maintenance window. Tell players that the server will stop and that login or logout behavior will change after it returns. A brief notice avoids treating a planned restart as an unexpected outage.
  2. Stop the server gracefully. Use the hosting panel’s normal stop command or the supported graceful-shutdown method. Bohemia Interactive recommends a graceful shutdown because an abrupt termination can negatively affect player characters and storage saves.
  3. Back up the existing file. Download or copy the current globals.xml before editing. Keep the original filename and make a separate backup so you can restore the known-good version if the server rejects the file.
  4. Open the active mission file. Navigate to mpmissions/<active-mission>/db/globals.xml, using the directory for the map that the server actually starts.
  5. Find the timer entries. Search for TimeLogin and TimeLogout. They normally appear as self-closing <var> elements with type="0".
  6. Change integer seconds only. Edit the digits inside each value attribute. For example, this creates a 10-second login countdown and a 30-second logout countdown:
<var name="TimeLogin" type="0" value="10"/>
<var name="TimeLogout" type="0" value="30"/>
  1. Preserve the XML syntax. Do not remove quotation marks, angle brackets, the slash on a self-closing element, or the type attribute unless the file supplied by your server uses a different documented structure.
  2. Save the file in place. Confirm that the panel did not create a second copy such as globals.xml.txt. A file manager that hides extensions can make this mistake easy to miss.
  3. Validate the XML. If the hosting panel has an XML validator, run it before starting the server. GTXGaming warns that an XML typo can prevent the server from reading the file. If validation reports a line or column, compare that line with your backup and restore any damaged tags.
  4. Start the server. Use the normal startup action and wait until the server reports that it is ready. The new timer values are read on the next start rather than being applied to an already running process.
  5. Perform a controlled check. Log in once to observe the spawn countdown, then disconnect in a safe location and observe the logout behavior. Do not use an active firefight as a first test, because a mistake in the file or an unexpected restart can put a character at risk.

Can I set different login and logout times?

Yes. The variables are independent. You can use a short login wait for convenience while keeping a longer logout exposure to support an anti-combat-logging rule, or choose any other combination your community accepts.

Configuration Login wait Logout exposure Likely effect
Equal defaults 15 seconds 15 seconds Matches the commonly shipped default for both actions.
Fast login, longer logout 10 seconds 30 seconds Reduces routine login waiting while leaving a disconnected character exposed longer.
Longer login, short logout 30 seconds 10 seconds Adds connection delay but reduces the time a character remains after leaving.
Custom equal values Any chosen integer The same integer Creates a uniform countdown if the server wants one simple rule.

The examples illustrate the independent fields; they are not universal recommendations. The available documentation establishes integer-second values and separate variables, but it does not establish a provider-independent minimum or maximum. Do not assume that a value accepted by one host or custom mission is valid everywhere.

How should I choose timer values for a PvP or PvE server?

Choose each timer by considering the behavior you want, rather than copying a number from another server. A PvP community usually gives more weight to logout exposure, while a PvE community may prioritize quick, predictable departures.

Login wait: convenience versus a deliberate pause

A short TimeLogin keeps routine reconnects moving and reduces frustration after a crash or scheduled restart. A longer value makes every player wait before spawning and can feel disproportionate when the server is otherwise healthy. If your rules require a visible warning or a brief connection pause, explain that purpose in the server description so new players are not surprised.

Logout exposure: deterrence versus character safety

Increasing TimeLogout leaves the character present for longer after a disconnect, which can discourage a player from escaping combat by closing the game. The trade-off is real: an accidental loss of connection, power failure, or crash can leave the character vulnerable for the same duration. Shortening it reduces that exposure but weakens the deterrent.

A decision framework

  • Start with your rules. If combat logging is explicitly prohibited, publish the logout countdown alongside the rule and explain how staff handle disconnects.
  • Consider connection reliability. Communities with frequent network interruptions may prefer a less punitive exposure period than a highly stable private server.
  • Separate PvP zones from general play. The timer is global for the mission file; it cannot automatically become longer only when a player is inside a particular area without additional systems.
  • Change one variable at a time when diagnosing complaints. Keeping the other value constant makes it clear whether players are reacting to login delay or post-disconnect exposure.
  • Record the chosen values. Put them in the server rules and maintenance notes so an administrator can restore the intended configuration after a mission replacement.

Why should I edit globals.xml instead of serverDZ.cfg?

The timer-specific instructions place TimeLogin and TimeLogout in the active mission’s db/globals.xml. Bohemia Interactive’s official server reference describes the general startup configuration selected with the -config parameter, which is a different role from the mission database file.

That distinction matters because administrators often search serverDZ.cfg first. If the timer variables are not present there, adding them arbitrarily may have no effect. Edit the entries in the mission file that the running server loads, and use the startup configuration only to identify the active mission and other server-level settings.

What happens if the timer change does not appear?

Most apparent failures come from editing the wrong mission, starting an instance that uses another profile, or saving invalid XML. Check these branches in order.

The old countdown is still shown

  • Confirm that the server was fully stopped before the edit and actually restarted afterward.
  • Verify that the path includes the active mission directory, not a similarly named map or a backup folder.
  • Reopen the file after saving and confirm that the new digits are still present.
  • Check whether a hosting panel restores a default mission file during updates or mod synchronization.
  • Make sure players connected to the intended server instance rather than a second shard or test instance.

The server fails to start or ignores the file

  • Run the panel’s XML validator, if available.
  • Compare the edited lines with the backup for missing quotes, a deleted closing angle bracket, or a malformed self-closing tag.
  • Confirm that the values are plain integers, not text such as 15s, decimals, or negative signs.
  • Restore the backup to bring the server online, then reapply only the two numeric changes.
  • Read the startup log supplied by the host for a file path or line number; the exact message is more useful than repeatedly changing values.

The file does not contain the expected lines

Do not paste a random block into an unrelated configuration file. First confirm that you opened the active mission’s db/globals.xml and that the server’s shipped mission files have not been replaced by a custom mission. If the file uses a different structure, preserve that structure and consult the host’s documentation before adding new variables.

How do updates, wipes, and backups affect these settings?

Mission files can be replaced during a map change, a server reinstall, a profile migration, or a wipe procedure. Keep a copy of the intended timer lines and record which mission directory they belong to. After any operation that replaces the mission, check the file before allowing players back in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A backup is also a recovery tool, not merely an archive. If a syntax error prevents startup, restoring the last known-good file is faster than trying to reconstruct every XML element from memory. Keep the backup outside the live mission directory so an automated reset does not overwrite both copies.

How should I communicate a timer change to players?

Publish the login and logout values in the server rules, Discord announcement, or in-game message used by your community. Explain that the logout countdown leaves a character in the world after disconnecting and that the same rule applies to an accidental connection loss unless an administrator’s policy says otherwise.

Give players the effective restart time and distinguish the two timers clearly. “Login: 10 seconds; logout: 30 seconds” is less ambiguous than saying “the timer is 30 seconds.” If you later change one field, announce which field changed so players can adjust their expectations without guessing.

Which values are documented, and which are not?

The documented facts are limited to the variable names, their integer-second format, the commonly reported 15-second defaults, and the ability to set them independently. The available documentation does not define a universal minimum or maximum that applies to every DayZ server provider, map, or custom mission.

  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

For that reason, avoid presenting a single “best” value or claiming that a particular extreme is supported everywhere. Use the integer format shown in the server’s own file, validate the XML, restart, and confirm behavior on the specific instance you administer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to restart the DayZ server after editing globals.xml?

Yes. The timer values are read when the server starts, so changing the file while the process is running does not update an existing session. Schedule the restart after a graceful shutdown and verify the file is still saved before bringing the server online.

Can I change the timers from a hosting control panel without FTP access?

Usually, if the panel includes a file manager, you can navigate to the active mission directory and edit the file there. The labels and permissions differ by provider, so look for the mission folder rather than a generic server-settings form; a form that edits only serverDZ.cfg may not expose these variables.

Will changing TimeLogout prevent every combat-logging exploit?

No. It only controls how long the character remains in the world after a disconnect. Mods, crashes, administrator interventions, and other server rules can affect combat-logging cases, so publish the countdown as one part of the server policy rather than as a complete enforcement system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a server update restores 15 seconds?

Recheck the active mission’s globals.xml after the update or wipe, because replacement files can remove custom edits. Keep a separate backup of your preferred lines, then reapply them, validate the XML, restart, and announce the effective values again.

Are TimeLogin and TimeLogout measured in minutes or seconds?

They are represented as integer seconds in the XML values. Enter a whole number such as 10, 15, or 30, without a unit suffix; the game interprets the number as the countdown duration.
