To prioritize smoother motion on PS5, set the console’s game preset to Performance Mode, then choose a motion-focused option in the individual game’s graphics menu if one is available. Performance Mode is a preference, not a universal frame-rate switch: games offer different modes and implement them differently. Display features such as 120 Hz output and VRR also require support from both the game and the connected display.
Choose Performance Mode as your starting preference
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode and choose Performance Mode to favor smoother motion in games that offer the choice. Sony describes Resolution Mode as favoring higher graphic quality. These presets do not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate across games. PlayStation Support explains the game preset options.
- Start the open-world game and open its own graphics, display, or video settings. Compare the modes it actually lists; choose its performance- or frame-rate-oriented option when motion is your priority. If you prefer visual detail, try the quality-oriented option instead.
The in-game menu is decisive: the console preset is a default preference, and only games that offer the corresponding modes can use it. Do not assume a specific frame rate or resolution without information for that game.
Check PS5 video output and display support
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review the connected HDMI device and configure the console’s output. With Resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. This setting concerns the output signal; it does not select a game’s performance mode. See Sony’s PS5 resolution and video-output guide.
120 Hz Output
Turn on 120 Hz Output when the display and the game support 120 Hz. This enables the console’s compatible 120 Hz video output; it cannot add a 120 Hz mode to a game that does not support one. If a game causes display or output problems, Sony recommends turning this option off.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR lets a compatible display adjust its refresh rate in real time. It may improve presentation by reducing or eliminating some tearing or frame-pacing issues, but the result depends on the TV, game, and selected visual mode. In the VRR settings, Apply to Unsupported Games is optional; if enabling it causes unexpected effects, turn it off. Sony’s April 25, 2022 VRR announcement describes the feature and notes that results vary. Check the current console support information and the game’s own guidance for compatibility.
ALLM and 1440p output
ALLM can switch a compatible TV to a low-latency mode while you play; some TVs label this mode Game Mode. It is a latency feature, not a graphics preset. If your display supports 1440p, use Test 1440p Output to check compatibility with SDR or HDR at 60 or 120 Hz and with VRR. Sony notes that a 4K game sent to a 1440p display may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling. Neither setting guarantees smoother gameplay. See the PS5 features overview.

Match the setting to your priority
| Priority | What to try | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Smoother motion | Set the PS5 preset to Performance Mode, then select the game’s performance or frame-rate option if offered. | Modes and results vary by game; Sony does not state one universal frame rate or resolution for these presets. Sony’s preset guidance. |
| Higher graphic quality | Choose Resolution Mode in the PS5 preset or the game’s quality-oriented option. | The available modes and their specific output are determined by the game. Sony’s preset guidance. |
| Adaptive refresh presentation | Enable VRR when both the game and display support it. | Results vary by TV, game, and selected visual mode. Sony’s current output guide; Sony’s 2022 VRR announcement. |
| 120 Hz signal | Enable 120 Hz Output when the game and display support it. | The setting enables an output capability; it does not create game support. Sony’s output guide. |
| Display resolution | Leave Resolution on Automatic unless you have a reason to test another output; use Test 1440p Output with a compatible display if relevant. | Automatic selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV. Sony’s output guide. |
