Treat store-page labels and refund eligibility as useful information—not guarantees.
Does the game’s premise and gameplay fit what you want?
Start with the store description, screenshots, and trailer. Look for the game’s perspective, setting, mood, and core activity: surviving, exploring, solving puzzles, fighting, or something else. A horror label alone doesn’t tell you how the game plays, and promotional media may not show every part of the experience. Compare the written description with the images and video to get a clearer sense of the current game.

Steam tags can help you discover and classify games by genre, perspective, mood, themes, and gameplay features. But tags are applied by developers, players with non-limited accounts, and moderators, and the mix can change. Use them as clues, then check whether the description and media support the impression they give. Steamworks: Tags
Do the content disclosures match your boundaries?
Some Steam store pages include a developer-provided mature-content description. Read it for content that matters to you, such as violence, gore, or sexual content. For example, the page for Welcome to the Game discloses some nudity or sexual content, frequent violence or gore, and general mature content; that is an illustration from one game, not a universal rating or a complete guarantee for every horror title. If a disclosure is absent or too broad to answer a specific concern, don’t assume that the game contains no such material. Look for further detail in the description, media, or reviews before deciding.
What do recent reviews say—and are the complaints relevant to you?
Steam shows both a review score from the past 30 days and a lifetime score. Open the reviews behind those summaries, especially recent ones, and look for recurring comments about the parts you care about: gameplay, technical problems, content, value, business practices, or the community. A percentage can’t tell you why players recommend or criticize a game, and a single review may not reflect the broader experience. Will it run on your computer?
Open the game’s System Requirements section on its Steam store page. Check both the supported operating systems and the listed hardware requirements against your own computer; don’t assume a game will run just because Steam is available on your device. Is it a finished release or Early Access?
For an Early Access game, read the developer’s Early Access information and judge the current build on its own merits. Steam describes Early Access games as works in progress and notes that some developers may not finish their games. Its guidance is direct: “So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state.” Steam Support: Early Access

That means future features or a full release should not be the reason the purchase seems worthwhile. Ask whether the version available now offers an experience you want, and whether you’re comfortable with the project’s unfinished status.
What are the refund conditions?
Steam’s general guidance says a refund for a title can be requested within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours. This is subject to Steam’s policy, purchase-specific conditions, and possible exceptions; it is not an unconditional trial. Early Access purchases remain subject to Steam’s refund policy. Compare each live store page using the same questions, rather than choosing by tag or score alone:

- Purchase details: Confirm the current price and included content on each store page before checkout; these details are game-specific and can change.
