To make dark horror games easier to see and their quieter cues easier to hear on PS5, set up headphone output and test 3D audio or Audio Focus, calibrate HDR with your display, then use the game’s own brightness or gamma pattern. There is no single brightness number or audio mode that works best for every game, listener, and screen. Start with the reversible console settings below, compare the results in a familiar scene, and adjust one setting at a time.

Which PS5 settings should I change first?

Start with the settings that directly control your headphones and display, then tune the individual game. Keep the console’s video output on Automatic at first, and avoid changing several options at once: otherwise, it is harder to tell which adjustment helped.

  1. Set headphone output: open Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select your connected headset as the Output Device, and set Output to Headphones. Leave Switch Output Device Automatically on if you regularly connect that headset.
  2. Check volume: in the same settings area, set headphone volume to a comfortable level. Recheck it after enabling Audio Focus, because Sony warns that the feature can make headphone output loud.
  3. Try 3D audio: open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) > Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile and follow the listening prompts, or choose one of Sony’s five presets for a quicker setup.
  4. Calibrate HDR if you play in HDR: open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and complete all three on-screen calibration screens.
  5. Set the game’s image and sound: use its brightness or gamma pattern, check its own audio options, and test your changes in a scene you know.

This order gives you a useful baseline without assuming every horror game, headset, or TV behaves the same way. Keep a note of your original settings so you can reverse a change if the image or sound becomes harder to read.

How do I make dark horror games easier to see on PS5?

Calibrate the display at the console level, then set brightness or gamma in the game using that game’s own pattern. The PS5 instructions do not establish one numeric brightness value for every display and title, so a universal slider recommendation would be misleading.

Calibrate HDR with the PS5 screens

Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and follow all three calibration screens. This is preferable to guessing a number from another player: HDR quality depends on the TV or display and the rest of the home-entertainment setup. After calibration, judge visibility in the game itself rather than expecting a console adjustment to make every dark scene look identical.

Choose how HDR handles SDR games

For a library that mixes HDR and SDR games, On When Supported is the option that keeps non-HDR games in SDR. Always On converts even games and apps that are not HDR-compatible to HDR output, according to Sony. These modes are not interchangeable: if you want SDR titles to remain SDR, choose On When Supported rather than forcing HDR conversion.

HDR setting What it does When to choose it
On When Supported Uses HDR when a game or app supports it; non-HDR games remain in SDR. Use this when your library includes SDR games and you do not want them automatically converted to HDR.
Always On Converts games and apps that are not HDR-compatible to HDR output. Choose it only if you want the console to convert SDR content too; compare the result on your own display.

Use the game’s brightness or gamma pattern

Once the display is calibrated, use the title’s own brightness or gamma control and follow its pattern or on-screen guidance. The goal is to make the game’s intended visual cues legible without treating a slider value from another title as a standard. If dark areas still feel wrong, change one relevant control at a time and compare the same scene; do not compensate by repeatedly changing both console HDR and in-game brightness without tracking what changed.

How should I set PS5 resolution and display options?

Leave Resolution on Automatic initially. Sony says the console detects the connected TV’s capabilities and selects the highest resolution it supports; other video options should remain appropriate to the display unless you are troubleshooting or a particular game/display combination calls for a change.

PS5 also exposes VRR, 120 Hz Output, ALLM, RGB Range, and Video Transfer Rate under video output settings. The available guidance does not prescribe one universal value for these options, so changing them simply to improve dark-scene visibility is not a supported general fix. Keep their display-appropriate defaults unless you have a specific compatibility problem or reason to test an option.

  • Resolution: start with Automatic, which selects the highest supported TV resolution.
  • VRR and 120 Hz Output: leave at display-appropriate defaults unless troubleshooting or the game/display pairing requires an adjustment.
  • ALLM, RGB Range, and Video Transfer Rate: likewise, do not treat these as universal dark-scene controls.

If you do change a display option to troubleshoot, change one at a time and compare the same scene. That gives you a clearer result than altering several video settings together.

What headphone settings help me hear footsteps and quiet cues?

Route sound to the headset first, then compare stereo, personalized 3D audio, and Audio Focus. Audio Focus can emphasize faint sounds, but it can also make headphone output loud; raise emphasis gradually and keep volume comfortable.

Make sure the headset is the output device

Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select the connected headset as the Output Device, and set Output to Headphones. If you regularly connect that headset, Switch Output Device Automatically can remain on. Headphone volume is in the same settings family; adjust it before testing enhancements so you are not mistaking higher overall loudness for clearer detail.

Sony also lists Mono Audio for Headphones and Audio Format (Priority) in this settings family. The supplied instructions do not establish a special value for either setting for horror games, so there is no evidence-based universal change to recommend. If you adjust one while troubleshooting, note its original value and compare results in the same scene.

Build or select a 3D-audio profile

For a tailored setup, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) > Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile and follow the listening prompts. If you prefer a shorter setup, Sony provides five presets. Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones, then compare it with stereo in a familiar game.

Sony describes 3D audio as immersive surround sound intended to make the player feel inside the game. That description is a feature explanation, not a guarantee that every listener will prefer it or identify every cue more easily. Use a scene with known sounds and keep whichever mode makes those sounds easier for you to distinguish.

Use Audio Focus for sounds that are easy to miss

With headphones connected, go to Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus and turn on Use Audio Focus. Start with Boost Quiet Sounds if low-level ambience is getting lost, or Boost High Pitch to emphasize cues such as footsteps and metallic noises. Choose Weak first; move to Medium only if Weak does not help enough.

Audio Focus also offers Boost Voices and Boost Low Pitch. The available guidance identifies those focus types but does not say that either is a general improvement for horror-game cues. Try them only when the sound you need to follow fits that category. Because focus may raise headphone loudness, recheck volume after turning it on or changing its strength.

Listening choice What to compare Practical starting point
Stereo Whether cues are easy to distinguish without headphone 3D audio. Use as the reference when comparing modes.
Personalized 3D audio Whether the profile created from Sony’s listening prompts makes the game’s sounds clearer or more natural to you. Create the profile, enable 3D audio, then compare in a familiar scene.
One of Sony’s five 3D-audio presets Whether a preset suits you better than the personalized profile or stereo. Use a preset if you want a quicker setup.
Audio Focus: Weak Whether quiet, high-pitched, voice, or low-pitched emphasis helps with the cue you are trying to hear. Start with Boost Quiet Sounds or Boost High Pitch, depending on the cue.
Audio Focus: Medium Whether more emphasis helps without making output uncomfortably loud. Test only after Weak; recheck volume.

Should I use 3D audio or stereo for a horror game?

Neither mode is a universal winner. Sony provides personalized headphone 3D audio and five presets, but the useful test is whether you can more confidently distinguish the sounds that matter in a familiar game.

Use stereo as a comparison point, not as a mode that must be replaced. Enable headphone 3D audio and try the personalized profile or a preset; then return to stereo in the same scene. Listen for whether a sound is easier to notice and follow, rather than deciding on the basis of a general claim that surround sound is always better.

Keep Audio Focus separate from this comparison. It emphasizes sound categories such as quiet or high-pitched audio, whereas the 3D-audio choice is a separate headphone setting. First compare stereo and 3D audio at a comfortable volume; then test a suitable Audio Focus option if a particular kind of cue remains difficult to hear.

Which headset settings or hardware features matter?

Before considering new hardware, check whether your current headset can be selected as the PS5 output device and whether its comfort and sound work for your sessions. If you want documented game/chat balancing controls, Sony’s PULSE 3D wireless headset is one example: its instruction manual describes CHAT/GAME controls and says you can listen to game audio and chat audio simultaneously.

That documented feature does not establish that the headset is necessary, or that it will sound best for every player. The free PS5 settings are the right first step; compare any headset by the qualities that affect your use rather than assuming a particular model will solve a display or game-menu problem.

  • Positional clarity: can you follow the game’s cues in a way that makes sense to you?
  • Comfort: can you wear it for the length of your usual session?
  • Connection method: does it connect in the way you need for your PS5 setup?
  • Microphone needs: do you need to communicate with other players, or is listening the priority?
  • Game/chat balance: do you want separate control of those audio levels? Sony documents that control for PULSE 3D.

Do not buy a headset just to obtain headphone output or try PS5 3D audio: the console settings workflow is the starting point, and the available evidence does not say a particular headset is required for it.

What should I change in the game’s own settings?

Use each horror game’s own brightness or gamma pattern and check its audio and accessibility menus for controls that suit your needs. PS5 Game Presets can preselect Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, camera view, subtitles/audio, and language, but Sony notes that not every setting applies to every game.

Set brightness or gamma for that title

Follow the game’s on-screen calibration pattern rather than copying a numeric value from another game. Different titles can expose different controls, and the available Sony guidance supplies no single official brightness number for all games and displays. If you adjust brightness or gamma, compare the same scene afterward so you can judge that title’s result directly.

Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode by preference

PS5 Game Presets can select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, but not every game applies every preset. These are game-presentation choices, not a guaranteed fix for a scene that is too dark. If you change one, verify its effect inside the specific title instead of assuming the preset changed every game in your library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the title’s subtitle and audio options

Game Presets can also preselect camera view, subtitles/audio, and language, subject to the same limitation that some settings do not apply to every game. A title may offer its own relevant options, so check that game’s menus when you need subtitles or want to adjust its sound. The PS5 preset is a starting selection, not proof that the game supports or adopts every setting.

How do I troubleshoot if the picture is still too dark or cues are still hard to hear?

Use a repeatable comparison rather than making several changes at once. The goal is to isolate whether the issue is the console output, the individual game setting, the listening mode, or simply the volume level.

  1. If dark scenes remain difficult to read: confirm whether the game is HDR-compatible and check whether the console is set to On When Supported or Always On. If you do not want SDR games converted, use On When Supported.
  2. If the HDR image still seems wrong: rerun Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and complete the three screens. Then use the game’s own brightness or gamma pattern instead of applying an arbitrary number.
  3. If one game looks different from another: check that title’s own display controls. Game Presets do not apply to every game, and there is no universal brightness value for every title and display.
  4. If headphone cues seem absent or faint: verify the headset is selected under Settings > Sound > Audio Output and that Output to Headphones is set. Confirm headphone volume is comfortable before testing sound enhancements.
  5. If 3D audio seems less clear: compare it with stereo in the same familiar scene. Try a different one of Sony’s presets or the personalized profile rather than assuming 3D audio must be better for you.
  6. If Audio Focus helps but sounds too loud: lower headphone volume and return the focus strength to Weak. Sony warns that Audio Focus can make headphone output loud.

Record the setting you changed and what happened. If the comparison does not improve the scene or cue, restore the previous value before testing another option; this avoids leaving a collection of untracked changes that are difficult to diagnose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save different PS5 display settings for each horror game?

The available PS5 guidance describes console-level HDR and video-output controls, plus Game Presets for selected game preferences. It does not establish that every title can save its own independent display calibration, so check the individual game’s menu rather than assuming brightness settings transfer or are isolated.

Does Audio Focus work through TV speakers?

Sony’s instructions describe Audio Focus for headphone use, and the supplied setup path starts with headphones connected. They do not establish Audio Focus as a TV-speaker feature.

Will PS5 Game Presets apply to every horror game?

No. Sony notes that some preset settings do not apply to every game. A preset can select preferences such as Performance Mode or subtitles/audio, but the title itself determines whether it uses them.

Do I need PULSE 3D to use PS5 headphone audio?

The PS5 audio-output instructions say to select the connected headset as the Output Device; they do not identify PULSE 3D as a requirement. The documented PULSE 3D distinction in this context is its game/chat balancing controls.
