“Change the ball” can mean two different things in Rocket League: changing where it goes during Free Play, or changing how it looks. Use Rocket League’s built-in Free Play bindings to reposition or launch it; use a separate BakkesMod plugin if you want a custom ball skin.
Change the ball’s movement in Free Play
Rocket League’s built-in Free Play controls change the ball’s position or trajectory for practice. They do not select a different ball appearance. The official Rocket League guide, published November 29, 2021, lists five actions:

| Pass Ball | Sends the ball toward your car. |
| Launch Ball | Acts similarly to a Hoops tip-off. |
| Defend Shot | Sends the ball toward the closest goal. |
To assign or change the button for one of these actions, follow Epic Games Support’s Free Play ball-control instructions:
- Enter Free Play.
- Open Settings and select the Controls tab.
- Choose View/Change Bindings.
- Scroll toward the bottom of the list.
- Select the Free Play Control you want to change.
- Press the button you want to assign.
Check the existing assignments before choosing a button: the official guide notes that default ball-control buttons may conflict with other controls. Free Play’s Training tab also includes options such as game speed, disabling goal reset, and boost behavior.

Use BakkesMod to reposition the ball
BakkesMod supports plugins that can add Free Play behavior, including custom ball repositioning. Its SDK tutorial demonstrates a developer-created plugin that checks whether the game is in Free Play, retrieves the ball and local car, and sets the ball’s position above the car. The example is a plugin-development tutorial, not evidence that its sample command is available in a typical BakkesMod installation.
If you already have a compatible plugin, its own instructions determine how to use its feature. The BakkesMod SDK README says plugins can be loaded from the in-game console, opened with F6, by entering plugin load filename without the .dll extension. This describes loading a plugin file; it does not install a ball-control plugin or guarantee that a particular command exists.
Change the ball’s appearance with a skin plugin
For a custom-looking ball, the community Custom Ball Online plugin repository documents a separate workflow: install the plugin, put skin files in its BallTextures directory, select a skin in the plugin menu, then join a match. The repository documents cbo_apply_ball_skin as a console command to apply the selected skin; it says you can bind the command if automatic application is not working.
The plugin describes its customization as client-side. Its documentation does not establish whether other players see the changed appearance, so do not assume a custom skin changes the ball for everyone in an online match. Plugin compatibility and installation instructions can change; check the repository’s current release information before installing or troubleshooting.

Which method should you use?
- Move, pass, dribble, launch, or defend the ball in practice: change the native Free Play control bindings in Rocket League’s settings.
- Place the ball through a BakkesMod feature: use a plugin that actually provides that feature; an SDK tutorial’s sample code is not a standard command in every installation.
- Change the ball’s visual skin: use a compatible ball-skin plugin and its skin files, rather than the built-in Free Play controls.
