To change where the Xbox app installs PC games, open the app, select your profile button, choose Settings, open Install Options (or, in some releases, General), and select another drive under Change where this app installs games by default. Use Change folder to choose a particular directory, such as D:XboxGames. Turn on Ask me for install options on every install if you want to choose a destination each time.

This changes the default for new installations. It does not automatically move games already installed on your PC. Existing titles can be relocated only when the Xbox app exposes a supported Move or Manage action for that game.

How do I change where the Xbox app installs games?

The setting is in the Xbox app rather than in the Windows storage page. The exact placement can differ between Xbox app releases, but the current Windows 11 path is profile button, Settings, then Install Options.

  1. Open the Xbox app. Sign in if the app requests your Microsoft account.
  2. Open the app settings. Select your profile picture or profile button, then choose Settings.
  3. Find the installation controls. Select Install Options. Some versions put these controls under General instead.
  4. Choose a drive. Under Change where this app installs games by default, open the drive selector and choose the drive you want to use. The selector shows only drives the Xbox app currently considers available.
  5. Choose a folder if needed. Select Change folder, browse to a directory on that drive, and confirm it. A path such as D:XboxGames is a practical, easy-to-recognize choice; the folder does not have to use that name.
  6. Decide whether to ask every time. Enable Ask me for install options on every install if you regularly switch between drives. Leave it disabled if you want the saved default used automatically.
  7. Verify the change. Start a small installation or open the next installation dialog and check that the selected drive and folder are offered. This confirms the app accepted the setting without disturbing games already on another drive.

Drive selection and folder selection are separate controls. Selecting a drive alone changes the storage volume; using Change folder lets you direct installations to a particular directory on that volume.

What does the default location setting actually control?

It controls the starting destination for a new Xbox app installation. It is not a global Windows storage rule, and it does not change the location used by unrelated launchers or applications. The Xbox selector can also show a different set of choices from File Explorer because the app decides which attached drives are currently available for game installation.

If you select a drive but do not choose a folder, the app uses its normal game-library location on that drive. If you use Change folder, you are specifying the directory in which the Xbox app should place future game files. A dedicated folder is easier to identify later, but there is no requirement to call it XboxGames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make the Xbox app ask for a destination on every install?

Yes. In Settings > Install Options (or General in some releases), turn on Ask me for install options on every install. The Xbox app will then present the destination choice when you begin a new game installation instead of silently using the saved default.

This is useful when a Windows drive is nearly full but a secondary drive has room, or when you keep a permanent library on one disk and temporary installs on another. If you normally use one destination, leaving the option off removes an extra decision from each install. You can switch the prompt on or off later without changing the folder that already contains installed games.

The prompt controls where new installs are started. It is not a migration switch for games that are already installed, and changing it after an install has begun does not guarantee that an in-progress download will be redirected. For a download already in the queue, stop and review its installation options rather than assuming the new default will be applied retroactively.

Will changing the default location move games that are already installed?

No. The default-location control applies primarily to future installations. Existing games normally remain in their current folders, so changing the setting will not by itself free space on the old drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some titles expose a separate move or manage control when the Xbox app’s advanced installation features support relocating that game. Availability is title- and app-dependent; a game without that control must stay where it is unless you uninstall and install it again at the new destination. Do not manually drag protected game folders in File Explorer as a substitute for a supported move command; the app may no longer recognize the installation.

How to check whether a game can be moved

  1. Open the Xbox app library and select the installed game.
  2. Open the game’s Manage or options view.
  3. Look for a Move action and review the destination offered by the app.
  4. Confirm the move only after checking that the target drive has enough free space and will remain connected.
  5. Wait for the Xbox app to finish and then launch the title from the library to confirm that it is still recognized.

A move may look like a download in the Xbox queue. Xbox release notes describe cases where the queue displays downloading while the files are being moved rather than downloaded again. Avoid cancelling solely because that status appears; first check whether the drive activity and available space indicate a local move. Interrupting a move can leave the game unavailable until the app completes recovery.

What should I do if the drive does not appear?

The Xbox app lists only drives it currently recognizes as available. A drive that appears in File Explorer is not necessarily offered in the Xbox selector at that moment.

  • Confirm that the disk is connected and visible in Windows before reopening the Xbox app.
  • For a removable disk, reconnect it directly to the PC rather than through an unreliable hub, then revisit Settings > Install Options.
  • Check the selector again after Windows has finished detecting the drive. Do not choose a different location until the intended drive is actually listed.
  • If the drive remains absent, restart the Xbox app and, if necessary, restart Windows before trying the setting again.
  • Make sure you are selecting the intended volume, not merely a shortcut or a folder that points to another disk.

The available-drive list is an app decision, not a universal list of every volume attached to the computer. The guidance does not establish a single capacity, filesystem, or benchmark requirement that guarantees a drive will appear. If the disk is intermittently disappearing from Windows itself, solve that connection or detection problem first; changing Xbox settings cannot make an unavailable volume reliable.

How do I fix “You can’t change your default install location while that folder is in use”?

This message means the Xbox app is treating the selected folder as occupied or otherwise unavailable for the default location. Microsoft Q&A guidance suggests repairing and resetting the Xbox app, selecting a fresh folder, and restarting Windows. The labels can differ slightly between Windows releases.

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu, and select Advanced options.
  4. Use Repair first. This attempts to correct the app without removing its data.
  5. If the error persists, use Reset. You may need to sign in again afterward.
  6. Create a plainly named folder on the target drive, for example D:XboxGames. Use a new directory rather than a folder already used by another game-management location.
  7. Open the Xbox app, return to its installation settings, select the target drive, and use Change folder to select the new directory.
  8. Restart the PC, then try the setting or a small new installation again.

Repair and reset are community troubleshooting guidance rather than a guarantee for every configuration. If resetting removes the app’s remembered preferences, sign back in and repeat the installation-location steps. A fresh folder also makes it easier to tell whether the error concerns the path you selected or the app’s stored configuration.

Should I reuse a folder that already contains games?

Use a new, dedicated directory when troubleshooting a folder-in-use message. A folder that already belongs to another game library or installation service can be treated as occupied. Separating the Xbox library in a clearly named directory reduces confusion when you later inspect, move, or remove games. The app does not require a specific folder name, so choose one that you can recognize without implying that it is a universal Xbox path.

Should I install Xbox PC games on an internal or external drive?

Both can be used, but they suit different library plans. An internal SSD is the more conservative choice for a permanent library because Xbox release notes document possible launch problems with games installed on external drives. An external SSD is useful when portability matters or when the PC has no free internal slot.

Consideration Internal SSD External SSD
Best fit A fixed library that stays with one PC A portable library or a PC with limited internal expansion
Documented caveat No external-drive launch caveat applies Xbox release notes describe possible launch and management issues on external drives
Installation effort Requires an available internal slot or compatible installation Requires a suitable port, cable, and enclosure
Portability Low; moving it requires opening or reconfiguring the PC High; the drive can be disconnected and carried between compatible PCs
Capacity guidance No universal capacity recommendation is established No universal capacity recommendation is established
Performance evidence No benchmark figures are established here No benchmark figures are established here

For external storage, verify the computer’s available port and the enclosure’s interface before buying or assigning the drive. A drive’s connector, cable, and enclosure all need to match the PC’s practical connection. No benchmark result establishes that one interface will deliver a particular Xbox loading speed, so avoid treating a port label as a guaranteed game-performance figure.

The practical portability advantage does not remove the need to keep the disk connected when launching a game. An unexpected disconnect can interrupt access to the library, and Xbox documentation identifies possible launch and management issues for external installations. If a computer has an available internal slot and the library is intended to stay on that machine, internal storage is the lower-risk arrangement.

How do I verify that a new game is using the new folder?

Use the next installation dialog as the check rather than assuming the setting was saved. Start an install that you can pause or cancel, inspect the displayed destination, and confirm the path begins on the intended drive. A small test install is safer than discovering the mistake after a very large game has filled the wrong disk.

  1. Open the Xbox app’s library and select a game that is not installed.
  2. Start the installation.
  3. If Ask me for install options on every install is enabled, review the destination in the prompt. If it is disabled, check the destination shown in the installation details or queue.
  4. Pause or cancel the test if the path is wrong, return to Install Options, and select the drive or folder again.
  5. Once the path is correct, resume or restart the intended installation.

Verify the drive letter as well as the folder name. Selecting the correct folder on the wrong volume can still consume space on the system drive. If you use an external SSD, verify that the same physical drive remains connected after the test; reconnecting a different disk with a similar label does not make it the original library.

Changing the Xbox app’s storage destination is separate from changing Windows’ update and peer-download behavior. Delivery Optimization settings are under Windows Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options; they control update and peer-download traffic, not the folder where Xbox game files are stored.

What should I know before using a removable drive for a game library?

Plan for the drive to remain available whenever you launch or update those games. External installation can be convenient, but the Xbox release notes’ documented launch caveat means it is not the lowest-risk choice for a library you expect to use every day.

  • Keep the connection consistent. Use the same physical drive and a reliable connection when installing, updating, or launching.
  • Do not disconnect during a move. A move that appears as “downloading” in the queue still needs uninterrupted access to both the source and destination while the app completes its operation.
  • Leave free space. The guides provide no universal capacity number, so size the drive around the games you actually plan to keep and leave room for updates.
  • Prefer internal storage for permanence. If the PC has an available internal SSD slot and the library will stay on that computer, internal storage avoids the external-drive caveat.
  • Use the per-install prompt when space changes. A saved default is convenient, but asking each time prevents a nearly full system drive from receiving a large installation by mistake.
  • Check the drive before maintenance. Confirm it is visible in Windows before starting an update, move, or repair so the Xbox app is not working against a disconnected destination.

Is there a recommended drive size or speed?

No universal capacity recommendation, benchmark, or speed figure is established for this setting. The practical choice depends on the games you intend to keep, the free space needed for their updates, and whether the drive is internal or external. Avoid buying based on an invented minimum number. Instead, check the sizes of the titles you actually plan to install and leave additional room so updates do not immediately fill the volume.

What is the difference between changing the drive and changing the folder?

The drive selector chooses the storage volume, such as a second internal disk or an external SSD. Change folder then lets you choose a directory on that selected volume. You can therefore place the library in a clearly named directory without changing the volume itself.

For example, selecting drive D: and then choosing D:XboxGames gives the Xbox app a specific home for future installs. Selecting D: without changing the folder still changes the destination volume, but it leaves the app to use its normal folder choice there. If the app rejects a path, create a new directory on the selected drive and try again rather than repeatedly selecting a folder that reports as in use.

What is the quickest decision for a second drive?

Choose an internal SSD when the library is permanent and the PC can accept one. Choose an external SSD when portability or lack of an internal slot is more important, while accepting that Xbox documents possible launch and management issues for external installations.

After selecting the drive, use a dedicated folder, verify it with a small installation, and remember that the setting governs new installs rather than automatically relocating the games already on your system. Turn on the per-install prompt if your storage needs change frequently; leave it off when one destination is almost always correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting old games to move automatically. The default setting does not free space on the previous drive.
  • Assuming every File Explorer volume will appear. The Xbox app lists only drives it currently considers available.
  • Choosing a folder already in use. Create a fresh dedicated folder when the app reports that the current folder is occupied.
  • Cancelling a move because it says “downloading.” That queue label can describe a local move.
  • Treating Delivery Optimization as storage control. Its Windows settings affect update and peer-download behavior, not the Xbox game folder.
  • Disconnecting an external drive after installation. The library still needs that drive available for launches and updates, and external installations have documented caveats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Xbox app suggest an XboxGames folder?

A dedicated folder makes the library easy to identify and keeps game files separate from unrelated data. The name is only a practical example; the Xbox app does not require that exact folder name.

If I enable install prompts, will games already in my queue move?

No. The prompt is for choosing a destination when starting a new installation. It does not retroactively reconfigure games that are already installed or automatically relocate an existing queue item.

Why can a move show “downloading” even when my internet is idle?

Xbox release notes describe moves that use the queue’s downloading status while files are being transferred locally. Check drive activity and free space before assuming the game is being downloaded again.

Does changing the Xbox install drive change where Windows updates are downloaded?

No. Xbox game storage and Windows Delivery Optimization are separate settings. Delivery Optimization is managed under Windows Settings, Windows Update, and Advanced options, while the game folder is controlled inside the Xbox app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my second drive visible in File Explorer but missing in Xbox settings?

The Xbox app lists only drives it currently considers available. Confirm the drive is connected and recognized by Windows, restart the Xbox app or Windows, and check the selector again.

Can I use any folder name for the Xbox library?

Yes. A name such as XboxGames is a practical organizational example, not a universal requirement. Use a new, dedicated folder on the selected drive when possible.

Should I buy an external SSD or install an internal one?

An internal SSD is the more conservative choice for a permanent library. An external SSD is portable and useful when there is no internal slot, but Xbox release notes document possible launch and management issues for external installations.

Will repairing or resetting the Xbox app delete my installed games?

Repair and reset are troubleshooting actions for the app, and reset may remove remembered preferences or require you to sign in again. The guidance does not guarantee the outcome for every configuration, so record your chosen install path and be prepared to repeat the settings afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a specific capacity or benchmark speed?

No universal capacity, benchmark, or speed figure is established for this setting. Size the drive around the games you plan to keep, leave room for updates, and verify that an external drive’s port and enclosure match the PC.

The Bottom Line

Open the Xbox app’s profile menu, choose Settings and Install Options (or General), select the desired drive, and use Change folder for a specific directory. Enable per-install prompts when you need to switch destinations. This changes future installs; move existing games only through a supported Move or Manage action. Internal SSDs are the safer permanent choice, while external SSDs add portability but carry documented launch and management caveats.
