To make text larger in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text size, move the slider, check the preview, and select Apply. If you also need larger icons, buttons, and apps, change Settings > System > Display > Scale. For a temporary close-up, use Magnifier with Windows key + Plus (+).

Which Windows 11 setting should I use?

Choose the control based on what needs to look larger: Text size changes lettering, Scale enlarges the broader interface, and Magnifier zooms the screen temporarily. These are separate built-in Windows 11 options, and you can combine them if one change does not meet your needs.

Control What it changes Effect on layout and icons How long it lasts
Text size Text, including text in title bars, menus, and icons Primarily lettering Remains in effect until changed
Display Scale Text, icons, buttons, images, and apps together Enlarges the interface as a whole Remains in effect until changed
Magnifier A zoomed view of screen content Magnifies the view rather than resetting the interface layout Temporary; close it to return to the usual view

Use Text size if the lettering alone is difficult to read

This is the most targeted option when menus or other text look too small but icons, controls, and the overall arrangement already feel comfortable. Microsoft describes this setting as a way to make only screen text larger.

Use Scale if the whole interface feels too small

Scale is the better fit when you need more than larger lettering: it enlarges icons, buttons, images, and apps along with text. This can be more helpful when controls are difficult to see or select, but it also takes up more screen space.

Use Magnifier for a quick, temporary close-up

Magnifier is useful when you need to inspect one area without permanently changing the usual text or display settings. It is a zoom tool rather than a replacement for choosing a comfortable everyday interface size.

How do I change text size in Windows 11?

Use the Text size slider in Accessibility settings, then apply the change. Microsoft says it affects lettering in places such as title bars, menus, and icon text.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility, then Text size.
  3. Drag the slider toward a larger setting. Check the live preview as you adjust it.
  4. When the preview is readable, select Apply.

Windows text scaling has a documented default of 100% and a supported range up to 225%, according to Microsoft’s 2026 documentation. The slider and preview let you judge the result on your own display rather than choosing a value just because it is larger.

Text scaling is not guaranteed to look identical in every program. Microsoft says WinUI apps support text scaling by default; older apps or apps built with custom frameworks may need additional support. If the text changes in Windows menus but not in a particular app, that difference may reflect how the app handles text scaling rather than a failed Windows setting.

How do I make everything bigger, not just text?

Change Display Scale under System settings. This enlarges the interface as a group, which is useful when both lettering and non-text elements such as icons or buttons are too small.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System, then Display.
  3. Under Scale & layout, choose a larger percentage from the Scale menu.
  4. Check whether the text, controls, and app content are now comfortable to use.

Microsoft gives 125%, 150%, and 175% as example Scale values. Those are examples, not a requirement to use one particular setting; choose a predefined value that suits your display and the space you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most scaling changes apply immediately, but Microsoft notes that some apps may need you to sign out and sign back in before the change appears. If an app still looks unchanged after selecting a Scale value, sign out and back in, then check it again.

How do I zoom in temporarily with Magnifier?

Press Windows key + Plus (+) to turn on Magnifier or zoom in, and Windows key + Minus (-) to zoom out. Press Windows key + Esc to close it.

  • Full HD monitor with 1920x1080 resolution and AOC brand technology; ideal for webinars, meetings, digital work, entertainment, and more

  • Stand tilts -5 to 20 degrees, offering an adjustable viewing angle
  • Energy Star certified; meets stringent energy efficiency requirements to reduce power consumption
  • Zoom in: Windows key + Plus (+)
  • Zoom out: Windows key + Minus (-)
  • Close Magnifier: Windows key + Esc

Microsoft documents these keyboard shortcuts as the quick way to turn Magnifier on, adjust the zoom, and exit. Because Magnifier is temporary, it is a useful choice when only a brief close-up is needed; it does not replace the persistent Text size or Scale settings.

Can I combine Text size, Scale, and Magnifier?

Yes. They are separate controls, so you can use more than one when a single setting does not provide a comfortable result. For example, a modest text-size adjustment can improve legibility without changing the broader layout, while Magnifier remains available for an occasional close-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make one persistent change at a time and check the result before adding another. If you increase both text size and Scale substantially, the combined interface may use more screen space than you want. Magnifier can provide a temporary view without requiring another permanent adjustment.

Why might changing the size make the screen look soft?

If content looks soft after changing display scaling, Microsoft recommends using the display resolution marked Recommended. Check that resolution before concluding that the size setting itself is the problem.

To review it, open Settings > System > Display and look for the resolution option marked Recommended. The documented guidance is to use that recommended resolution if scaling has made the display look soft.

Should I use a custom display scale?

Usually, start with a predefined Scale option rather than entering a custom percentage. Microsoft Support documents custom display scaling from 100% to 500%, but does not recommend custom scaling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The custom range is not the same as the documented Text size range: they refer to different Windows controls. If a predefined Scale choice is adequate, there is no need to use a custom value. The range itself does not establish that every app will render well at every custom setting.

How should I choose a setting for gaming?

For a Windows desktop that is hard to read between games, use Text size if the problem is lettering, or Display Scale if icons and other interface elements also need to be larger. Use Magnifier when you only need an occasional close-up.

The documented settings describe Windows text scaling and display scaling; they do not establish that every game will respond in the same way. Microsoft’s guidance notes that app behavior can vary with its framework, so check the result in the specific game or app you use rather than assuming the Windows change will affect every screen identically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Windows text size change some apps but not others?

Microsoft says WinUI apps support text scaling by default, while older or custom-framework apps may need additional support. That difference can explain why Windows menus respond while a particular program does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 225% Text size the same as 500% display scaling?

No. The figures describe different controls: Microsoft’s 2026 documentation gives Text size a supported range up to 225%, while Microsoft Support documents a separate custom display-scale range up to 500%. Microsoft does not recommend custom display scaling.

Do I need to sign out after changing Windows 11 scaling?

Most changes apply immediately, according to Microsoft, but some apps may require a sign-out and sign-in before the new scaling appears.
