To change a V Rising server’s game preset, stop the server, edit the GameSettingsPreset value in ServerHostSettings.json, save the file, and start the server again. Use a non-empty preset name such as StandardPvP to load the bundled rules. Set the value to an empty string ("") when you want the server to use your custom ServerGameSettings.json values instead. A launch argument, environment variable, or hosting-panel selection can override the JSON file, so check those layers if the change does not stick.

What GameSettingsPreset controls
GameSettingsPreset selects a complete bundle of game-rule values for a V Rising dedicated server. Presets can define settings such as PvE or PvP behavior, gathering and crafting rates, castle rules, durability, and other world parameters. The server reads the named preset when it boots rather than requiring every rule to be entered individually.

In Stunlock Studios’ 1.0.x dedicated-server instructions, the documented example is StandardPvP. The same documentation identifies the -preset launch option and the VR_PRESET environment variable. The current repository lists a separate 1.1.x-pc instruction page, but the retrieved 1.1.x material does not display the preset entries. Treat the 1.0.x names and override details as a documented reference, then confirm the key and available names in your installed server files.
Preset mode versus custom mode
The important distinction is whether GameSettingsPreset is empty.

Do not edit ServerGameSettings.json while leaving a named GameSettingsPreset active and expect every custom value to win. The preset can be reapplied at startup and can make those edits appear to be ignored.
Before you edit the server
- Stop the server completely. Editing a live file risks a write from the running process overwriting your change.
- Record the current configuration. Copy the generated settings files into a save-data or backup folder, including
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.json. A host update or server reinstall can regenerate the files. - Confirm which installation you are editing. A machine may contain more than one V Rising server directory, and a panel may expose a separate data volume.
- Check the server version. The explicit preset examples in the official instructions are from 1.0.x; verify the 1.1.x-pc layout and names against the files installed by your build.
- Keep a rollback copy. If the server fails to start, restore the previous JSON file rather than deleting settings at random.
Change the preset in a self-hosted installation
1. Locate the settings directory
Third-party dedicated-server guides commonly place the generated files under the server installation’s settings directory:

<V Rising server installation>/VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/Look for ServerHostSettings.json and ServerGameSettings.json in that directory. The exact root depends on how SteamCMD or another deployment method installed the server. Some community pages describe a different save-data path, so use the files actually loaded by your installation and not a similarly named file from an old backup.
2. Back up the generated files
With the process stopped, copy both JSON files to a dated backup directory outside the generated settings folder. For example:

3. Edit GameSettingsPreset
Open ServerHostSettings.json in a text editor that preserves UTF-8 text and JSON punctuation. Find the existing key and change only its value. A named preset looks like this:

"GameDifficultyPreset": ""The exact overlap between game and difficulty settings is not fully specified in the current official snippets. A reported third-party test says the difficulty preset is applied after the game preset and therefore wins for shared values. If a difficulty preset remains named, inspect both files and treat it as a possible override.
5. Save, validate, and restart
- Save the file without changing its
.jsonextension. - Check that the edited file is valid JSON. Most code editors will flag a missing comma or quote; a local JSON validator can also be used without modifying the file.
- Start the V Rising server and wait until it finishes loading.
- Connect as an administrator and check a rule that differs between the old and new presets, or inspect the startup log for the loaded settings.
- Stop and start the server once more if your management tool performs a separate “apply” or “install” step. The effective configuration is the one present after a complete boot, not merely the text saved in the editor.
Preset names: use the names installed on your server
Preset names are not consistent across every guide, game version, or host panel. The 1.0.x official example is StandardPvP. Other sources report names such as StandardPvE, StandardPvP_Hard, SoloPvP, DuoPvP, StandardPvP_WeekendSiege, and Difficulty_Normal. These should not be treated as a universal list.
Open the server’s preset directory and copy the filename or identifier used by your build. The official 1.0.x instructions identify the bundled game presets under:

Command-line and environment-variable overrides
The JSON value is not always the highest-priority source. Stunlock Studios’ 1.0.x instructions document these equivalent ways to select a preset:

If you set the JSON value to "" but the server still loads a preset, inspect the service file, startup script, container definition, or panel launch arguments for -preset and inspect the process environment for VR_PRESET. Remove or clear the override, then restart.
The difficulty equivalent documented for 1.0.x is -difficultyPreset with the environment variable VR_DIFFICULTY_PRESET. A named difficulty override can continue to affect the result even after you clear the game preset.
Change the preset in a hosted control panel
Managed V Rising hosts commonly expose the same setting through a dropdown labelled Game Setting Preset, GameSettingsPreset, or a similar phrase. The labels and save flow vary, but the safe sequence is the same:
- Stop the server from the panel and wait for the status to show it is offline.
- Open the server settings or configuration editor.
- Choose the required preset from the game-settings dropdown.
- For custom values, choose Custom, None, or the panel’s equivalent empty option. Do not choose a named preset and then expect
ServerGameSettings.jsonedits to override it. - Save or apply the configuration.
- Open the file manager or advanced editor, if available, and confirm that the panel wrote the intended value to
ServerHostSettings.json. - Start the server and verify a rule in-game or in the startup log.
Some panels regenerate ServerGameSettings.json when a preset is active. If your custom values disappear on every boot, return to the dropdown, select the custom/none option, save, and then edit the game-settings file.

Troubleshoot a preset that will not change
The server keeps loading the old preset
- Confirm the server was stopped before editing and that you restarted the same instance afterward.
- Check for
-presetin the startup command andVR_PRESETin the service or container environment. - Make sure the JSON contains one active
GameSettingsPresetkey, not a duplicate key elsewhere in the object. - Verify that the name exactly matches an installed preset. A misspelled or unavailable name can be ignored, rejected, or replaced by a panel default.
- Check whether the panel has an independent dropdown that rewrites the file during startup.
Custom ServerGameSettings.json values are ignored
- Set
GameSettingsPresetto"". - Set
GameDifficultyPresetto""as well if you require fully custom difficulty and game values. - Remove command-line and environment overrides.
- Save the custom file only after the preset has been cleared, then restart and test one distinctive value.
The server fails to start after editing
- Restore the backup files you made before the change.
- Check for a missing comma, unmatched brace, smart quotation mark, or trailing comma in the JSON.
- Confirm that the value is a string, for example
"StandardPvP", rather than an unquoted token. - Compare the file with a newly generated settings file from the same server version; updates can add or rename properties.
The change disappears after an update
Generated settings can be replaced when the server is updated or reinstalled. Keep your backup in the save-data area recommended by your host or deployment method, outside the game’s generated installation folders. After every update, compare the new files with your backup and reapply the preset only after confirming that the current version still uses the same key and identifier.
Game preset and difficulty preset are separate choices
Do not confuse GameSettingsPreset with GameDifficultyPreset. The official 1.0.x instructions give difficulty examples including Difficulty_Easy, Difficulty_Normal, and Difficulty_Brutal, with the launch flag -difficultyPreset and environment variable VR_DIFFICULTY_PRESET. They are stored in the separate GameDifficultyPresets directory.
If a server has both values populated, the final behavior may combine two preset layers. A reported issue and related pull request indicate that difficulty settings were applied after game settings for overlapping fields, but that behavior is not confirmed as a universal rule by the official documentation. When exact values matter, clear both preset fields and define the desired rules explicitly in ServerGameSettings.json, then test after a clean restart.
Version and path cautions
The official repository lists separate instructions for server versions, and the 1.1.x-pc page is identified as the current version in the retrieved material. Because the available 1.1.x snippet does not show the preset entries, do not assume that every 1.0.x path, launch option, or preset name is unchanged. Before moving a configuration between versions:
