To change a DayZ server’s map, stop the server, open serverDZ.cfg, and change the template value inside class Missions. The value must exactly match a mission-folder name under the server’s mpmissions directory. For the stock maps, use dayzOffline.chernarusplus for Chernarus+, dayzOffline.enoch for Livonia, or dayzOffline.sakhal for Sakhal. Save the file, then start the server again. Install any required DLC or map mods before players try to join.

What actually selects the map
DayZ does not normally use a separate “map” switch in the server settings. The mission template selected in serverDZ.cfg determines which terrain and mission data the server loads. Open the configuration file in the server’s root directory and locate the class Missions block. A typical entry looks like this:

};The text between the quotation marks is the important part. It must be an exact match for a mission folder in mpmissions, including spelling, punctuation, and capitalization used by the folder name. The line must also retain its semicolon. A valid configuration can still fail to load the intended map if the template is almost, but not exactly, correct.
Bohemia’s documented naming pattern is <MissionName>.<TerrainName>. In practice, the stock templates use the names shown below. Custom missions follow the same principle: the configured template points to the corresponding mission directory.

Prepare the server before editing
Stop the server completely
Shut down the DayZ server before changing its configuration. If the process remains online, a host panel or the server itself may write the old configuration back when it closes. Wait until the control panel reports that the process has stopped, or confirm that the dedicated-server process is no longer running before opening the file.
Make a backup of the current save
Changing the template can result in a separate persistence state for the new mission. If the current world matters, copy the existing save data before switching. Keep the backup outside the live server folders and label it with the old map and the date. Do not delete the old data merely because the new map starts with a fresh world; you may need it if you switch back.

The exact persistence behavior when moving between maps is not consistently confirmed in primary documentation. Some summaries state that each template uses a path such as mpmissions/<template>/storage_1/, but that detail should not be treated as a guarantee for every server build or host. A backup is the safe way to preserve the old state.
Check the target map’s requirements
- Livonia requires the Livonia DLC for players to join.
- Sakhal requires the Frostline DLC.
- Community maps commonly require one or more server and client mods.
- The target mission folder must be present under
mpmissionsbefore the server starts.
DLC ownership and mod installation are separate from selecting the template. A correct line in serverDZ.cfg cannot supply missing game content.

Change the map in serverDZ.cfg
- Stop the DayZ server. Do not edit the live configuration while the process is running.
- Open the server root. Find
serverDZ.cfgin the directory from which the DayZ server is launched. On a rented server, this is usually available through the host’s file manager or FTP/SFTP access. - Find the missions section. Search for
class Missions, then locate the line beginning withtemplate =. It may currently containdayzOffline.chernarusplus,dayzOffline.enoch, or another mission name. - Replace only the template value. Keep the quotation marks and semicolon. For example, to select Livonia, change the line to
template = "dayzOffline.enoch";. - Save the file without changing its name. Ensure the file remains
serverDZ.cfg, rather than becoming a text file with an extra extension such as.txt. - Start the server. Allow it to finish loading, then connect with a client that has the required DLC and mods.
Do not replace the entire class Missions block when a one-line edit is sufficient. Preserving the host’s existing formatting and other mission settings reduces the chance of introducing an unrelated configuration error.

Switching from one stock map to another
Chernarus+ to Livonia
Stop the server, back up the Chernarus+ save, and set the template to dayzOffline.enoch. Confirm that the server installation includes the Livonia content and tell players that the Livonia DLC is required. Start the server and verify that the loading screen, spawn locations, and world are Livonia rather than the previous terrain.

Livonia to Chernarus+
Use the same procedure in reverse and set template = "dayzOffline.chernarusplus";. Keep the Livonia data backed up instead of overwriting it. Players who only have the base game can join Chernarus+, provided the server is not also requiring other content.
Any stock map to Sakhal
Set the value to dayzOffline.sakhal and confirm Frostline availability for every joining player. A player who lacks the required DLC may be unable to connect even when the server configuration is correct.
Using a custom or community map
Custom maps use the same configuration mechanism, but their mission folder and dependencies are supplied by the map author or hosting setup. Install the map’s required server files and mods first, then inspect the mpmissions directory for the exact mission-folder name. Put that name in the template line, for example:
template = "customMissionName";The example is illustrative; do not type it unless a folder with precisely that name exists. A mismatch between the folder and the configuration is one of the most common reasons a custom map fails to load.

Community method for creating a mission folder
Community reports describe copying the stock dayzOffline.chernarusplus folder inside mpmissions, renaming the copy to the new mission name, and setting template to that exact name. Those reports are forum-sourced and are not a verified procedure for every current map or server version. Use the map author’s installation instructions when they differ, and make a backup before modifying mission files.
Install dependencies on both sides
Many community maps depend on mods. The server must load the required server-side content, and each player may need matching client-side workshop items and versions. A template change alone does not install a mod, publish a key, or update a client. If the server starts but clients are rejected for missing content, review the map’s dependency list and the host’s mod-loading settings.
Control panels versus manual editing
Some hosts expose a map selector in their control panel. Treat that selector as a convenience layer: after applying it, check the resulting serverDZ.cfg or startup configuration and confirm that the generated template matches the mission folder. A panel may offer only stock maps, may use a different label from the real template, or may overwrite a manual edit during the next restart.
Manual editing is necessary when the panel does not list the map, when a custom mission folder is involved, or when you need to diagnose which file the server is actually reading. The decisive test is the active launch configuration and the template value it supplies, not the label displayed in a dashboard.

The -mission launch parameter
Bohemia’s server documentation also describes a -mission= launch parameter for defining the mission. The template entry in serverDZ.cfg is the usual approach for a normal server configuration. If a launch script or host panel supplies -mission=, it may affect which mission is selected or which configuration takes precedence. Check the actual startup command when the file edit is ignored.
Do not add a launch parameter merely to compensate for a spelling error in serverDZ.cfg. First make the template and folder names agree. Introduce a command-line override only when your hosting setup or deployment method explicitly requires it, and document the chosen source of truth so later panel changes do not silently switch the map.
Troubleshooting a map that does not change
The old map still loads
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Reopen the file and check that the new value is inside the active
class Missionsblock. - Check for a second
serverDZ.cfgin another server directory. The edit may have been made to a copy the service does not read. - Inspect the launch command for a
-mission=setting or a panel-generated override. - Verify that the template text exactly matches a folder under
mpmissions.
The server fails to start after the edit
- Restore the backup, then reapply only the template change.
- Check that the line has quotation marks and ends with a semicolon:
template = "name";. - Look for accidental edits to braces or other lines in
class Missions. - Confirm that the referenced mission folder and its required files are present.
The server starts but players cannot connect
- For Livonia, confirm the connecting player owns the Livonia DLC.
- For Sakhal, confirm Frostline ownership.
- For a community map, compare the server’s mod list with the client’s installed and loaded mods.
- Check that the client is using the map’s current required version rather than an outdated copy.
The map loads but the world seems empty or reset
Changing templates can select a different persistence state. Do not assume that characters, loot, or structures from the old map will appear on the new one. Stop the server and compare the live directories with your backup before deleting anything. If you need to return to the old world, restore the original template and the corresponding saved data carefully, with the server offline.
How to confirm the change worked
- Read the final saved
templateline and record its value. - Confirm that a directory with that exact name exists in
mpmissions. - Start the server and wait for the startup process to complete instead of connecting immediately during initialization.
- Join with a client that has the required DLC and mods.
- Verify the terrain in-game and check that the expected mission-specific spawn or environment is present.
- Keep the old save backup until you have confirmed that the new map is stable and that you can switch back if necessary.
If these checks disagree—for example, the file says Livonia but the game opens Chernarus+—the service is almost certainly reading another configuration source or overriding the file at launch. Resolve that conflict before changing save data.
Safe map-switch checklist
- Server process stopped.
- Current save backed up.
- Target DLC installed where required.
- Target map mods installed and matched between server and clients.
- Mission folder present under
mpmissions. templatematches the folder name exactly.- Quotation marks and semicolon preserved.
- Correct
serverDZ.cfgedited. - Launch parameters and panel overrides checked.
- Server restarted and the terrain verified in-game.
The essential rule is simple: the map is whatever mission template the running server resolves, and that template must resolve to a real mission folder. Stop first, preserve the old data, use the exact stock or custom name, and account for DLC, mods, and any launch override before inviting players back.
