MaxTamedDinos=9500
Replace 9500 with the cap you want. The key belongs under [ServerSettings], not in a player profile or save-game file. Many installations do not include the line until you add it manually. Shut down the server completely before editing, save the file, then start the server again.
That procedure applies to the original game, commonly called Survival Evolved. It should not be copied to Survival Ascended without checking the version and your host’s documentation. Ascended reports refer to a different key, MaxPersonalTamedDinos, and conflicting file locations.

What the setting does—and what is not established
The setting name and file
MaxTamedDinos is the key used by community server configurations for the overall tamed-dinosaur limit in Survival Evolved. Put it in GameUserSettings.ini beneath the exact section header [ServerSettings]. INI section names and key spelling matter: MaxTamedDinos is not the same as MaxTameDinos or MaxTamedDino.
Community documentation describes this as a server-wide cap. It does not clearly establish whether “server-wide” means all tribes combined, a limit enforced separately per tribe, or another scope in every build and mode. Treat the scope as something to verify in a controlled test rather than promising players that each tribe receives the same number.

These are different games with different configuration behavior. The instructions in this section are for Survival Evolved dedicated servers. Ascended users have reported a personal or per-tribe key named MaxPersonalTamedDinos, but the reported location and effect are inconsistent. A setting copied from an Evolved guide can therefore appear to save while doing nothing.
Before you edit the server
- Confirm the game. Check the server’s product label or startup panel. “ARK: Survival Evolved” and “ARK: Survival Ascended” are not interchangeable for this setting.
- Identify the active configuration. Hosts often expose several files, test instances, or map profiles. Edit the file belonging to the running instance, not an old backup.
- Stop the server cleanly. A live process can overwrite your change when it shuts down, and a running server will not normally reload this setting.
- Back up the file. Make a copy of
GameUserSettings.inibefore changing it. Keep the original until players have connected successfully and the cap has been tested. - Record the existing value. If the key already exists, note its current value and section so you can restore it exactly.
- Plan a test. Choose a value that is easy to recognize and arrange a safe way to observe the limit before advertising the change to the whole community.
Step-by-step: change the limit on Survival Evolved
1. Stop the server
Use the host control panel’s stop or shut-down action, or stop the dedicated-server process through your normal service manager. Wait until the panel reports that the instance is offline. Do not edit while the process is still writing configuration or save data.
2. Open the active GameUserSettings.ini
On a typical Linux dedicated server, the path is:
/ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/GameUserSettings.ini
That is a common community path, not a guarantee that every host uses the same root directory. Windows dedicated servers use a corresponding WindowsServer folder in place of LinuxServer. A control panel may hide the full path and provide an INI editor instead.

3. Find or create the ServerSettings section
Search the file for:
[ServerSettings]
If the section exists, place the key on its own line anywhere within that section. If it is absent, add the section header and key together. Do not put the line above the header, inside another section, or in Game.ini for the Survival Evolved procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Add or edit MaxTamedDinos
Use this format, with a whole number in place of the example:
MaxTamedDinos=9500
The number 9500 is only a community configuration example. It is not an official recommendation or the game’s default. A lower example, 3700, has also appeared in a Steam discussion. Choose a value that matches your server’s design and test it; there is no verified universal “correct” number.
If the line already exists, edit the number rather than creating a second copy. Duplicate keys can make it unclear which value the server or host parser uses. Keep the spelling and capitalization exactly as shown, and save the file as plain text with the .ini extension.
5. Save, close, and start the server
Save the file, close the editor, and start the same server instance you stopped. A restart is required because the setting is loaded during boot. If your host has both a file editor and a separate configuration form, allow the panel to finish saving before starting; some panels regenerate INI files from their own stored values.

6. Confirm that the change survived the restart
After the server is online, stop it again if necessary and reopen the file. Confirm that the line is still under [ServerSettings] and that your number was not removed or replaced. Then connect with a test character and observe the cap using the server’s normal tribe-management or creature-management workflow. The exact in-game presentation can vary by map, mode, and server build, so a successful file save alone is not proof that the limit is active.
Configuration paths and host-panel traps
Linux dedicated servers
The commonly cited Linux location is /ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/GameUserSettings.ini. Some providers expose only a web editor, while others provide FTP, a file manager, or shell access. Whichever method you use, verify that the path belongs to the instance that launches your server and not to a staging copy.
Windows dedicated servers
Windows installations generally use a WindowsServer configuration folder instead of LinuxServer. The important parts are the ShooterGame/Saved/Config hierarchy and the filename GameUserSettings.ini; the drive letter and installation root differ by provider.
Hosted control panels
A panel can override a hand-edited file, especially when a setting is exposed as a form field. If your line disappears after a restart, compare the panel’s saved value with the file, save through the panel, and restart again. Do not keep changing several copies at once: first establish which editor is authoritative for the running instance.

| Figure | How it appears in community material | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 4000 | Listed as a default by a GameWalkthrough Universe guide | One guide’s claim; not an official, verified default |
| 5000 | Cited by other community sources | Reported value without a verifiable primary page in the available material |
| 9500 | Shown in a configuration gist | Example of a custom value, not a default |
| 3700 | Shown in a Steam discussion | Example of a custom value, not a default |
Because those figures describe different guides or configurations, do not write server rules around an assumed default. Inspect the active file, check the in-game result, and document the value you actually run. If the key is absent, absence does not by itself prove whether the engine is using 4000, 5000, another built-in value, or a host-provided override.

The server was never fully restarted
Stopping and starting a control-panel task is not always the same as restarting the game process. Confirm that the process ended and that the new start completed. A live process will continue using the value it loaded at boot.
The line is in the wrong section or file
For Survival Evolved, the community location is GameUserSettings.ini under [ServerSettings]. Check for a typo in the section header, a misspelled key, or an edit to a similarly named file. If the host has multiple maps or instances, compare their directories and startup profile.
The host rewrote your change
Reopen the file after a restart. If the line reverted, use the panel’s own setting field or ask the host which configuration source is authoritative. Editing the generated file repeatedly will not help if the panel regenerates it from a stored template.
A duplicate key is confusing the parser
Search the entire file for MaxTamedDinos. Keep one active line in the [ServerSettings] section and remove accidental duplicates after making a backup. Then restart and verify again.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You are testing the wrong game
Ascended and Evolved can be installed side by side, and a panel may label them similarly. Confirm the executable or product selection before troubleshooting syntax. Ascended’s reports involve MaxPersonalTamedDinos, not the Evolved procedure described here.
The cap appears unchanged despite a correct file
Do not immediately assume the number is ignored. Check whether the observed limit is a tribe, personal, map, mode, or server-wide rule; community documentation does not establish one universal scope for MaxTamedDinos. Test with a controlled tribe setup, keep notes of the value loaded after boot, and ask the host whether another configuration layer imposes a cap.

Survival Ascended: treat the setting as unverified
Reports for Survival Ascended do not agree on a reliable procedure. One Steam thread describes MaxPersonalTamedDinos=250 in GameUserSettings.ini. Another suggests placing the same key in Game.ini under:
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]
Those locations conflict, and neither report establishes an official, version-wide rule. A Nitrado user also reported that a tame limit remained at 100 despite an INI value and a host-panel setting, later saying the change had no effect. These reports mean you should not present 250 as an Ascended default or promise that either file location works on every server.
A cautious Ascended workflow
- Confirm the server is Ascended and note its current game version and host.
- Back up both
GameUserSettings.iniandGame.ini. - Check the host’s current documentation or support response for the active tame-limit key and override behavior.
- Change only one location at a time, using the exact key and section supplied for your build.
- Stop and restart the server, then verify whether the panel rewrote the file.
- Test with the affected tribe or character before treating the change as working.
If the observed limit remains 100 or another unchanged value, report the exact key, file, section, host setting, and restart time to the provider. The available community reports do not provide a dependable universal fix.
Choosing and operating a higher cap
Raising a cap changes the number of creatures your server may need to save, load, replicate, and manage. The available community material does not provide a performance benchmark or a safe maximum. Treat the value as a server-policy decision: increase it in steps, watch startup and save behavior, and keep a rollback copy of the previous configuration.
Quick Recap
- Tell players whether the number is a total server cap or simply the value you are testing; the documented scope is not fully resolved.
- Schedule edits during maintenance so a failed restart does not interrupt an active event.
- Keep backups of both the INI file and the world save before a large policy change.
- Record the date, value, game edition, map, and host panel state whenever you change the setting.
- Recheck the file after host updates, migrations, or map changes because a panel or template may restore its own value.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server and wait for a confirmed offline state.
- Restore the backed-up
GameUserSettings.ini, or replace only theMaxTamedDinosline with the previously documented value. - Save the file and confirm that the line remains under
[ServerSettings]. - Start the server and verify the old cap with a test account.
- If the host rewrites the file, apply the old value through the host panel or request the provider’s assistance.
Practical checklist
- Edition confirmed: Survival Evolved or Survival Ascended.
- Correct active instance and configuration file identified.
- Server stopped before editing.
- Backup created.
- For Evolved,
MaxTamedDinosis under[ServerSettings]inGameUserSettings.ini. - No duplicate key remains.
- File saved as plain-text INI.
- Server restarted after the edit.
- Value survived the restart and was tested in game.
- Host-panel overrides ruled out.
- Scope explained to players without claiming an unverified per-tribe or all-tribes rule.
