To change an Enshrouded dedicated server’s name, stop the server, edit the name value in enshrouded_server.json, save valid JSON, and restart. On a hosted server, check the control panel first: a panel-level Server Name field can override the value in the file.

What actually controls the name
Enshrouded reads the dedicated server name from the name property in enshrouded_server.json. That value is the name displayed to players in the server browser. It is not the same thing as the operating system’s computer name, the folder name, a hosting-account label, or a world/save name.

Every player who can see the server listing can also see its server name. Use a clear, non-offensive label that helps players identify the community or play style. Do not put private information in it, because the browser name is public to people viewing the listing.
Before you edit anything
- Know which environment you are using. A server you administer directly normally exposes the configuration file in its server root folder. A rented server may provide a web file manager, a configuration editor, or a Startup Parameters section instead.
- Have permission to stop and edit the server. You need administrator access to the machine or to the hosting panel.
- Schedule a brief outage. Players will be disconnected while the service is stopped, and the new name will not be read until the next start.
- Make a backup copy. Save the existing
enshrouded_server.jsonbefore changing it. A backup gives you a quick way to restore the previous configuration if a typo or panel setting causes trouble. - Use a plain-text editor or the host’s config editor. Avoid word processors that add formatting or smart quotation marks.
The most important timing rule is that the server must be stopped before the edit. Enshrouded writes settings as it shuts down. If you change the file while the process is still running, the shutdown write can replace your edit with the older in-memory settings.

Change the name in the JSON file
1. Stop the server cleanly
Use your normal service manager, game-server control panel, or hosting-panel Stop command. Wait until the panel reports that the process has fully stopped before opening the file. Do not treat a disconnected console or closed browser tab as proof that the process ended; check the status indicator or console state.
2. Open enshrouded_server.json
On a server you manage yourself, look in the Enshrouded server root folder. On a hosted server, open the panel’s file manager or configuration editor and browse to the server root. The filename is enshrouded_server.json; do not create a second file with a similar name and do not edit a downloaded copy that is not uploaded back to the server.

3. Find the name property
Locate the JSON member named name. Its value is a quoted string. Change only the text between the quotation marks unless you are deliberately editing another documented setting.

4. Keep the JSON syntactically valid
JSON requires straight double quotation marks around property names and text values. Keep the colon after "name", keep the comma that separates this property from the next one when a next property exists, and retain the opening and closing braces. Do not add comments, trailing commas, or unquoted words.

}A host guide reports that invalid syntax can cause the game to silently overwrite the file with defaults. That behavior is based on a single third-party guide rather than a confirmed official statement, but it is a good reason to preserve a backup and validate the punctuation carefully.
5. Save the file in place
Save over the server’s actual enshrouded_server.json. Confirm that the filename and extension did not change, especially if your editor hides known extensions. A file accidentally saved as enshrouded_server.json.txt will not be read as the server configuration.

6. Start the server again
Use the panel or service manager’s Start or Restart action. Allow the process to finish loading before testing the listing. The new name should become visible in the Enshrouded server browser after the service restarts; browser propagation can take a minute or two.
Hosted servers: check the panel before the file
Hosting companies often place a friendly settings form in front of the JSON file. Look for a field labelled Server Name, commonly under a section such as Startup Parameters. Some panels generate or apply startup arguments after reading the file. In that arrangement, the panel value takes precedence over enshrouded_server.json.

If your host offers both controls, avoid alternating between them while troubleshooting. Decide which setting is authoritative, put the same name in both if the panel permits it, save the panel configuration, and then restart. If the panel documentation says its Server Name field overrides the file, changing only the JSON cannot win against that override.
How to verify the change
- After starting the server, confirm the panel shows the process as running rather than merely queued or starting.
- Open Enshrouded’s server browser and search for the exact new name. If the browser supports filters, remove restrictive filters that could hide the server.
- Wait one or two minutes for the listing to refresh. A browser that still shows cached results immediately after startup is not conclusive.
- If the old name remains after that interval, stop the server again and inspect the authoritative setting: either the saved JSON file or the panel’s Server Name field.
- Check the file’s modification time or the panel’s saved-value indicator to make sure your edit was actually committed to the server, not just displayed in an unsaved editor tab.
Troubleshooting a name that does not change
The old name is still listed immediately after restart
Give the server browser a minute or two to update. If the old value remains, perform a full stop followed by a start rather than relying on a panel’s soft reload, then verify that the edited file is the one in the active server root. On a hosted server, inspect the panel’s Server Name field because it may override the file.

The name reverts after you stop the server
The most likely cause is an edit made while the server was still running. Enshrouded can write its current settings during shutdown, replacing the unsaved-in-process change. Stop the process completely, make the edit, save it, and only then start the server.
The file returns to defaults or appears to lose the edit
Check the JSON punctuation and restore your backup if necessary. An invalid document may be replaced by defaults; this behavior is reported by a third-party hosting guide and is not documented here as a guaranteed behavior for every server version. Compare braces, quotation marks, colons, and commas before restarting again.

Treat the panel as the controlling source. Open its Startup Parameters or equivalent configuration page, change the Server Name value there, save the page, and restart. If the panel has an automated configuration generator, edits made directly in the file may be overwritten on the next deployment.
The new name appears in one place but not another
Different interfaces may cache server-list data for a short period. Confirm the running server’s authoritative setting, wait for the browser refresh interval, and search again. Do not repeatedly edit the file while waiting; multiple changes make it harder to identify whether the problem is propagation or configuration precedence.

Safe naming and formatting choices
- Keep the value as a normal JSON string and use straight double quotes.
- Choose a readable name that players can identify in a crowded browser list.
- Avoid offensive wording because the name is visible to all players who can browse the server.
- Do not put passwords, private addresses, administrator contact details, or other sensitive information in the public name.
- Use one spelling consistently in the panel and file when both are available; differences can look like a failed update.
The configuration field controls the browser label only. It does not rename the host computer, alter the server’s network address, change a saved world, or migrate player data.
When an update changes your configuration
The documented procedure is based on the current configuration model in which enshrouded_server.json contains a name field. A third-party guide claims that Update 8, “Forging the Path,” released on April 21, 2026, did not change the schema, but that claim has not been independently verified. After a major game or server update, confirm that the file still contains name and that your host has not introduced a new panel-level setting.
Do not assume a missing field means you should replace the entire configuration with a template from another version. Preserve a backup, make the smallest documented edit, and check the host’s current instructions if the panel regenerates the file.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server and wait for the process to finish.
- Restore the backup copy of
enshrouded_server.json, or change thenamevalue back to its previous text while preserving valid JSON. - If a hosting panel controls the value, restore the previous name in the panel as well.
- Save the configuration, start the server, and wait for the browser listing to refresh.
Rolling back the name does not require restoring the world or other server data; it changes the server-label setting only.
