For a self-hosted dedicated server, add -SteamServerName="Your Server Name" to the server launch command, then restart it. For a rented server, stop the server, edit the panel’s Server Name field, save, and start it again. Do not change SandboxSettings.ini: that file controls gameplay rules, not the browser name.

The correct method depends on how your server is hosted
Abiotic Factor presents the server name to players through the dedicated server’s startup configuration. The practical method is different depending on who controls that configuration:

The name controlled by -SteamServerName is the name players see in the server browser. It is separate from the world or save name. Keep the server stopped before changing a launch command, panel field, or configuration file; a running process can overwrite the change or continue using its old arguments.

Self-hosted dedicated server: change the launch argument
If you run the dedicated server on your own computer or rented machine and start it with a batch file, shell script, shortcut, service, or scheduled task, add the name to that startup command.
1. Stop the dedicated server completely
Close the server gracefully and confirm that its process or service is no longer running. Do not edit the command while the server is still active. If a service manager automatically restarts it, stop or disable that service temporarily so it cannot launch the old command while you are editing.
2. Find the command that actually starts the server
Look for the batch file, shell script, desktop shortcut, service definition, or hosting script used every time the server starts. The important question is not where the game files are installed; it is which command supplies the startup arguments. Editing an unused shortcut will have no effect.
3. Add -SteamServerName
Add the argument in this form:
-SteamServerName="Your Server Name"Keep the quotation marks when the name contains spaces. Replace the example text with the name you want players to see. A simple name without spaces can also be written as an unquoted value, but quoting the value consistently avoids accidental splitting when you later add punctuation or spaces.
Place the argument alongside the other dedicated-server options; it is not a separate command and should not be entered on a new line unless your script’s syntax explicitly supports line continuation. For example, a command that already contains other options should retain those options and gain the new argument:

4. Save the startup file or service definition
Save the edited batch file, script, shortcut target, or service configuration. Check that the argument appears exactly once in the command you intend to run. If several launch layers are involved, such as a service that calls a script, edit the layer that supplies the final command line.

Start the dedicated server again and wait until it is ready to accept connections. Search for it from the server browser and confirm that the new text is displayed. The launch argument controls the browser name and overrides a name stored in GameUserSettings.ini, so changing that file alone is not a reliable way to replace a value supplied at startup.
Hosted server: use the provider’s panel
With a managed game-server host, the provider normally generates the startup command from fields in its control panel. Edit the panel rather than attempting to modify files over FTP or a file manager.
BisectHosting
- Stop the Abiotic Factor server from the control panel and wait for the status to show that it is offline.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Find the Server Name field and replace its current value.
- Save the change.
- Start the server and check the server browser after it has finished loading.
The panel’s saved startup value is the authoritative setting for this workflow. A manual edit made while the server is running, or an edit to a generated file, may be lost the next time the panel starts the server.

Citadel Servers
- Stop the server and wait until it is fully offline.
- Open Commandline Manager.
- Choose Active Modify.
- Change the Server Name value.
- Save the command-line change, start the server, and verify the listing in the browser.
Panel labels can change as providers update their interfaces. If the wording differs, look for the control that edits the active command line or a field explicitly labelled Server Name. Do not use a generic gameplay-configuration editor for this particular change.
Other hosts
Most panels follow the same sequence even when the menu names differ: stop the server, open the startup or command-line configuration, edit Server Name, save, and restart. If the panel has both a configuration-file editor and a startup editor, use the startup editor first because the launch argument is the consistently documented setting. If the provider’s panel has no such field, ask its support team where it stores the active startup arguments rather than guessing at an INI key.
Which files matter—and which one does not
SandboxSettings.ini is not the server-name file
SandboxSettings.ini contains gameplay rules. Its documented location is:
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<WorldName>/SandboxSettings.iniIt must begin with the [SandboxSettings] section header when edited as a gameplay-settings file. Back it up before making any gameplay change, but do not add a server-name value there. Changing this file will not set the name shown in the server browser.
ServerSettings.ini has no confirmed name key for this task
Some third-party configuration lists show a ServerName entry in ServerSettings.ini, but that entry has not been confirmed against an official dedicated-server reference. A hosting panel may expose server settings through a configuration-files section without that proving that a particular name key is valid. Treat the launch argument as the dependable method instead of relying on an unverified INI field.

Do not rely on generic config.ini instructions
Instructions that suggest a generic ServerName= line in config.ini, or that point to a different configuration directory, are not a safe substitute for the active startup argument. Paths and generated files can differ by installation and host, and a panel may overwrite them. If you cannot identify the active launch command, stop and confirm the provider’s current procedure.
Do not confuse the display name with other launch options
Dedicated-server commands commonly contain several unrelated options. Keep them intact while adding the name:

Leaving -WorldSaveName unchanged is especially important when you only want a new public label. The available documentation does not establish that changing the display name renames, moves, or duplicates an existing world save, so do not alter the save argument as part of a cosmetic rename.
How to choose a safe name
Use a short, recognizable label that tells players which community or play session they are joining. Spaces are allowed when the value is quoted. Avoid changing unrelated launch settings at the same time; isolating the rename makes it easier to identify a syntax problem if the server fails to start.
- Put the complete value inside quotation marks when it contains spaces.
- Check capitalization and punctuation after the restart; the browser may display the value exactly as supplied.
- Do not put the name in the world-folder path or rename the world directory just to change the browser listing.
- Keep a copy of the original command or panel value before editing.
Troubleshooting when the old name remains
The server still shows the previous name
- Confirm that the server was fully stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Verify that you changed the command or panel instance that actually launches this server, not an unused shortcut or template.
- Check the command for a correctly spelled
-SteamServerNameargument and matching quotation marks. - Look for a second startup layer, such as a service or panel, that may still be supplying the old argument.
- Wait for the server to finish starting, then refresh the server-browser results rather than relying on a cached listing.
Because the launch argument overrides a value in GameUserSettings.ini, editing that file will not fix an old name when the startup command still contains the previous value.

The panel change disappears after a restart
Stop the server, make the change in the panel’s active startup or command-line editor, save it, and start from that same panel. A direct file edit can be overwritten by the host’s generated startup configuration. If the saved field reverts immediately, contact the host because the panel may be applying a template or restricting that setting.
The server will not start after editing
Restore the original command, then add only -SteamServerName="Your Server Name". Check for a missing quote, an accidental line break, or a typographical change to an existing option. Do not troubleshoot by editing SandboxSettings.ini; it is unrelated to the launch argument and changing it can introduce a separate gameplay-configuration problem.
You cannot find a name field
Search the panel’s startup, command-line, or launch-parameter area rather than its sandbox or gameplay settings. Menu labels are host-specific and can change. If no active command-line control exists, ask the host where the current dedicated-server arguments are generated; do not assume that an unverified ServerName= INI line will be read.

- Record the current launch command or panel value.
- Stop the server and confirm it is offline.
- For self-hosting, edit the command that actually starts the dedicated server.
- For a hosted server, use the active startup or command-line editor.
- Add or replace
-SteamServerName="..."and preserve unrelated options. - Do not edit
SandboxSettings.inifor this purpose. - Save the change, restart, and verify the browser listing.
- If the name reverts, investigate panel or service-generated startup arguments before changing files elsewhere.
What is not established
The consistently identified setting is the -SteamServerName launch argument. A universally valid ServerName key in ServerSettings.ini has not been established, and the effect of renaming a server on existing saves has not been documented here. For that reason, treat the operation as a display-name change: leave the world-save setting alone, back up before editing, and verify the result after a clean restart.
