Set FirstTimeStartingWeapon in SandboxSettings.ini, or use the same field in your host’s Sandbox Settings panel. The documented values are 0–6: 0 gives no weapon, 1–5 select a specific starter, and 6 chooses randomly. Stop the server before changing the setting, then restart it. The weapon is assigned when a player joins for the first time, so an edit may not alter characters who have already spawned—and existing-world behavior is not consistent across hosting setups.

What the setting controls
FirstTimeStartingWeapon is a sandbox option for an Abiotic Factor dedicated server. It controls the weapon selected for a player’s first join, rather than granting a replacement after every death. The option is stored in SandboxSettings.ini when that file-based configuration is used.

Some providers document only 0–5 and omit Random. Treat 6 as build- and host-dependent: if the panel rejects it or the server falls back to another value, use a supported value or test the setting on a disposable world before changing a live one.
Before you edit the server
- Stop the server completely. Editing while it is running can be overwritten when the process saves or shuts down.
- Make a backup. Copy the relevant world folder and any existing configuration file before changing a number.
- Identify the world name. The manual path includes the save’s exact folder name, including capitalization and spaces.
- Decide whether this is a new-world setup or an existing world. Sources disagree about whether changing the file after world creation updates an already-established save.
- Check which configuration method your host supports. Some panels expose the option directly; others expect a file in the world directory or a launch-parameter override.
Method 1: change it in the hosting panel
This is the simplest route when your provider exposes the setting. The exact labels vary, but the documented workflow is the same.
- Stop the Abiotic Factor server from the host control panel and wait until its status shows that it is offline.
- Open the server’s Sandbox Settings tab or section.
- Find First Time Starting Weapon. The label may use spaces and title case even though the file key is
FirstTimeStartingWeapon. - Enter the numeric value from the table: 0 for none, 1–5 for a fixed weapon, or 6 for random if your host and build accept it.
- Save or apply the setting.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading before a player joins.
- Have a test account or a player who has never joined that world connect for the first time. Existing characters may retain their original starting equipment because the option is evaluated at first join.
If the field is missing, the panel probably does not expose this option for your server type. Use the file method instead, or ask the provider where its sandbox configuration is stored. Do not create a second, conflicting value in a panel and a file unless the provider documents which one takes precedence.

Method 2: edit SandboxSettings.ini manually
When a provider gives direct file access, the commonly documented world route is:
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<Your Save Name>Replace <Your Save Name> with the actual folder for the world you want to change. The filename is case-sensitive on some systems and must be exactly SandboxSettings.ini.
- Stop the server and confirm that it is no longer running.
- Open the file manager, FTP/SFTP client, or web file editor supplied by your host.
- Navigate to
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<Your Save Name>. - Download or copy the existing
SandboxSettings.inias a backup. If no file exists, check the existing-world section below before creating one. - Open the file as plain text. The first section must be the exact header
[SandboxSettings]; without that header, the game may ignore the settings. - Add or replace the setting under that header:
[SandboxSettings]
FirstTimeStartingWeapon=4The example selects the Starter Baton. Substitute 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, or 6 as needed. Keep one active line for the key; duplicate entries make it unclear which value the loader will use.

- Save the file without changing its
.iniextension. Avoid saving it asSandboxSettings.ini.txt. - Start the server and watch the startup log or panel status for an error.
- Test with a player making a first connection to that world. Do not use a character that already joined if you are trying to verify the initial-spawn behavior.
Existing worlds: why an edit may appear to do nothing
There is no single, consistently documented behavior for changing this option on a world that already exists. Some host instructions assume that SandboxSettings.ini is present in the world folder and can be edited. Another hosting guide reports that sandbox settings are written when the world is created and stored in the save data, with no automatically generated SandboxSettings.ini. That guide recommends putting a file in the server root and supplying the launch parameter -SandboxIniPath so the server knows where to read it.
Because those procedures conflict, use this decision path:
- New world: set the value in the panel or file before the first player joins. This is the least ambiguous test.
- Existing world with a working world-folder file: stop the server, back up the save, edit the value, restart, and test with a genuinely new player profile. If the result does not change, the save may already contain the original setting.
- Existing world without the file: do not assume that creating a file in an arbitrary directory will work. Ask the host whether it expects a root-level file and the
-SandboxIniPathlaunch argument, and follow that host’s exact path syntax. - Still unchanged: create a temporary test world with the same value. If the new world works, the issue is likely the existing save’s stored settings rather than the numeric value.
Do not delete or overwrite the world to force a change until you have a verified backup. A new-world test is safer than experimenting on the only copy of a shared server.

How to verify the result
Verification must match the setting’s timing. The option supplies a weapon on a player’s first join; it is not a respawn rule. A death-and-respawn cycle therefore is not a valid test for whether the initial value was applied.
- Stop the server before every configuration change.
- Confirm the file contains one
FirstTimeStartingWeaponline under[SandboxSettings], or confirm the panel shows the intended number. - Restart and wait for the server to report that the world is ready.
- Use a player who has never joined that world, or use a fresh test world and fresh player profile.
- Record the item received and compare it with the value table. For value 6, repeat with additional first-time players if you are checking that random selection is functioning; a single result cannot establish a distribution.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server ignores the file
- Check that the filename is exactly
SandboxSettings.ini, not a text-document variant. - Confirm the file is in the provider’s expected directory: normally the world folder shown above, or the root path specified for
-SandboxIniPath. - Make sure
[SandboxSettings]appears as a section header, with no extra punctuation. - Check that the key is spelled
FirstTimeStartingWeaponand that the value is an unquoted number. - Verify that the host panel is not regenerating the file from its own saved settings at startup.
The panel will not accept 6
Some provider documentation lists only 0–5, while other guides include 6 for Random. Use the values the panel offers. If Random is important to your server, test a manual value of 6 on a temporary world only after confirming that your game build accepts it.
The player still receives the old weapon
- Ensure the player truly had no previous join record for that world.
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check whether the world stores sandbox settings at creation and therefore ignores later changes.
- Test the same value on a new world to separate a configuration problem from an existing-save limitation.
The file keeps reverting
Download it after a restart and compare it with your backup. A control panel, startup script, or world-save process may be rewriting the file. In that case, use the panel’s field or the provider’s documented launch-parameter method instead of repeatedly editing a generated file.

The server fails to load after the change
Restore the backup immediately, then restart. The usual safe rollback is to return to the previous numeric value or remove only the newly added line while preserving the rest of the configuration. Test one change at a time so a malformed section or unsupported value can be identified.
Important limits and related equipment
Do not assume a default
One hosting guide describes the default as None, but that default is not independently confirmed across the available documentation. If the starting item matters to your server rules, set an explicit value rather than relying on an assumed default.
Job equipment may be separate
A guide claims that the Defense Analyst job begins with a Basic Baton. That is a job-loadout statement, not a documented value in FirstTimeStartingWeapon, and it has not been independently confirmed. Treat job equipment and the sandbox starting-weapon option as separate systems when troubleshooting a player’s inventory.
Platform and server-version claims are unsettled
Host pages disagree about whether the dedicated server is officially Windows-only or can be run on Linux through Wine. They also cite conflicting Steam App IDs, including 2857200 and 427410. Neither issue changes the configuration key, but it means you should follow the instructions for your exact server package and build rather than copying an App ID or platform assumption from a generic guide. No available source confirms that this setting’s behavior is unchanged in every 2026 build, so test after a major update.
Recommended setup for a shared server
For a new cooperative world, choose the weapon before anyone joins, record the selected number in your server notes, and keep a backup of the configuration. Fixed values make the opening consistent for every first-time player; Random adds variation but depends on your build accepting value 6. For an established world, preserve the save, test the change on a copy or temporary world, and use the host’s documented method if the world-folder file is not honored.
The practical sequence is therefore: stop the server, set FirstTimeStartingWeapon through the panel or the correctly located SandboxSettings.ini, restart, and verify with a first-time join. If that test fails on an existing world, treat the save’s creation-time settings as the likely constraint and consult the host’s -SandboxIniPath procedure before making destructive changes.
