Change the server’s display name in the game.name property of its config.json, then validate the JSON and restart the server. The name is the text players see in the Arma Reforger server browser. Editing another identifier, or changing a file that the server is not actually loading, will not rename the listing.

For a dedicated server using the current nested configuration format, the display name is a string named name inside the game object. In other words, the path is game.name, not a top-level name property. The official Bohemia Interactive community wiki’s Server Config documentation places this setting alongside options such as password, passwordAdmin, scenarioId, maxPlayers and visible.
JSON property names are case-sensitive. name works; Name, NAME and a misspelled key do not address the documented setting. The value must be quoted as a JSON string.

A practical naming pattern shown in Bohemia Interactive’s examples is Server Name - Mission Name. You can use any clear label that fits your community, provided it remains valid JSON and complies with the rules of the server version you run.
Before you edit: identify the configuration the server actually loads
A rename only takes effect when you modify the configuration file supplied to the running server. Dedicated-server launch commands commonly specify the file with a -config argument. If several copies of config.json exist, the one in the installation directory is not necessarily the active one.

- Look for the
-configlaunch option and note its complete path. - Open that exact file, rather than editing an unrelated template, backup or old installation.
- If no explicit path is present, determine which configuration your server version uses before making a change. Keep a backup of the file you intend to edit.
Stop the server before editing when possible. This prevents a running process or management script from overwriting your change and gives you a clean restart with the new value.
Dedicated server: change game.name in config.json
1. Make a backup
Copy the active config.json to a separate location before editing. A backup gives you a recovery point if a typo makes the file unreadable or if you need to compare the previous settings.
2. Open the file as plain text
Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Do not edit the file in a word processor. JSON is plain text, and invisible formatting or automatically substituted quotation marks can invalidate it.

3. Locate the game object
Scroll to the object containing the game settings. The relevant portion has this general shape:

}Your file will contain additional properties, and the numeric limit, scenario value and other settings may differ. Do not replace the entire file just to change the name. Edit only the string after "name".
4. Replace the value, not the key
For example, change:
"name": "My Arma Reforger Server"to:
"name": "North Ridge - Conflict"Keep the double quotes around both the property name and its value. If the name contains a double quote, escape it as " or choose wording that does not require one. A backslash, line break or other special character must also be represented using valid JSON escaping.
5. Preserve commas and braces
If another property follows name, retain the comma after the name value. If name is the final property in the object, do not add a trailing comma. JSON does not permit comments, unlike some configuration formats. A commented-out line such as // "name": "..." is invalid, and a comma immediately before a closing brace is invalid as well.
6. Validate the JSON before starting
Use a JSON-aware validator or Python’s standard-library checker. From a command prompt or terminal, run:

python -m json.tool config.jsonReplace config.json with the path to the active file if you are not working in its directory. A successful run prints formatted JSON. A syntax error identifies a location to inspect; common causes are a missing quote, a missing comma between properties, a trailing comma, a comment or an extra brace.
Validation confirms that the document is syntactically valid. It does not prove that the server is reading this particular file, that the key is in the expected location, or that the name meets any server-side length or character policy. Check those separately.
7. Restart with the same configuration path
Start the server using the command or service definition that points to the edited file with -config. A restart is the reliable way to make the server read the new display name; do not assume a running instance reloads a changed JSON file. If a hosting panel generates its own command, verify that panel is not writing a different configuration over your edit.
8. Confirm the result in the browser
Open the Multiplayer server browser and search for the new name. Allow for the browser’s normal refresh or filtering behavior: clear an old name from the search field, refresh the list and make sure filters such as region, scenario, visibility or password status are not hiding the server. Check the server’s details to ensure you found the instance launched from the edited configuration.

Changing the name through in-game hosting
If you create a host from Arma Reforger’s in-game flow rather than running a separately managed dedicated process, the official Boot Camp instructions place the server name on the hosting screen’s Settings tab.

- Open the game’s multiplayer hosting flow.
- Navigate to the Settings tab.
- Enter the desired server name in the name field.
- Review the other host settings and start the session.
- On the Multiplayer page, search for the exact name to confirm that the listing appears.
This menu path is separate from manually editing a dedicated server’s JSON. Changing a dedicated file will not rename a session that is being created from the in-game form, and changing the in-game field does not necessarily rewrite a dedicated server’s persistent configuration.

Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure mode, so changing several settings at once can make the cause harder to identify.

Check that you edited the active instance
Multiple installations are common after updates, test servers or migrations. Compare the path in the launch command with the file you opened. If a service manager starts the server, inspect its service or startup definition rather than relying on a desktop shortcut. A correct edit in an inactive copy produces no visible change.

Check capitalization and nesting
The documented current layout is nested: game contains name. A top-level entry such as "name": "..." may be syntactically valid JSON but still be ignored by the server. Likewise, "Name" is a different key from "name".
Check for an overwrite on startup
Some launchers, control panels or deployment scripts generate config.json each time they start. If your manual edit disappears after a restart, stop the generator, update the template it uses or change the value through that panel. Keep the generated file valid and verify the final file before launching.

Account for browser state
The server browser may retain a previous result while it refreshes. Search for the new text after restarting, remove the old search term and wait for the listing to repopulate. Verify the server’s details rather than assuming a similarly named instance is yours.
Older configuration layouts
Older community guides show a flatter arrangement with keys such as gameHostBindAddress and adminPassword. That layout does not match the nested game.name structure documented for the current format. Do not blindly paste a modern example into an older file, or flatten a current file because an old guide does so.
First identify the server version and the schema it accepts. If the installation ships a sample configuration, compare its structure with the file being loaded. When the formats differ, follow the documentation for that version or test a copy locally. The important principle remains the same: change the field that that version defines as its public server name, validate the complete document and restart with the intended configuration.
Name length, characters and naming conventions
The official excerpts documenting game.name do not state a maximum length. One third-party guide claims a range of 0–100 characters, but that limit is not established in the official material available here. Treat it as a working hint rather than a guaranteed rule, and verify acceptance on the server version you operate before designing a naming policy around it.
Short names are easier to find in a crowded browser. Put the community or shard identifier first, then an optional mission or event label, for example North Ridge - Conflict. Avoid decorative characters that are difficult to type into a search field, and test punctuation that your administration tools or log parsers might handle poorly. These are operational recommendations, not a published character whitelist.
- Keep the name descriptive enough for players to distinguish it from other instances.
- Use consistent separators, such as a hyphen, if you include a mission name.
- Do not rely on capitalization alone to distinguish two servers; browser searches and player memory vary.
- After choosing a convention, document it for anyone who edits the configuration.
A safe rename checklist
- Identify the exact configuration path used at launch.
- Stop the dedicated server or close the in-game hosting session.
- Back up the active
config.json. - Find
"game"and edit its"name"string. - Keep quotes, commas, braces and escaping valid; remove comments and trailing commas.
- Run
python -m json.toolor another strict JSON validator. - Restart using the same
-configpath. - Refresh Multiplayer and search for the new name.
- If it is unchanged, recheck nesting, capitalization, startup overwrites and older-format differences.
For an in-game host, use the hosting flow’s Settings tab instead of editing a dedicated-server file, then find the session by name on the Multiplayer page.
