To change the osu! main-menu background, open the game and drag a PNG or JPG image onto the main-menu window. osu! replaces the background image in the selected skin. You need osu!supporter to see a custom main-menu background, and seasonal backgrounds can override it.
Change the background by dragging in an image
- Open osu! and go to the main menu.
- Drag a PNG or JPG image from your computer onto the game window. The image replaces the menu background in the currently selected skin. See the osu! Skinning FAQ.
The FAQ says osu!supporter is required to see a custom image in the main menu. Without it, changing the image will not make a custom background visible.
Replace the skin image manually
If you want to edit the skin file directly, replace the menu-background image in the folder for the skin currently selected in osu!. The documented filename is menu-background.jpg. The osu! interface-skinning documentation lists this element and explains how it is displayed.
- Use the exact filename
menu-background.jpg. - If your source image is PNG, convert it to JPG before saving it under that filename; changing the extension alone does not convert the image format.
- Skins can be imported as
.oskfiles or installed in the game’sSkinsfolder. Make sure you edit the skin you are actually using; the osu! skinning guide explains skins and installation.
Choose the right image dimensions
The menu background is centered and scaled to cover the game window while preserving its aspect ratio. That means parts of the image may be cropped, especially when its proportions differ from the game window. The osu! wiki suggests 1366×768 as a standard-definition image size; it is a recommendation, not a requirement. Keep important subjects away from the edges so they are less likely to be cut off.

Fix a background that does not appear
Check Seasonal backgrounds
Seasonal backgrounds can take precedence over the image in your skin. Open Options and search for Seasonal backgrounds. Set it to Never if you want to avoid seasonal images and use your skin’s background instead. The osu! options documentation describes the choices: Sometimes shows seasonal images during selected periods, Never disables them, and Always shows the current seasonal set.
Confirm the selected skin and filename
If the custom image still is not visible, verify that you changed the skin currently selected in osu! and that the file is named menu-background.jpg in JPG format. Also check that you have osu!supporter, which is required to see a custom main-menu background.
