In Word for Windows, change the recovery interval at File > Options > Save: enable Save AutoRecover information every x minutes, enter the number of minutes, and select OK. On a Mac, use Word > Preferences > Save and edit Save AutoRecover info. The setting controls how often Word writes a temporary recovery copy after a crash or unexpected shutdown; it does not replace a normal save.

Microsoft lists 10 minutes as the usual default. Choosing 5 or 10 minutes reduces the amount of work that could disappear after a failure, while 20 minutes can reduce save activity slightly. Microsoft 365 AutoSave is a different feature that continuously saves eligible cloud files, so changing AutoRecover remains useful even when AutoSave is enabled or unavailable.

How do I change the AutoRecover time in Word for Windows?

Use Word’s Save options. The interval applies to recovery information, not to the document’s ordinary saved version.

  1. Open Word and select File.
  2. Select Options to open Word Options.
  3. Choose Save in the left column.
  4. Check Save AutoRecover information every x minutes.
  5. Enter the interval you want, such as 5, 10, or 20.
  6. Select OK to apply the change.

The same page contains Keep the last autorecovered version if I close without saving. Leave that option selected if you want Word to preserve a recovery copy when you close a document without using Save. It is separate from the frequency field: the interval controls how often recovery data is written, while the retention checkbox controls whether the last copy is kept after an unsaved close.

What happens after you change the number?

Word uses the new interval for subsequent AutoRecover writes. It does not retroactively create recovery points for work completed before the setting was changed, and it does not force a full ordinary save to the file’s current location. Press Ctrl+S whenever you reach a meaningful checkpoint or before closing.

How do I change AutoRecover frequency in Word for Mac?

Word for macOS places the control in Preferences rather than Word Options.

  1. With Word active, open the Word menu in the macOS menu bar.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Open Save.
  4. Find Save AutoRecover info and enter the desired frequency.
  5. Close the Preferences window; Word retains the new value.

The wording and layout can vary slightly between Office for Mac releases, but the setting remains under Word’s Save preferences. If the field is unavailable or does not retain a value, update Office and check whether an administrator policy is controlling save settings.

Can I change the setting in PowerPoint or Excel?

PowerPoint provides a numeric AutoRecover interval on both supported desktop platforms. Excel for Mac is the exception: Microsoft says it automatically optimizes the interval instead of exposing a minutes field.

Application and platform Menu path Interval control
Word for Windows File > Options > Save Enter minutes in “Save AutoRecover information every x minutes”
PowerPoint for Windows File > Options > Save Enter minutes in the AutoRecover interval field
Word for Mac Word > Preferences > Save Enter a frequency under “Save AutoRecover info”
PowerPoint for Mac PowerPoint > Preferences > Save Enter a frequency under the Save preferences
Excel for Mac Excel’s Save preferences Excel optimizes AutoRecover automatically; no numeric interval is exposed

PowerPoint’s Windows default is documented as 10 minutes, matching the general Office recovery guidance. The setting is application-specific, so changing Word’s value does not automatically change PowerPoint’s or Excel’s behavior.

How often should Word save AutoRecover information?

For most people, 5 or 10 minutes is a sensible choice. Microsoft identifies 10 minutes as the default and recommends a small value such as 5 or 10 minutes when reducing potential lost work is more important than minimizing background save activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Interval When it fits Trade-off
5 minutes Long writing sessions, unstable power, or work that is difficult to recreate More frequent recovery writes and slightly more background activity
10 minutes General-purpose Word use and Microsoft’s documented default Balances recovery coverage with normal performance
20 minutes Large documents or systems where reducing save activity is a priority A crash can leave up to a longer period of recent work outside the latest recovery copy

The interval is not a guarantee that exactly that many minutes of work will be recoverable. Word may write at the scheduled time only when the document is active and conditions allow it; a crash immediately before a write can still lose the newest edits. A shorter setting narrows that exposure but cannot eliminate it.

Does a shorter interval slow Word down?

Each recovery write creates some disk and processing activity. Microsoft describes 20 minutes as a performance-oriented example and 5 or 10 minutes as the safer choice when protecting recent work matters more. On a modern system the difference is usually less important than the size and complexity of the document, but very large files or slow storage can make frequent writes more noticeable.

What is the difference between AutoRecover and AutoSave?

AutoRecover is a crash-protection mechanism; AutoSave is continuous saving for eligible Microsoft 365 files stored in supported cloud locations. They protect against different failure modes and can operate independently.

Feature Primary purpose Where it works What to expect
AutoRecover Provide a recovery copy after a crash, power failure, or unexpected shutdown Desktop Office applications with AutoRecover enabled Writes recovery information at the configured interval; the newest edits may be absent
AutoSave Continuously save changes while you work Eligible Microsoft 365 files on OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online May be unavailable for local files, older formats, or files affected by compatibility conditions

Turning AutoSave off does not necessarily turn AutoRecover off. Conversely, enabling AutoSave does not make AutoRecover irrelevant: a local file, an older format, or a compatibility condition can leave AutoSave unavailable while AutoRecover still supplies a crash-recovery copy.

Why does AutoSave appear dimmed or missing?

Check where the file is stored and which format it uses. AutoSave is designed for supported cloud locations, so a file saved only to the computer, an older document format, or a document affected by compatibility restrictions may not qualify. In those cases, keep AutoRecover enabled and save manually to create a durable file version.

What should I do after Word crashes?

Reopen Word as soon as the application or computer is stable. Word may show the Document Recovery pane with one or more recovered copies.

  1. Open the recovered document whose time stamp is closest to the crash.
  2. Compare its last paragraphs, edits, and formatting with the version you last saved.
  3. Use Save As to create a normal file in a known folder before continuing to edit.
  4. Only after saving a verified copy should you dismiss or remove the recovered entry.

If no pane appears, use File > Open and inspect the recovery locations shown in Word’s Save options. Recovery files are temporary; they are not a substitute for maintaining a normal saved copy with a clear file name and location.

Where does Word keep AutoRecover files?

On Windows, the application displays its current AutoRecover file location in File > Options > Save. Use that displayed path rather than assuming every Office application or version uses the same folder. PowerPoint’s documented Windows default is C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftPowerPoint, but the in-app path is the authoritative one for the installation you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On macOS, AutoRecovery folders are hidden. When you need to inspect them, use Finder’s Go > Go to Folder command and enter the Word container path documented for your Office installation. Copy recovered content to a normal document immediately; do not edit the hidden temporary file as your only copy.

Why can’t I find a recovery file?

  • The application may have closed normally and removed temporary recovery data.
  • The crash may have occurred before the first scheduled AutoRecover write.
  • The file may have been opened from a different Office application or user account with its own recovery location.
  • A cleanup utility, profile reset, or administrator policy may have removed temporary files.

Check the application’s displayed location, search for recently modified recovery documents, and verify that the document was open long enough for an AutoRecover write. If the file was stored in a cloud service with AutoSave enabled, check the service’s version history as a separate recovery route.

Can I change the interval with Word VBA?

Word exposes the same setting through the Options.SaveInterval property. A value is expressed in minutes, so this macro sets a five-minute interval:

Sub SetFiveMinuteAutoRecover()
    Options.SaveInterval = 5
End Sub

To disable AutoRecover information saving through VBA, Microsoft documents Options.SaveInterval = 0:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Sub DisableAutoRecover()
    Options.SaveInterval = 0
End Sub

Disabling the setting removes a major crash-recovery safeguard. If you run a macro that changes it for testing or administration, restore a positive value afterward and verify the checkbox in Word’s Save options. Macro execution can also be restricted by security policy, so the menu setting is the dependable fallback.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What are the most common problems after changing the setting?

The value keeps reverting

Close Word completely after selecting OK, reopen it, and verify the field. If it reverted, an organization policy, shared configuration, or management tool may be enforcing a value. On a managed computer, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly editing the preference.

Word still loses the newest edits

AutoRecover only contains data from its most recent successful write. Save manually before major changes, file conversions, or closing the application, and choose a shorter interval if the work is difficult to reproduce. Check that the recovery checkbox is enabled and that the displayed AutoRecover location is writable.

The recovered copy opens with a warning

Use Word’s recovery or Open-and-Repair workflow, then save the recovered content under a new name. Keep the original file untouched until you have confirmed that the recovered copy contains the required text and formatting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What setup gives the strongest practical protection?

  • Set Word’s AutoRecover interval to 5 or 10 minutes.
  • Keep Keep the last autorecovered version if I close without saving enabled when you want a retained recovery copy.
  • Use Ctrl+S or Command+S at deliberate checkpoints instead of relying only on the timer.
  • Store eligible Microsoft 365 documents in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online when continuous AutoSave is appropriate.
  • Use meaningful file names and separate versions before large revisions or format conversions.
  • After an incident, save the recovered copy to a normal location and verify it before deleting temporary files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AutoRecover save a document if I never saved it once?

It can create recovery information for an unsaved document, but recovery is not guaranteed if the failure happens before the first AutoRecover write. As soon as the document contains work you care about, use Save or Save As to create a normal file.

Can I set different AutoRecover intervals for different Word documents?

The interval is an application-level Word option, not a per-document setting. Changing it affects later recovery writes for Word generally, while separate documents can still have different AutoSave eligibility when stored in different locations.

Will changing AutoRecover alter Word’s normal Save command?

No. The setting changes the schedule for temporary recovery information only. It does not change where Ctrl+S or Command+S writes the document, how file names are chosen, or whether a document is marked as saved.

Is AutoRecover available when Word is running in Safe Mode?

Safe Mode loads Word with limited features and can change how add-ins and preferences behave. If recovery settings appear inconsistent there, restart Word normally, verify the Save options, and test with a copy of the document.
