What changing the server version actually does
A vanilla server is distributed as a versioned dedicated-server package. Updating does not convert the world into a new format by itself; you replace the server files while pointing the new installation at the same world. The safest workflow is therefore a staged replacement rather than copying new files over the only working installation.

This guide covers the vanilla dedicated server. tModLoader follows a separate release track: it was reported at version 1.4.4 while vanilla had moved to 1.4.5, so a modded server should not be moved to a vanilla 1.4.5 package. Use the tModLoader documentation and release that your mods support instead.
Check the target build before you download anything
Verify the current vanilla server package
The Official Terraria Wiki currently lists Terraria Server 1.4.5.8 at the top of its vanilla-server downloads. The package filename shown for that build is terraria-server-1458.zip. The number in the filename is the build number, so a later release is expected to use a different number. Because the official download page changes, confirm the current build on Terraria.org immediately before updating rather than relying on an old filename.

The Terraria.org download page was not independently checked for this article, so treat 1.4.5.8 as the currently listed reference, not a permanent value. If Terraria.org shows a newer dedicated-server package, use that package and its exact filename.
Check client and server compatibility
Players must be able to connect with the client release supported by the server build you install. The safest practice is to update the server only when the players’ clients are on the corresponding release, and to have everyone close the game and update before testing.
One circulating note says a 1.4.5.8 server can serve 1.4.5.7 clients, but the origin of that statement was not identified. Do not treat that exception as established compatibility. If your client and server numbers differ, check the current Terraria release information and test with a disposable maintenance window before announcing the server as available.
Choose an update method

If you need a precisely timed maintenance window, manual installation is the more predictable option. A panel is convenient when it clearly exposes the target version and documents how it handles worlds, configuration and rollback.

Prepare a safe maintenance window
Tell players what will happen
Announce the stop time, expected downtime and target release. Ask players to finish in a safe location and leave the server before the shutdown. A version change is not a reason to terminate a process while it is still writing the world.
Save and stop the running server
- Use the server’s normal save command or administrative save procedure.
- Wait for the save to complete and announce that the world is closing.
- Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly. Do not replace files while the executable is running.
Back up the two items that matter most
- World files: copy every world used by this server to storage outside the installation directory.
serverconfig.txt: preserve the file that contains the server’s startup settings.- Existing server files: keep the complete old server folder until the new installation has accepted the world and a client has connected successfully.
Give each backup a clear date and version label. A backup that remains inside the folder you are about to replace is not a useful rollback copy.
Manual update: install a new vanilla version
1. Download the matching dedicated-server package
Open the current dedicated-server download on Terraria.org and select the package for the operating system that will run the server. For the 1.4.5.8 package listed by the Official Terraria Wiki, the archive name is terraria-server-1458.zip. Download the archive completely before extracting it; do not use a client game download as a substitute for the dedicated-server package.
On Linux, the wiki provides a download command for that archive. Since package URLs and build numbers change, copy the command shown on the current wiki page or use the current Terraria.org link instead of reusing an old command with a stale build number.

2. Extract into a new version folder
Create a separate directory named for the target build, such as server-1.4.5.8, and extract the archive there. Do not overwrite the existing server directory. A side-by-side layout makes it obvious which executable is running and lets you return to the old build without reconstructing it.
Keep the backed-up serverconfig.txt available. Copy it into the new installation only after checking that the new folder is the one you intend to start. Preserve the original backup even if the new server appears to work.

3. Start the new server against the existing world
- Launch the dedicated-server executable from the new version folder using the same startup method your old installation used.
- Select or specify the existing world rather than creating a new world.
- Use the preserved
serverconfig.txtsettings, reviewing them first so an obsolete path or accidental world choice does not redirect the server. - Watch the startup output for a successful world load and a listening server. If the process exits or loads a blank world, stop and correct the path before allowing players in.
The world should be treated as the same shared save; the important test is that the new server can open it and expose the expected settings.
4. Test with a client before reopening publicly
- Connect from a client running the intended Terraria release.
- Confirm the expected character can join and that the familiar world, buildings and inventory are present.
- Check a few ordinary actions, then save and disconnect cleanly.
- Ask a second player to connect if the server normally has more than one simultaneous user.
Only after these checks pass should you announce that the maintenance is complete. Leave the old folder and the dated backups untouched until you have run the server through a normal play session.

How to change versions through a hosting panel
Before selecting Update or Reinstall
Panel controls are not standardized. Some providers offer an automatic-update setting; others expose a reinstall action that may preserve saves and mods. Those behaviors vary by provider and were not verified against a specific panel, so read the panel’s current explanation and make your own world and serverconfig.txt backups first.
- Disable automatic updating if you need to control the maintenance window.
- Record the currently selected Terraria version and the name of the active world.
- Confirm whether the panel will keep worlds, configuration, mods and logs.
- Check whether it offers a selectable target build rather than an unconditional “latest” action.
Apply and verify the panel change
- Stop the server from the panel and wait for the status to show that the process has ended.
- Use the panel’s version selector, update action or documented reinstall option.
- Start the server and inspect its console for the target build and the expected world.
- Connect with a client on the corresponding release, then check the world and configuration as you would after a manual installation.
If the panel applies an unexpected build, stop the server, preserve the new logs, and use the panel’s documented rollback or reinstall choice. Do not delete the previous save while diagnosing a version problem.
Downgrading a vanilla server
A downgrade uses the same safe file-replacement pattern, but the older package must be obtained from a trustworthy official or documented distribution. This guide does not establish a catalog of older Terraria server packages, so verify that the desired archive actually exists before scheduling the change.
- Save and stop the current server.
- Back up the world and
serverconfig.txt, and retain the current server folder. - Extract the older dedicated-server package into its own folder; never replace the only copy in place.
- Start that older executable with the intended world and test a client on the corresponding release.
- If the world does not load correctly or clients cannot connect, stop the older process and return to the retained working folder and backup.
Do not assume that a newer world save can be opened safely by every older server build. Make the backup before testing so you can restore the pre-downgrade state if the older executable cannot use the save.

Troubleshooting after the switch
The server starts, but clients cannot connect
- Compare the server package build with the client release each player is running.
- Confirm that you started the executable from the new version folder, not the old folder or an unrelated panel instance.
- Check whether a panel applied an automatic update that was different from the version you announced.
- Stop the server and correct the mismatch before repeatedly attempting connections.
The familiar world is missing
- Stop the process immediately so you do not accidentally save a newly generated world over the expected one.
- Review the world selection and the path supplied through
serverconfig.txt. - Compare the new folder with your dated backup and start again using the backed-up world.
Settings appear to have reset
The new folder may not contain the old configuration. Stop the server, compare its active settings with the preserved serverconfig.txt, and copy the verified configuration into the new installation before restarting. Keep the original backup unchanged so you can identify which setting caused the issue.
The new build behaves unexpectedly
End the maintenance test, keep the new folder and logs for diagnosis, and start the old server folder with the original world backup. Because the old files were kept rather than overwritten, rollback is a folder switch instead of an emergency reconstruction.
Final checklist
- The current dedicated-server build was confirmed on Terraria.org immediately before download.
- The world and
serverconfig.txtwere copied to a separate, dated backup location. - The old server folder remains intact.
- The target archive was extracted into a new, clearly named folder.
- The new executable opened the existing world.
- A client on the intended release connected and saw the correct world.
- Players were told which version to use, and automatic panel updates are controlled.
The Bottom Line
For a vanilla Terraria server, change versions by stopping cleanly, backing up the world and serverconfig.txt, extracting the matching dedicated-server package into a new folder, and testing the existing world before switching players over. Keep the previous folder until the new build is proven; it is your fastest rollback.
