To change the name other players see in VALORANT, edit your Riot ID on Riot’s account website. Sign in at account.riotgames.com, change the game-name alias and the tagline after the #, then save. The change is free. Riot normally requires a 90-day wait before your next free Riot ID change, so check spelling, length, availability and appropriateness before confirming.
How do I change my display name in VALORANT?
VALORANT does not use a separate in-client name-change item. Your visible name is your Riot ID, and you change it from the Riot account page.

- Open account.riotgames.com in a browser.
- Sign in to the Riot account connected to the VALORANT profile you want to edit. If you have more than one account, verify the account before changing anything.
- Open the Riot ID editing area. You will see two fields: the game-name alias and the tagline that follows the
#. - Enter the new alias and tagline. Both fields must meet Riot’s character and content rules, and the complete combination must be available.
- Save the change.
- Return to VALORANT and check your profile and social panel. The updated Riot ID is the identity other players use to find you in Riot games.
If the game was open while you changed the account, close and relaunch it if the old name remains on screen. The account page is the place where the change is made; VALORANT itself is where you see the result.
What is a VALORANT display name, and how is it different from my username?
VALORANT’s display identity is the Riot ID, not the username you type to sign in. A Riot ID has two visible parts: a game-name alias and a tagline after the #. The login username is a separate account credential, so changing your Riot ID does not rename the credential used to access your Riot account.

Riot applies separate limits to the alias and tagline. The alias by itself does not have to be unique; the complete Riot ID and tagline combination must be available.

“Alphanumeric” means letters and numbers. Punctuation, spaces and decorative symbols can cause the form to reject a proposed ID. Keep the # as the separator shown by Riot’s form rather than treating it as part of the alias or tagline you type.
Reserved regional tags
Some short tags are reserved as region codes and are unavailable when a player changes a tagline. Riot lists these examples: BR, LAS, LAN, OCE, NA, EUW, EUNE, TR, RU, KR, JP, PBE, BR1, LA1, LA2, OC1, NA1, ME, TW, VN and SEA. A tagline that looks valid in length can still fail if it matches one of these reserved codes.
Availability is checked on the full ID
Two players can use the same alias when their taglines differ. What must be available is the complete alias-and-tagline combination, so test the exact pair you intend to save rather than judging the alias by itself.

A rejection usually comes from one of five checks: length, character type, appropriateness, availability or a reserved regional tag. Work through the checks below instead of repeatedly submitting the same name.

When the account page says you changed recently
Riot normally blocks another free Riot ID change for 90 days after a change. If the page displays a recent-change notice, the block is usually the cooldown rather than a problem with the spelling of your new name. Do not try to bypass it by purchasing an item: Riot says there is no paid method for changing a Riot ID.
When the account shows an unexpected name or restriction
First confirm that you signed into the correct Riot account. If the account page still shows an unexpected name-change notice, or you believe harassment or another negative effect requires an exception, use Riot Player Support and explain the account situation. Riot identifies support contact as the route for players facing harassment or other negative effects.
How often can I change my VALORANT name?
The normal interval between free Riot ID changes is 90 days. The timer applies after you complete a change, so treat the saved name as a commitment for roughly the next three months.
Riot’s standard process is free, and Riot states that there is no paid way to purchase an additional Riot ID change. If harassment or another serious negative effect is involved, contact Player Support rather than looking for a paid workaround; support may be able to help with that situation.

What the 90-day wait means when choosing a name
- Correcting a typo may not be possible immediately after saving.
- A joke or trend that may age badly can remain attached to your account during the waiting period.
- You should check both fields, the complete-ID availability and the reserved-tag list before selecting Save.
Can I change my Riot ID from the VALORANT client or buy a rename?
No. The supported workflow is web-based: sign in to the Riot account page, edit the two Riot ID fields and save. VALORANT’s client displays the resulting identity but is not the place where you purchase or apply a rename.
The change itself is free. Be wary of websites or offers that claim to sell a Riot ID change, because Riot says there is no paid alternative to its free change process.
Where will the new name appear after I save it?
The new Riot ID is the name shown in VALORANT and in the social panel used to find players in Riot games. It is tied to the Riot account rather than to a single local installation of VALORANT.
If VALORANT still shows the old name
- Confirm that the account page displayed the intended Riot account when you saved.
- Sign out of VALORANT and start the client again so it refreshes the account identity.
- Check your profile and social panel after reconnecting.
- If the account page itself shows the old ID or a restriction, use Riot’s support process instead of repeatedly submitting the form.
Changing the Riot ID does not change the login username. Continue signing in with the same account credentials.

How should I choose a Riot ID before locking it in?
Because another free change normally requires a 90-day wait, evaluate the complete ID before saving. Use the following checklist.
- Readability: Make the alias easy to distinguish in a fast-moving match or social list.
- Length: Keep the alias within 3–16 characters and the tagline within 3–5.
- Character set: Use only letters and numbers; remove spaces, punctuation and symbols.
- Appropriateness: Avoid wording that could be interpreted as offensive or inappropriate.
- Availability: Check the exact alias-and-tagline pair, not just the alias.
- Regional tags: Do not use one of Riot’s reserved region-code tags as the tagline.
