You can change your Steam store country if you have moved or are living abroad for an extended period: while located in the new country, select it from your cart or checkout and complete a purchase with a payment method from that country. Steam requires the selected country to be where you currently reside and allows a country change only once every three months.
How to change your Steam country after moving
Steam does not provide a free-standing country selector in Account Details. Its country-change option appears in the cart or during checkout when your current location differs from the store country on your account. The change takes effect after you complete a purchase using a payment method from the new country.

- Check your current store country: Open Account Details. Steam says the store country is based on the location of your first purchase.
- Start checkout while in the country where you now reside: Add an item to your cart and continue to checkout. If your current location differs from the account’s store country, Steam should offer the option to select your current country.
- Select the correct country and payment method: Choose the country where you currently reside. Use a payment method from that country; available methods are shown at checkout.
- Complete the purchase: Steam updates the account’s store country after the purchase.
Steam allows this change once every three months. The country setting is for your country of residence, not a way to select another currency or shop at another region’s prices.

Why the country-change option may not appear
- You are traveling rather than moving: Steam expects the store country to match where you reside. A traveler using an established account generally keeps the home-country store.
- You do not have a matching payment method: Completing a purchase with a payment method from the selected country is part of the process.
- You changed countries recently: Steam permits a store-country change only once every three months.
- You created the account while abroad: Steam says a new user must return to their country of residence to set the store country.
- You are trying a code instead of checkout: Steam Wallet codes and CD keys cannot change the store-country setting.
Steam’s country-change guidance does not describe a separate settings-page workflow or a universal workaround when the option is unavailable. If you meet the residence and payment requirements but still cannot proceed, contact Steam Support.

Can a Wallet code or CD key change your Steam country?
No. Steam explicitly says Steam Wallet codes and CD keys cannot change store-country settings. Steam suggests looking for Steam-compatible codes at local game retailers if you cannot make purchases from your current store country, but those codes are only a purchase alternative; they do not change the account country.
Also check regional restrictions before buying a third-party key. Restrictions vary by publisher. Steam says most products bought directly for yourself from the Steam Store have no region restriction, but gifts may be restricted. Product pages show product restrictions, and gift restrictions appear during purchase or in the gift description. Can you use a VPN to change Steam region?
No. Do not use a VPN or proxy to disguise your location, switch store countries, or bypass regional pricing. Steam says purchases initiated through anonymous proxies are declined. It also says disguising your location with a VPN or proxy to redeem a restricted Steam gift violates its Terms of Service and may result in account restrictions. Attempts to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions may result in an account lock.

- Switch between the Steam client and website: If checkout fails on one, try completing it on the other.
- Disable proxy or VPN software: Steam recommends disabling it when troubleshooting purchase failures.
- Use a payment method that matches the current store country: Do not try to use a country change to get around a payment problem.
- For a Wallet currency mismatch while traveling, retry with your payment instrument: Steam advises trying the payment method instead of Steam Wallet funds.
- Contact Steam Support if the error remains: Include the exact error message and relevant purchase details.
