Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PS4 with its USB cable. It charges while the console is on, or in Rest Mode if the console is set to supply power to its USB ports. Sony estimates about two hours to charge a fully depleted controller; the actual result can vary.
Charge a DUALSHOCK 4 with your PS4
- Connect the controller to the PS4 using its USB cable.
- Charge with the console on. To charge in Rest Mode, first enable USB power in the console settings.
- To check the battery, hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu. The battery icon blinks while charging. PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 4 support guidance estimates about two hours to charge from empty. That is an approximate manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed charging time; battery life varies with use and the environment where the controller is used and stored.
Enable charging in Rest Mode
On PS4, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports, then choose a setting that supplies USB power. If you choose the three-hour option, USB power stops three hours after the console enters Rest Mode. While the controller charges in Rest Mode, its light bar slowly blinks orange; when charging is complete, the light bar turns off. PlayStation’s PS4 power guidance explains the USB-power setting.
4 common charging mistakes
1. Expecting it to charge while the PS4 is turned off
Sony specifies charging with the console on or in Rest Mode. A powered-off PS4 cannot charge the controller, so switch the console on or put it into Rest Mode with USB power enabled.
2. Leaving Rest Mode USB power disabled
Rest Mode alone is not enough: Supply Power to USB Ports must be set to a power-supplying option. If you selected the three-hour option, charging may stop when that period ends.

3. Assuming any cable or USB source will work
A computer or another USB device can be used with a USB-standard-compliant cable, but Sony cautions that some devices may not charge the controller. If one source does not work, try the PS4 or a different compliant cable rather than assuming every adapter or cable is compatible.
4. Misreading the charging indicators
Use the Quick Menu battery icon to check charge, and look for the slow orange light-bar blink when the controller is charging in Rest Mode. The light bar turns off when charging finishes. An unlit bar by itself does not confirm that charging is underway; check that the console is on or correctly set up for Rest Mode charging.

Other ways to charge
Sony also documents a dedicated DUALSHOCK 4 charging station. Its connector aligns with the controller’s extension port; during charging, the light bar slowly blinks orange and turns off when charging is complete. Check that a station is made for your controller and accessory model rather than assuming a generic dock will fit. PlayStation’s hardware support page provides access to official accessory documentation.
If you use a replacement cable, choose one that complies with USB standards; compatibility is not guaranteed for every cable or USB power source.

If the controller still will not charge
After checking the cable, power source, console state and Rest Mode USB setting, try Sony’s reset procedure: use the small reset button on the back of the controller, then reconnect it to the PS4 by USB. PlayStation’s troubleshooting instructions describe the reset and reconnection steps.
