Before buying a used Nintendo 3DS, test both screens, the touch panel, every control, charging, and—if possible—a physical game. Ask the seller to bring the console charged, its charger, and a game. Identify the exact model first: original 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS, and New 2DS XL have different features and parts. A quick inspection can reveal faults, but it cannot guarantee an old battery’s remaining life or rule out an intermittent problem.
1. Identify the model and prepare the test
Check the model name before judging its features or repair prospects. A 2DS has no stereoscopic 3D display; the other listed 3DS models are 3D-capable, though some software and content do not support 3D. Do not assume a screen is faulty because a particular game does not show depth. If testing 3D, use a known compatible game.

Use a bright, comfortable place where you can see the screens and inspect the case. Ask to test the console at the HOME Menu and, if available, with a physical game. If the seller cannot provide a charger or game, note which tests you could not complete rather than treating the console as fully checked.
2. Inspect the case, hinges, and screens
Look for structural damage
Check in good light for cracks, deep impact marks, loose panels, stripped screws, missing rubber pads, and corrosion or residue around ports. Open and close the system slowly. Its hinges should hold the normal open positions. Watch for screen flicker, blackouts, or a sudden shutdown as the hinge moves; these are practical warning signs, not a formal Nintendo grading standard.

Check both displays
Boot to the HOME Menu and view each screen against bright and dark backgrounds. Look for cracks, lines, pressure marks, dead pixels, unusual discoloration, dust beneath the panel, or separation between screen layers. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance recognizes screen display problems and debris as issues to check (Nintendo Americas touch-screen support; Nintendo Europe operations manual).
3. Test the touch screen and controls
Check touch response across the panel
Open Game Notes and draw slow lines through the center and near all four edges. Look for gaps, jumps, or input appearing somewhere other than where you touch. Nintendo recommends trying Game Notes when troubleshooting, checking for debris or smudges, and removing a screen protector if it is interfering; an unresolved touch problem may require service (Nintendo Americas touch-screen support). Do not remove a seller’s screen protector without permission; a badly applied protector can be difficult to distinguish from a digitizer fault.
Press every button and move each stick
Try the D-pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, Start, Select, Home, and both shoulder buttons. Each should press and release cleanly, without sticking or feeling markedly mushy. Move the Circle Pad through its full range and check that on-screen movement follows without drift or dead zones. On New models, test the C-stick and any additional controls. Nintendo’s 3DS XL manual documents Circle Pad and touch-screen calibration as troubleshooting steps; a calibration problem is not the same as proof of physical damage (Nintendo Europe operations manual). Nintendo also advises checking whether a button is stuck when diagnosing touch problems, and says service may be needed if the issue remains (Nintendo Americas touch-screen support).
4. Check sound, cameras, and wireless functions
Raise and lower the volume and listen to both speakers. If practical, connect headphones and check their output. Open the camera app and inspect the front and rear camera views. Check the wireless switch or setting; local wireless testing requires another compatible device. These checks can expose basic faults that a HOME Menu boot will not, but a brief test does not establish that every feature will work reliably over time.

5. Check charging, power, and the battery
Confirm charging works
Power the console off and connect a known-good compatible charger. Look for the orange charge indicator and make sure the plug stays seated without needing to be wiggled. A low-charge console can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it turns on. Nintendo Australia identifies adapter model WAP-002 for 3DS-family systems; check regional plug and adapter compatibility rather than assuming a charger from another market is suitable. Nintendo says the port may look slightly bent by design and that appearance alone is not damage unless it prevents insertion (Nintendo Australia charging support).
Nintendo Australia gives about 3½ hours as a full-charge reference, and estimates 3–5 hours playing Nintendo 3DS software or 5–8 hours playing Nintendo DS software, with runtime varying by screen brightness. Those are manufacturer reference figures, not a pass/fail battery-health test for an aged used console (Nintendo Australia charging support).

Look for swelling or leakage
Inspect the back cover and case seams for bulging or separation, and see whether the console rocks on a flat surface. Do not press or puncture a swollen battery. Nintendo’s manual says expansion can occur and is not by itself a malfunction or safety hazard, but recommends replacing the battery if expansion affects battery life. Do not touch a leaking battery; contact Nintendo Customer Support. Pronounced swelling, leakage, or case distortion is a reason to stop and assess the risk rather than proceed casually (Nintendo Europe operations manual).

6. Test a game card and confirm the handover
Try a physical game if possible
Insert a known-working game card, launch it, and confirm that it reads consistently after restarting the console. Inspect the card slot for visible debris or damage. A successful HOME Menu boot does not test the game-card reader. If you cannot test a card, treat the slot as unverified.

Check access and restrictions
Ask the seller to show that the system reaches the HOME Menu and can open System Settings. Ask whether parental controls are enabled; have the seller remove restrictions or demonstrate that the console can be configured before payment. Do not count installed digital games as part of the value unless you have independently verified the applicable account rules and can establish that the purchases will be accessible to you. A seller’s account-linked library is not automatically a transferable feature of the hardware.

Check service availability in your country
Nintendo’s Americas touch-screen support page says it no longer services the original 3DS, original 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, and 2DS models listed there; it lists New 2DS XL as available for service on that page. This is an Americas support statement, not a worldwide promise, and it concerns service status on that page rather than every possible repair. Check Nintendo support for your country and exact model. If official service is unavailable, a fault may mean third-party repair or parts sourcing, which can change what the console is worth (Nintendo Americas touch-screen support).
Do not pay for discontinued online features
Nintendo ended Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases and downloads of free content, including demos, on March 27, 2023. Nintendo said users could still redownload previously purchased games and DLC and receive software updates “for the foreseeable future”; that does not guarantee access to purchases tied to the seller’s account (Nintendo eShop discontinuation Q&A).
Nintendo ended online play and other functionality using online communication on April 8, 2024. That includes online co-op, internet rankings, and data distribution. Offline modes remain usable. StreetPass uses local communication and remains available, while SpotPass features requiring online communication no longer function. Nintendo said Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter online services were still usable when it made its announcement, but warned that this could change (Nintendo online-services announcement).
8. Compare two listings on the same terms
Use the same checks for each console; cosmetic wear alone is less important than structural damage or a fault that is difficult to repair.
