PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe safest used-PlayStation purchase is one you can test before paying. Confirm the exact model and serial label, inspect the case and warranty seal, verify a stable HDMI picture and working ports, test the controller and disc drive where applicable, watch the console boot and run a game, and make sure the seller has removed their account. If an essential test fails or the seller will not allow a basic inspection, walk away.
This process applies to PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 models with a disc drive. A console that looks clean can still have an intermittent HDMI socket, drifting stick, failing storage device, noisy cooling system or account left behind, so appearance alone is not evidence of good condition.

Start by identifying exactly what is being sold
Read the listing as a specification, not a promise. Write down the stated generation, model variant, storage capacity, disc capability, included accessories and condition. Then compare that description with the labels on the actual console.

- Confirm whether it is a PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PS5 Digital Edition or a PS5 model with a disc drive.
- Check whether the advertised storage and accessories are included. A missing stand, power lead, HDMI cable or controller changes the real cost.
- For a PS5, establish whether the model has an optical drive before you travel. A Digital Edition has no drive and cannot be evaluated as though it were a disc model.
Photograph the model and serial-number labels before you hand over money. Compare the markings with the listing photographs and the seller’s description. Sony’s buying guidance specifically advises checking for removed serial numbers and broken warranty seals. A missing, scratched-out or altered serial number makes the unit’s identity and support history harder to establish; treat it as a reason not to buy rather than as a cosmetic defect.
#1 Best Overall

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Ask for a live test before travelling
A remote demonstration can save a wasted journey. Sony’s PlayStation buying guide says: “Before agreeing to take a look in person, ask the seller for a video that shows them testing all ports, buttons, and disc drives (if applicable).” Request a continuous, recent video rather than a collection of old photographs.
What the video should show
- The console powered off, then starting from a cold boot.
- The model and serial labels in the same session as the test.
- A direct connection to a television or monitor with a visible picture and sound.
- Each USB port being used for charging or data, where practical.
- The controller pairing and every button being pressed.
- A game or application launching and remaining usable for several minutes.
- The network test or an online connection being completed.
- A compatible disc being inserted, recognized, played or installed, and ejected if the console has a drive.
If the seller will only provide powered-off photographs, refuses to show the serial label, or says testing is impossible despite having the console, price the transaction as unverified and normally pass. A video is useful screening evidence, not a substitute for your own handover inspection.
Inspect the exterior before connecting anything
Examine the console in good light and look at the rear ports as well as the front and sides. Dust is not automatically fatal, but a combination of contamination, impact marks and missing parts can indicate a harder life.
Walk around the case
- Look for cracks, liquid marks, swelling, warped panels and deep impact damage.
- Check the feet and any supplied stand. A broken foot can leave the console unstable or block ventilation.
- Inspect removable covers, port flaps and panels for missing clips or gaps.
- Look through ventilation openings for heavy dust, insect debris or signs of liquid exposure.
- Check whether screws, warranty seals or panel edges show evidence of opening.
- Inspect the HDMI socket for a bent tongue, looseness, broken housing or a plug that will not sit securely.
Do not open the console during a casual purchase inspection. Sony’s safety information excludes altered serial numbers and unauthorized opening or service from warranty coverage. Ask the seller directly whether it has been repaired, cleaned internally or modified, and record the answer in writing.
Bring a small test kit
For an in-person meeting, take the items needed to test the functions that matter. Agree in advance that you will connect equipment and run a game; this avoids an argument at the door.
- A known-good television or monitor with the right HDMI input.
- A known-good HDMI cable, unless the seller can prove the supplied cable works.
- A compatible game disc or movie disc for a console advertised with a drive.
- A USB cable suitable for charging and data, plus a small USB accessory if you want to test data recognition.
- Headphones with the appropriate plug for checking the controller headset jack.
- Your own account only after the seller has signed out and the console has been reset; do not enter personal credentials on a seller’s profile.
If carrying a display is impractical, insist on a live video test using the seller’s equipment and make the sale conditional on an agreed return period.
Test the picture, sound and every useful port
Connect the console directly to a known-good TV or monitor. Avoid an AV receiver, HDMI switch or capture device during the first test because an extra link can hide a fault.
Recommended Free Tools
HDMI and display checks
- With the console off, connect the cable firmly at both ends.
- Start the console and wait for the home screen to appear.
- Confirm that the picture does not flicker, drop out, show colored artifacts or require the plug to be held at an angle.
- Play a game or open an application and move through menus to check for intermittent loss of signal.
- Verify sound through the TV or monitor and, if available, test a second HDMI input or display.
An HDMI connection that works only after repeated reconnecting is not “nearly fine”; it is an intermittent fault that can require board-level repair. Do not pay full price on the assumption that a new cable will cure a loose socket.
USB, power and network
Test each accessible USB port with a charging cable and, where possible, a device that the console should recognize. Confirm that a controller charges and remains connected while you move the cable. Check the power lead, connector and switch behavior for looseness or unexpected shutdowns.
Connect to the seller’s network or a permitted hotspot and run the built-in test. On PS4, the path is Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. The test does not guarantee future online service, but it can reveal a failed network interface or a console that cannot complete basic connectivity. On PS5, verify that the console reaches its network settings and can establish a connection under the same conditions.
Check the controller as a separate item
A console can be sound while its included controller needs replacement. Pair the controller and test it while a game is running, not just on the home screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Input and motion tests
- Press every face button, the D-pad, both stick clicks and the shoulder buttons.
- Move each analog stick slowly through its full range, then release it. A character or menu cursor that moves without input indicates drift.
- Hold the triggers at different positions to detect sticking or a dead zone.
- Use the touchpad on a compatible PS4 or PS5 title or system screen.
- Rotate and tilt the controller in a game or menu that responds to motion.
- Plug headphones into the controller jack and check audio and microphone detection if supported.
Battery, cable and wireless behavior
Disconnect the cable and confirm that the controller stays paired wirelessly. Reconnect it and verify charging. A controller that works only while tethered, loses connection across the room or has a cable that fits loosely should be valued as defective or replacement-only. Deduct the cost of an appropriate replacement DualSense or DualShock 4 from your offer rather than assuming the seller will include one later.
Test the disc drive only when the model has one
First confirm the model. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, while the PS5 disc version supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. Do not treat the absence of a drive as a fault on a Digital Edition, and do not accept a Digital Edition when the listing promises a disc model.
Insertion and recognition
- Use a known-good compatible game or movie disc with a clean, readable surface.
- Insert it without forcing the mechanism.
- Wait for the console to display the title and begin installation or playback.
- Listen for grinding, repeated clicking, scraping or a motor that continually retries.
- Eject the disc from the system menu and confirm that it comes out cleanly.
- Repeat with another known-good disc if the first one is not recognized.
A single damaged disc can create a false failure, but a drive that rejects multiple known-good discs, makes mechanical noise or cannot eject reliably is a material repair risk. If the drive was advertised, either negotiate a repair-backed price or walk away.
Observe boot, storage and heat behavior
Let the console start fully rather than accepting a quick power-on demonstration. Open settings, launch a game or application and leave it operating long enough to expose obvious instability.
Rank #2
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold separately
Warning signs during use
- Unexpected shutdowns, repeated restarts or failure to reach the home screen.
- Overheating warnings, an unusually loud fan surge that does not settle, or heat accompanied by a shutdown.
- Corrupted-storage messages, missing installed games or repeated error codes.
- Menus that freeze, applications that crash consistently or loading behavior that never completes.
- Ports that disconnect when the cable is moved normally.
Official PlayStation support pages provide troubleshooting and reset procedures, but they do not certify how much life remains in a second-hand console. A successful boot is a snapshot, not a prediction of future reliability. Record any error code exactly and do not let the seller dismiss recurring messages as a software update issue without demonstrating a clean restart and repeat test.
Remove the seller’s account and reset the console
The seller should deactivate the console and no longer have access to it. At handover, ask the seller to sign out in front of you. Do not accept a device that opens directly into another person’s account or asks you to rely on their password later.
At the handover
- Have the seller sign out of their PlayStation account.
- Confirm that no profile, payment method or parental-control credential is required to reach the setup screen.
- Check that the seller has removed the console from their account and deactivated it where the account tools require that action.
- Only after those steps, complete the reset using the official system process.
Sony’s transfer and disposal guidance says: “Before you replace, transfer, or dispose of your PlayStation®5 console or PlayStation®4 console, be sure to back up your data and reset your console.” The seller is responsible for backing up anything they want to keep. You should perform the reset before adding your own account, then complete initial setup with your credentials on a clean system.
A seller who says they will remove the account later creates an avoidable security and ownership problem. If access remains linked, do not complete the purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccount for accessories and missing parts
List every item physically present before agreeing on a price: console, controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand, USB charging cable, original packaging and any disc-drive component required by the particular PS5 configuration. Test each item rather than accepting “it was working last time.”
Missing low-cost accessories are negotiable when the omission is documented. Missing or incompatible parts that prevent normal operation are not ordinary cosmetic wear; include their replacement cost in your offer or reject the deal.
Review warranty, repairs and return protection
Ask for the original receipt if available, the purchase date, any repair invoice and the seller’s written return period. Ask specifically whether the case was opened, the board was serviced or liquid damage occurred.
Do not assume a used console carries the manufacturer’s new-product warranty. Third-party used products may have no Sony warranty, and coverage can be affected by altered serial numbers or unauthorized opening or service. A seller’s own return window is valuable only when it is written, states who pays return shipping, explains how faults are assessed and gives you enough time to perform the tests above.
Calculate the total cost, not just the listing price
Compare the complete used setup with a retailer-backed refurbished option. Use the same condition standard for both and include likely costs that are easy to overlook.
| Cost item | Questions to answer | How it affects the offer |
|---|---|---|
| Console | Is the exact generation and variant confirmed? | Do not pay a disc-model price for a Digital Edition or an incorrectly described model. |
| Controller | Do all inputs, wireless functions, battery and charging work? | Subtract the cost of a replacement DualSense or DualShock 4 when it fails testing. |
| Stand and cables | Are the required stand, power lead, HDMI cable and USB cable present and usable? | Add replacement costs for missing or damaged essentials. |
| Disc drive | Does the advertised drive recognize and eject known-good media? | Price a failed drive as a repair risk, not as a minor accessory. |
| Storage | Does the system boot, retain installed data and avoid corruption messages? | Allow for storage replacement or reinstallation risk if errors recur. |
| Shipping and returns | Who pays delivery, insurance and return postage? | Include both directions of shipping in the maximum price you will pay. |
| Protection | Is there a written return period, receipt or remaining warranty? | A shorter or absent protection period justifies a lower price or a different purchase. |
Prices and inventory change, so keep this comparison time-neutral. The relevant figure is the delivered, usable setup after replacing missing items and allowing for return risk, not the headline number in the listing.
Use clear buy, negotiate and walk-away rules
| Decision | Use it when | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Buy | The model and serial identity are clear, essential tests pass, the seller’s access is removed, and return or warranty terms are acceptable. | Complete the reset, pay using an agreed method, and keep the listing and written terms. |
| Negotiate | Only documented cosmetic wear or a missing low-cost accessory is present, with all core functions working. | State the replacement or repair cost and put the adjusted price in writing. |
| Walk away | The seller refuses testing, identity cannot be verified, account access remains, power or HDMI is intermittent, or an advertised disc drive fails. | Do not rely on a promise to repair, reset or provide parts later. |
Model-specific checkpoints
PS4 and PS4 Pro
Confirm the label identifies the promised generation and variant, then run the full display, USB, network, controller and software checks. Use Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection to verify basic connectivity. If the unit includes a disc drive, test insertion, recognition, playback or installation and ejection with known-good media. Watch for loud fan behavior, storage errors and repeated shutdowns during a game.
PS5 with a disc drive
Verify that the model actually includes the drive, test direct HDMI output, USB charging and data, wireless controller operation, network access and a game launch. Check that the drive accepts and ejects media and supports the type of disc you intend to use. The disc version supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media.
PS5 Digital Edition
Confirm that the absence of a drive matches the listing and price. Concentrate on HDMI stability, USB ports, network connectivity, controller health, storage behavior, thermals and account reset. Do not pay extra for an optical-drive capability this model does not have.
Complete the handover safely
- Save photographs of the model, serial label, accessories and any agreed cosmetic defects.
- Run the essential tests while the seller is present.
- Have the seller sign out and remove their access.
- Reset the console before adding your account.
- Record the final price, included items and return terms in messages or a receipt.
- Keep the listing, conversation and test video until you are satisfied that the console remains stable.
The best used-console deal is not necessarily the cheapest listing. It is the one whose identity, core functions, account status and protection terms are all verifiable before payment.
