Check the game publisher’s official status page—and the status of the platform you play on—before changing your home network. Match the reported incident to your game, region, platform, and affected service; if those are healthy, troubleshoot locally in a controlled order instead of repeatedly restarting equipment.
A failed login, matchmaking error, disconnect, or voice-chat problem can come from different places: the game service, a console or PC platform, a particular regional server, or your own connection. A quick status check helps you identify which boundary is most likely at fault before you spend time changing settings.

How can I tell whether the game servers are down?
Start with the game publisher’s official service-status page, then check the platform’s network status if you play through a console or launcher. The whole check can take only a few minutes: identify the service you use, inspect the relevant first-party pages, and compare their incident scope with your symptom. A status page is most useful when its incident matches your exact game, platform, region, and affected feature—not merely when its headline says “online.”
- Write down the failure. Note the game, launcher or platform, device, region, and exact symptom: for example, login failure, matchmaking error, disconnect, or voice failure. Include when it began. Being specific matters: a voice-chat issue and a login failure may involve different components.
- Open the publisher’s first-party status page. Steam Support advises players to check Steam Server Status to determine whether a problem is related to system-wide downtime. Activision’s Online Services page provides status checks for a selected game and links to Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net, Nintendo, Steam, Epic Games, and Ubisoft+ status resources.
- Check the platform separately. A game may be available while a console network or launcher service is not. EA separates individual game status from platform servers; the Activision page links platform status checks as well.
- Match the incident to your setup. Look for the affected title, region, platform, mode or component. A problem limited to one region or platform may leave other players able to connect.
- Record the timing and status wording. Note the incident start time, latest update, maintenance window, and whether the provider says it is investigating, has identified the issue, is monitoring a fix, or has resolved it.
Steam Support’s guidance is direct: “Please check the Steam Server Status page to ensure the issue which you are encountering is not related to system-wide downtime.” Epic Games Support likewise notes that login trouble or being kicked out during a match may be due to a server outage. These checks are a fast first filter, not a guarantee that every account-specific or short-lived problem will appear on a public page.

Use the result to decide what to do next, not to declare a cause prematurely. A matching provider incident is strong evidence that you should wait for an update. A page with no matching incident means it is reasonable to test your local setup; it does not prove that every service component, account, or network route is working normally.
Which status page should I check for my game?
Use the publisher’s official page for the game, and the platform’s status page for the service through which you connect. The official pages differ in how much detail they show, so check more than one when your game depends on a separate console network, launcher, or online component.

- Epic Games: Epic Games Status is referenced in Epic’s connection guidance for checking service availability.
- Console networks: Check the Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo network status when the game runs through that platform. Publisher support pages may link to the relevant platform check.
Bookmark the publisher and platform pages for the games you play most. That avoids relying on search snippets, old social posts, or a status page for the wrong title. If a publisher page links to the platform check, follow that link so you verify the appropriate service rather than a similarly named one.
Think of the service boundary as a chain: the game’s online service, the launcher or console network, your device, and your home connection all have to work together. A page for one link in that chain cannot confirm the condition of the others. For example, a healthy game-service indicator does not rule out a platform outage, and a healthy platform indicator does not establish that a game’s authentication or matchmaking component is available.
How do I read a game status page correctly?
Read the incident details and scope, not only the overall green or “operational” label. Status pages can report different conditions for separate games, regions, platforms, or components.

| Status shown | What it usually tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Operational or online | No incident is posted for the component shown. It does not establish that every account, route, or local connection is working. | If the symptom continues, check the matching platform status and proceed to controlled local checks. |
| Degraded or partial outage | Some functions, regions, or platforms may be failing while others remain available. | Compare the incident scope with your region, platform, and the feature that is failing. |
| Maintenance | The provider has scheduled service downtime or work for a stated window. | Wait for the window to end and look for a subsequent update before changing local settings. |
| Investigating or identified | The provider is examining the incident or has identified a cause; the service may still be affected. | Keep the incident page available and check its update time rather than repeating network changes. |
| Monitoring | A fix has been deployed or service restored, and the operator is watching for recurrence. | Retry periodically; the incident has not necessarily been marked resolved yet. |
| Resolved | The provider considers the incident closed. | Retry the game. If it still fails, continue local checks; a session or route may not recover at the same moment as the public status. |
Riot’s page illustrates why scope matters: it separates games, regions, platforms, current messages, recently closed incidents, and planned maintenance. EA separates game and platform status, Ubisoft can distinguish platforms, and Rockstar can show individual components. A healthy status for one component is not evidence that a different component is healthy.

A notice may say that a specific region or platform is affected, while another remains available. The start time helps you see whether the notice overlaps with your first failed connection; the latest update tells you whether the provider’s assessment has changed. If a page has recently closed incidents, those can help clarify whether a problem that appeared to be current has already been marked resolved.
Do not treat “monitoring” as identical to “resolved.” Monitoring means the operator is watching a deployed fix or restored service for recurrence; the page may still be tracking the incident. Conversely, after a provider marks an issue resolved, your own cached session or local route may not recover at precisely the same moment. Retry, then move on to local checks if your symptom persists.
What should I do if the status page shows an outage?
If the provider reports an incident or maintenance that matches your symptom, region, and platform, wait for the provider’s update before changing your router or firewall. Keep the incident start time and latest update, then retry after the stated maintenance window or when the provider reports recovery.
- Confirm that the notice applies to your game and platform, rather than another title or service.
- Check whether the notice is regional or limited to a specific feature.
- Watch for status changes such as identified, monitoring, and resolved; they describe different points in the response.
- If the incident is resolved but you still cannot connect, test your own setup. The end of a provider incident does not establish that your individual session or connection has recovered.
Repeated router restarts during a confirmed provider outage are unlikely to clarify the cause. Save the time of the outage and your next test so you can tell whether a later failure began inside or outside the reported incident window. If the page gives a maintenance window, check it again after that window rather than making repeated local changes while planned service work is underway.

If the status page is silent but you see reports from friends or other players, treat those reports as a clue rather than confirmation. They may be using another region, platform, or game mode. Verify the issue against the publisher’s and platform’s own status information before deciding that a wider outage explains your connection.
What should I check if the game’s servers appear healthy?
When the relevant publisher and platform pages show no matching incident, test your local setup from the simplest change to the more involved checks. Change one thing at a time so you can see whether it affected the result.
- Restart the game. Close it fully and launch it again, then retry the action that failed. A fresh attempt gives you a clear comparison with the original symptom.
- Restart the device. Reboot the console or PC and test again. Keep the game and the action you test the same where possible, so the comparison stays useful.
- Restart the router. Reboot the router, allow it to reconnect, and retry. Epic recommends checking with the ISP for outages or performance issues when no service outage is posted, as well as rebooting the router.
- Install pending updates. Check for game, launcher, operating-system, and driver updates. SEGA also advises checking client status and system updates. An outdated client or system is a reason to update and retest before making more advanced network changes.
- Try a direct wired connection. If practical, connect the device directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. Steam recommends a direct wired test to help isolate wireless or powerline interference; a successful wired test points toward the wireless or powerline path, but does not prove the game servers are online. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one option for a direct router-to-device test.
- Review firewall rules and background applications. Steam recommends reviewing firewall rules and disabling interfering background applications. Change only settings you understand, and restore them if the test makes no difference. Avoid changing several rules at once, because then you cannot tell which change mattered.
- Check for unwanted software. Steam lists spyware, adware, and viruses among possible sources of interference and recommends scanning for them. If the relevant services appear healthy and connection trouble continues, a scan is one of the checks to consider.
- Check time and router configuration. SEGA advises verifying synchronized system time and modem/router configuration. Confirm the device clock is synchronized and review the configuration using the relevant device or modem/router guidance rather than making speculative changes.
- Contact your ISP if the problem persists. Ask whether there is an outage or performance issue on your connection. If the connection appears healthy but the device still cannot connect, Epic advises contacting the device manufacturer.
A mobile-hotspot comparison can add evidence: if the same device and game behave differently on another network, that suggests the home connection or its route may be involved. It does not prove that the publisher’s service is healthy, and a hotspot’s own limits can affect the result. Keep the test controlled: use the same device and game, note the time, and compare the same connection action.
Ethernet is also an isolation test, not a general cure. If the game works over a direct wired connection but not over Wi-Fi or powerline, that points toward the home wireless or powerline path. If it fails on both, the cause could still be the game, platform, device, ISP, or a route between them; the test alone does not identify which one. Avoid jumping straight to advanced router or firewall changes before completing the simpler checks.
How can I tell a game outage from a platform, ISP, or home-network problem?
Compare the scope of the failure, the provider’s incident evidence, whether the problem follows you to another device or network, and whether controlled changes alter the result. No single test proves the cause, but the pattern narrows it down.

|---|---|---|
| An official incident matches the title, region, platform, or failing component. | A game-service or component outage. | Follow the incident updates and retry when the affected service is reported recovered. |
| The game page looks healthy, but a console network or launcher reports trouble. | A platform or launcher service issue. | Check that platform’s status separately from the game publisher’s page. |
| Several games or online services fail on the same home connection. | A broader home-network or ISP issue is possible. | Check with the ISP for outages or performance issues; test a wired connection if possible. |
| The game works on another network but not on the home connection. | The home connection or its route may be involved. | Compare wired and wireless behavior and contact the ISP if the issue persists. |
| Other people can play, but their region, platform, game mode, or account differs from yours. | A narrower issue remains possible despite their success. | Compare like with like: same region, platform, service component, and approximate time. |
| Only one device fails while another on the same connection works. | A device, client, update, or local configuration issue is possible. | Check updates, restart the device, and review firewall or background-app interference. |
Friends’ reports are useful only when the comparison is close. A friend on another platform or in another region may be using a service path that is unaffected. Likewise, an “online” page and a failed connection can both be accurate if the problem is account-specific, brief, or limited to a component the headline does not summarize.
Use four questions to compare competing explanations:
- Scope: Is the problem global, regional, platform-specific, tied to a game mode or component, or limited to one account?
- Evidence: Is there a provider incident or maintenance notice that matches, or only a local symptom?
- Reproducibility: Does the same failure occur on another device or network, or only on one home connection?
- Time and control: Did it begin during an incident, patch, or maintenance window, and does restarting, updating, or switching to Ethernet change the result?
These comparisons help organize evidence, but they are not proof on their own. For example, a failure on one network but not another makes the home connection or route more plausible; it does not establish that the game service is healthy. Similarly, a friend who can play is meaningful evidence only if the friend is using the same relevant service scope at roughly the same time.
What information should I keep before contacting support?
A short, precise record helps distinguish a fresh local failure from a provider incident that has already ended. Record the facts while they are visible rather than relying on memory after several troubleshooting steps.
- Game title, device, launcher or platform, and region.
- The specific symptom and the time it began, including time zone if possible.
- The matching status page, incident wording, affected scope, and its latest update time.
- Whether another game or online feature works on the same device and connection.
- Which controlled checks you tried—restart, update, Ethernet, or another network—and whether each changed the result.
This record is especially useful when the status page changes during troubleshooting: it preserves whether your first failure coincided with a reported outage and what happened after recovery. Keeping a separate test time for each change also helps you avoid confusing an outage that has ended with a new local connection failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my account be the problem if the game status page says everything is online?
Yes. A public service page reports service conditions, not necessarily the health or access state of every individual account. If the same device and connection work for other accounts but not yours, give the publisher support the account-specific symptom and the time it began.
Why can friends play when I cannot connect?
Their successful connection is only a useful comparison if they are on the same game, platform, region, and relevant service component. Differences in any of those can leave them unaffected by a narrower incident or connection problem.
Should I use an outage-reporting website instead of the publisher’s status page?
Treat community reports as a clue that others may be seeing a similar symptom, not as confirmation of the affected game component or region. Verify the scope and timing against the publisher’s and platform’s own status information before changing your network.
What should I check first if the game and platform pages both say operational?
Restart the game, then the console or PC, and then the router. Check for game, launcher, operating-system, and driver updates. If the problem continues, try a direct Ethernet connection, review firewall rules and interfering background apps, and ask your ISP whether there is an outage or performance issue.
Does a wired connection prove the game servers are online?
No. Steam recommends a direct wired test to isolate wireless or powerline interference. If the game works over Ethernet but not over the other connection, the local wireless or powerline path may be involved; that result does not confirm the state of the game servers.
What does a status page’s “monitoring” state mean?
The operator is watching a deployed fix or restored service for recurrence. Retry periodically and keep checking the incident page; monitoring is not necessarily the same as the provider marking the incident resolved.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if an outage is marked resolved but I still cannot log in?
Retry the game, then check the relevant platform and continue with controlled local checks if the failure remains. A public incident may be closed even though an individual session or network route has not recovered at the same moment.
The Bottom Line
Check the publisher’s and platform’s official status pages first, matching any incident to your title, region, platform, and failing component. If they show no relevant outage, work through restarts, updates, a direct wired test, local software checks, and an ISP check one at a time. Record the incident and test times so you can distinguish provider downtime from a problem that persists on your own connection.
