To check whether an NFL player is limited in practice, look up the current week’s official injury report on NFL.com or the player’s team report. Read Practice Status and Game Status separately: limited participation describes practice work, while the game-status designation is the direct indication of reported availability.
How to check a player’s current status
- Find the current week’s official report. Search for the player on the NFL injury report. It lists the player, position, injury, practice status, and game status. Team-published reports can also provide the club’s update.
- Check each practice day. Read the entry for every reported practice rather than relying on a single day’s listing. The NFL defines limited participation as less than 100% of a player’s normal repetitions. The other practice categories are Did Not Participate and Full Participation.
- Read the separate Game Status field. The NFL’s definitions are: Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play; Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate; Out means the player will not play.
- Look for “Not Injury Related.” An uninjured player’s rest-related practice absence should be identified this way. Do not treat it as an injury-based game designation.
- Check again near kickoff. Filing deadlines depend on the day of the game. For the 2026–27 season, clubs must file by 4:00 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice, according to the NFL’s important-dates schedule. Clubs must report a change if a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report.
What “limited participation” means
The NFL’s definition is “Limited Participation (defined as less than 100 percent of a player’s normal repetitions).” It describes how much of the player’s normal practice work was completed; it does not say by itself whether the player will be available for the game.
An injured player can appear on the practice report even when the club is certain the player will play. Under the NFL policy, a player certain to play is generally not listed on the Game Status Report; if that player is later deactivated, the club must explain the change to the league. Practice participation and game status are therefore separate pieces of information, not interchangeable labels.
How to interpret changes across the week
For a clearer picture of the reported status, compare the latest game designation, the sequence of practice entries, whether an absence is marked Not Injury Related, and when the report was updated. A progression from limited to full participation is a change in practice status, not a guarantee of game availability; the current Game Status field remains the direct availability signal in the report.

These reports describe reported participation and status, not an individualized medical prognosis. The NFL’s 2016 explanation of why it eliminated the former “Probable” designation said approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years did play. That is a historical league figure, not a current rate or a forecast for any particular player.
