How to Check Storage Usage in Steam

Steam’s Storage Manager shows installed content by library drive. Here’s where to find it and what its figures do—and do not—include.

To see how much space installed Steam games use, open the Steam desktop client and go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders. This opens Storage Manager, where you can review installed content by library drive. It does not provide a confirmed total for every game you own, including titles that are not installed.

Find Steam’s Storage Manager

  1. Open the Steam desktop client.
  2. Select Steam in the upper-left corner, then choose Settings.
  3. Open Downloads and select Steam Library Folders.
  4. Review the installed content and storage information for each library drive. If your games are installed on multiple drives, check each drive separately.

Steam Support documents this route for managing game installation locations and library folders: Steam Support: Installed games are appearing as uninstalled. Labels can change between client versions; if you do not see the exact path, look in Settings for Storage or Downloads and the library-folder control.

What the storage figures mean

  • Installed usage is space occupied by Steam content installed in a library on a drive.
  • Available space is the remaining free capacity on that drive, not the amount used by Steam games.
  • Owned-library size would include games you own but have not installed. The sources available do not establish that Storage Manager calculates this total.

Community reports describe the usage as drive-specific and say the view does not include the sizes of uninstalled games; treat that behavior as user-reported rather than a guarantee in Steam’s official documentation. If you need an aggregate across drives, you may need to add the separate drive figures yourself.

If a game appears uninstalled

A storage check and Steam’s recognition of an installation are different issues. Steam Support’s article on games appearing uninstalled explains how to use Storage Manager to manage locations and add an existing library folder. Use that guidance if the game files are present but Steam does not recognize the installation; the usage view alone does not restore or verify a missing game.

Consider the drive before moving or expanding storage

If the figures show you are short on capacity, compare available space and compatibility with your computer before choosing an upgrade. Steam says it does not recommend external hard drives for Steam games because they can cause performance problems and may disconnect at inconvenient times. See Steam Support’s installation guidance for that caution.
