To complete “I See Darkness,” speak with Betrys in the Village, investigate the marked campsite near the King’s Road, follow the dream to Abhartach, then return to Betrys. The route below follows a third-party walkthrough published May 29, 2025; quest behavior may differ by game version, and historical players have reported bugs.
Start the quest with Betrys
Find Betrys in the Village, near a man in a cage, and speak with her about the illness affecting the Keepers. Agree to investigate to begin the reported quest sequence. The May 29, 2025 walkthrough describes this as the quest’s starting point.

Investigate the campsite and follow the dream
- Follow the quest marker to a campsite near the King’s Road, north of the fortress.
- Defeat the Corpse Eater the walkthrough reports encountering there.
- Use the marked sleeping mat to rest.
- In the dream, follow the voice until you reach Abhartach, described in the guide as a chained Fore-Dweller in a pit.
Decide whether to let Abhartach bite you
The walkthrough reports two outcomes. Allowing the bite causes minor damage and kills Abhartach; refusing leads to a brief fight. It says both choices yield loot, including the Fore-Dweller’s Bauble. These outcomes are reported by a third-party guide, not confirmed in an official quest walkthrough.

Return to Betrys and decide what to do about Col
After the dream encounter, return to Betrys. The guide says she reports that Mahon has recovered, while Col remains catatonic. If a Spirituality dialogue option appears, you can try to persuade Betrys to let you end Col’s suffering. The guide does not state an exact Spirituality threshold, so there is no confirmed number to target.

“I See Darkness” bugged? What to try if dialogue will not advance
Historical reports show that the quest has stalled for some players, but do not establish whether the issue persists in the current version. On November 29, 2024, a Steam account labeled as a developer acknowledged the issue: “This quest tends to bug out, we’ll be fixing that.”

In a February 2025 Steam discussion, one player reported that progress depended on other quests or steps, naming “Branded and Exiled,” “Best Friends Forever,” and “Pure Morning.” The player was unsure about one prerequisite, so treat these as troubleshooting leads, not a guaranteed fix. If Betrys’s dialogue does not advance, check whether those quest threads are available or unfinished, then return to her and try again.
An older Steam discussion from 2023 describes a different quest thread involving “hard proof,” Tangard, and the quartermaster. It conflicts with the later illness, campsite, and Abhartach route; do not combine those older instructions with this walkthrough. Quest content may have changed between versions.
