To check whether Microsoft Office 2010 is activated and determine whether its installed license is KMS, MAK, retail, or another channel, use the built-in Office Software Protection Platform script. Open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the Office14 folder, and run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. Read the license state, edition, description or channel, and the final five characters of the installed key. If several Office licenses are present, run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusall instead.
“Licensed” answers whether Office is currently usable; it does not, by itself, identify the activation method. The description or channel text, plus the appropriate activation-history command, is what distinguishes KMS, MAK, retail, and other licensing arrangements.

What is the difference between activation status and activation type?
Activation status is the current condition of the installed Office license. Activation type is the mechanism or channel that validated it. These are related but separate pieces of information, so a result such as License Status: Licensed confirms a usable license without proving that the computer uses KMS, MAK, retail activation, or Active Directory-based activation.
Office 2010 reports these details through ospp.vbs, the Office Software Protection Platform script used to inspect and configure volume-licensed Office products, including Project and Visio installations that use the same platform. - Edition and SKU: which Office product and installation identifiers are being reported.
- Description or channel: the strongest clue to the licensing route, such as a volume KMS channel or a retail-style channel.
- Activation history: additional evidence when the description alone is not enough.
How do I check Office 2010 activation from Command Prompt?
Use an administrator Command Prompt and run the script from the folder that contains Office 2010’s files. The commands inspect the local installation and do not require a product key to be re-entered.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Microsoft requires an elevated prompt for the Office 2010 ospp.vbs checks. Without administrator rights, the script may fail to read the licensing information or return an access-related error.
2. Change to the Office14 folder
Office 2010 uses the Office14 directory. Use the path that matches the Office installation architecture:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%Microsoft OfficeOffice14"That command is for 64-bit Office 2010. For 32-bit Office 2010 installed on 64-bit Windows, use:

3. Display the installed license
At the Office14 prompt, run:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusWindows Script Host prints the licensing records that the script can find for the installed Office product. Allow the command to finish before interpreting the result; a machine with multiple editions or remnants of an earlier installation can produce more than one record.
4. List every installed Office license when necessary
If the normal output contains more than one product, or if you suspect an old edition remains installed, run:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusall/dstatus displays license information for installed product keys, while /dstatusall enumerates information for all installed licenses. Compare each record’s product name, SKU or installation identifier, status, and channel rather than assuming that the first record is the active one.
5. Preserve only the useful, safe details
Record the product or edition name, LICENSE STATUS, LICENSE DESCRIPTION or channel text, SKU and installation identifiers, and the last five product-key characters. The last five characters help you match a record to an inventory record or a key you already own. Never publish or send a complete product key; redact machine identifiers and unrelated licensing data before sharing command output.

Which lines in the output matter?
The output can be verbose, but four areas answer most troubleshooting questions. Treat the state and the channel as separate findings.

If the only clear result is Licensed, the defensible conclusion is “Office is licensed at the time of the check.” Do not label it KMS, MAK, or retail until the description, channel, or activation history supports that conclusion.
A practical reading sequence
For a repeatable diagnosis, read each record in the same order. First confirm that the product name belongs to the Office 2010 installation you intended to test. Next copy the exact status wording. Then copy the complete description or channel line, including terms such as VOLUME_KMS or RETAIL. Finally note the SKU, installation identifier, and partial key so that an administrator can distinguish this record from another edition on the same computer.
Do not combine lines from different records. A computer with a current license and a leftover, unlicensed record can show both states. Match the status, description, and partial key within one record before reaching a conclusion. If the output wraps across the console, save a transcript or enlarge the window so that a channel word is not accidentally omitted.
How can I tell whether Office 2010 uses KMS?
KMS means Key Management Service. A KMS client activates against an organization’s KMS host rather than directly against Microsoft’s consumer activation service.

A Microsoft Office 2010 KMS record commonly appears with wording similar to:

License Status: LicensedThe exact product wording can vary with the installed edition, but a VOLUME_KMS channel is the significant clue. The state line still matters: a KMS channel can be present even when the client is no longer currently licensed.
Check KMS activation history
Run:
cscript ospp.vbs /dhistorykmsThis displays KMS activation history, which can confirm that the installation has been contacting a KMS host. KMS requires access to the organization’s activation infrastructure. After a successful activation, Microsoft documents a normal 180-day licensed interval for a KMS client; the client is expected to renew periodically rather than activate once and remain permanently independent of the organization.
How can I identify a MAK license?
MAK means Multiple Activation Key. Microsoft describes MAK activation as a one-time activation through Microsoft-hosted activation services, using the internet or telephone. Unlike KMS, it is not based on repeatedly contacting an organizational KMS host.

The description or channel should be read together with the installed edition and activation history. The command most relevant to failed MAK or retail activation attempts is:
cscript ospp.vbs /dhistoryacterrThis switch shows activation-failure history for MAK and retail-style activation attempts. A failure record does not prove that every installation using the same edition is MAK; it is evidence about the specific installed record on that computer.
KMS, MAK, retail, and Active Directory compared
When more than one possible method appears in an investigation, compare the records on four axes: where activation is validated, what network or directory dependency exists, whether periodic renewal is expected, and what channel text the licensing tools display.

Active Directory-based activation is intended for domain-joined computers. Product-key information is stored and replicated in Active Directory, allowing eligible domain members to activate through the organization’s directory infrastructure. If Active Directory cannot be reached, Office can try KMS instead, so a network change can affect which route succeeds.
Because the activation method is tied to the organization’s domain environment, a generic Licensed result is not enough to identify it. Look for the product and channel details supplied by the installation and correlate them with the organization’s deployment records.
How do I recognize retail or another non-volume license?
A description containing RETAIL is a channel clue for a retail-style installation, but the word should be interpreted with the product edition and history rather than treated as a complete diagnosis. The /dhistoryacterr output groups retail and MAK activation failures, making it useful when the installation is reporting activation problems.
If the description does not clearly identify KMS, MAK, Active Directory-based activation, or a retail channel, report the channel as undetermined. That is more accurate than inferring the method from the status line or from the fact that Office opens normally.

For a KMS client, the 180-day renewal interval and the 30-day out-of-tolerance period are figures documented by Microsoft Learn as accessed in 2026. They are not a promise that every Office 2010 licensing channel follows the same timing.
These states also explain why timing matters in a support ticket. A KMS channel with an out-of-tolerance state points toward missed organizational activation access, while a retail-style channel with an activation error points toward a different route. The state tells you how urgent the symptom is; the channel tells you which owner or service should investigate it.
Can I verify the result inside Word or Excel?
Yes. Open Word, Excel, or another Office 2010 application and choose File > Account to view the licensing information exposed by the Office user interface.
The interface can lag behind a command-line activation. Microsoft specifically notes that after activation with ospp.vbs /act or the Volume Activation Management Tool, the application should be restarted before deciding that the displayed status is wrong. Close the Office application completely, reopen it, and then inspect File > Account again.
The UI is a useful cross-check for the user-facing state, while /dstatus remains the more detailed source for channel, SKU, and partial-key information.
What should I do if ospp.vbs reports an error?
Keep the exact error code. Do not replace it with a general statement such as “activation failed,” because different codes can indicate different causes.
Get Microsoft’s description of the code
From the Office14 folder, run:
cscript ospp.vbs /ddescr:<code>Replace <code> with the error code returned by the failed command. The script returns a description that can make the next troubleshooting step clearer.

The same Office licensing script can be used in remote administration scenarios, but remote checks have additional requirements. Microsoft’s guidance calls for appropriate Windows Management Instrumentation firewall access and administrator credentials on the remote computer. A local success therefore does not guarantee that a remote command will work without network and permission changes.

For a remote investigation, obtain authorization from the system owner, preserve the returned error code, and apply the same privacy precautions as for a local transcript. If those prerequisites are unavailable, ask the user to run the local elevated check and provide a redacted result.
What does Office 2010’s support status change?
Office 2010 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 13, 2020. What do the last five product-key characters actually identify?

Only when the remote-management prerequisites are configured: suitable WMI firewall access and administrator credentials are required. If those controls are not available, have someone run the elevated local command and return a redacted transcript instead.
Why does the command say Licensed but Word still shows an activation warning?
The Office application can lag behind a command-line activation or status change. Close and reopen Word or Excel, then check File > Account again. If the warning remains, save the exact command output and error details rather than relying on the user interface alone.
Is a VOLUME_KMS channel proof that activation is working right now?
It identifies the KMS channel, but current usability still comes from LICENSE STATUS. A KMS record can exist while the state is out-of-tolerance or unlicensed, so read both lines and review /dhistorykms when the status is not Licensed.
What should I report when no channel is shown?
Report that Office is licensed or unlicensed as indicated, but call the activation method undetermined. Include the edition, description text that is present, SKU or installation identifier, partial key, and any relevant history output; do not guess KMS, MAK, or retail from the status alone.
