How to Check the Current Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden and Limited List Before Building a Deck

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Check Konami’s official regional Forbidden & Limited List or the Yu-Gi-Oh! Neuron Forbidden & Limited List immediately before you finalize a deck. Confirm the displayed status or effective date, select the correct format and region, and count every copy across your Main, Extra, and Side Deck. Forbidden cards are played at zero copies, Limited cards at one total copy, and Semi-Limited cards at two total copies.

Why the official list is the first step in deck building

A deck can be legal on one date and illegal after a list update. A card may also be legal in one Yu-Gi-Oh! ruleset but restricted differently in another. Checking a recent deck profile, a store’s spreadsheet, or a search-engine result is therefore not enough for tournament preparation.

Konami describes the Forbidden & Limited List as the list that identifies cards whose use in official Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG tournaments is prohibited or limited by the number of cards with the same name allowed in a deck. The list is a rules document, not a suggestion for deck builders. The copy limits apply while you construct the complete tournament deck: Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest sequence is to identify your event’s format and region, open the live official list, read its status or effective date, and then verify every card in your proposed deck. Save that date with your deck list so another player, judge, or teammate can reproduce the check.

Which source should you trust?

Use an official Konami source whenever possible. The two practical choices are the Konami regional Forbidden & Limited List page and the Forbidden & Limited List inside the Yu-Gi-Oh! Neuron database. Both are preferable to a secondary deck site because they are maintained as rules references rather than as user-submitted deck content.

Source Best use What to verify
Konami regional Forbidden & Limited List Confirming the list that governs your geographic TCG region and an official event Region, format, categories, and displayed effective or publication date
Yu-Gi-Oh! Neuron Forbidden & Limited List Searching individual card names while checking a deck Card status, date shown by the database, and whether the result is for the TCG ruleset you are using
Event organizer or tournament judge Resolving a rule for a named tournament Any event-specific list, cutoff date, or announcement that supersedes a general reference
Deck profiles, forum posts, and social media Finding ideas, not establishing legality Never treat a post’s age or author’s statement as proof that the list is current

When two sources appear to disagree, compare four things before assuming there is an error: authority, date, format, and geography. A page that is correct for another region or another format can still be wrong for your event.

What Forbidden, Limited, and Semi-Limited mean

The category is a copy limit across the entire deck, not a limit for each individual deck area.

Status Maximum copies with the same name Where that maximum applies
Forbidden 0 Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined
Limited 1 Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined
Semi-Limited 2 Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined
Unrestricted No list-based limit Normal deck-construction rules still apply

Forbidden means no copy anywhere

If a card is Forbidden, remove it from the Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck. Leaving one in a Side Deck “just in case” still makes the deck illegal. The same rule applies to cards placed in an Extra Deck even when the strategy rarely summons them.

Limited means one total copy

A Limited card can appear once in the complete Main–Extra–Side combination. One copy in the Main Deck and one in the Side Deck is two copies, so it fails the limit even though each individual deck area contains only one.

Semi-Limited means two total copies

A Semi-Limited card can appear twice in total. Splitting the copies between the Main Deck and Side Deck does not create a separate allowance for each zone.

Unrestricted does not override other rules

An unrestricted status only means the Forbidden & Limited List does not reduce the number of copies. Minimum deck sizes, Extra Deck limits, Side Deck limits, card-text restrictions, and the event’s format rules still apply.

The complete legality-check workflow

Run this process for every tournament deck, especially when a list announcement is pending or you are buying cards for an event.

  1. Identify the play environment. Write down whether you are preparing for the TCG Advanced Format, a named regional or championship event, a casual table, a digital mode, or another sanctioned format. Do not assume that a TCG list automatically governs every Yu-Gi-Oh! product or digital game.
  2. Confirm the geography. Select the Konami regional page that covers the event’s location. If the event has its own player document, use that document and ask the organizer or head judge about any conflict.
  3. Open the live official list. Use the regional Konami page or the Forbidden & Limited List in Yu-Gi-Oh! Neuron. Locate the page’s displayed status, publication, or effective date before copying any card information.
  4. Freeze the proposed deck list. Export the list from your deck builder or write down the exact card names and quantities in the Main, Extra, and Side Deck. Include cards you plan to side in later; they count before the event begins.
  5. Search each exact card name. Use the official database rather than relying on a similar spelling, set number, artwork, or nickname. Record the result as Forbidden, Limited, Semi-Limited, or unrestricted.
  6. Calculate combined copies. Add a card’s quantity in all three zones. For a Limited card, the combined number must be one or less; for a Semi-Limited card, it must be two or less; for a Forbidden card, it must be zero.
  7. Correct the list. Remove every Forbidden card. Reduce Limited cards to one total copy and Semi-Limited cards to two total copies. Re-run the count after every change because moving a card from the Main Deck to the Side Deck does not remove it from the calculation.
  8. Check for an announcement in progress. If Konami is revealing changes in stages, do not treat an early segment, cached page, or old article as the final list. Wait for the final official update or check the live database again after publication.
  9. Record the verification date. Save the list’s displayed date, the format and region, and the final deck list in the same document. This creates an audit trail for teammates and makes a last-minute recheck faster.

How to count cards across the three deck areas

The most common checking mistake is reviewing only the Main Deck. Treat the three areas as one inventory for copy limits.

Example: a Limited card split between zones

Suppose a card is Limited and your list contains one copy in the Main Deck plus one copy in the Side Deck. The total is two, so the deck is illegal. Moving the Side Deck copy to a binder or removing it entirely brings the total back to one.

Example: an Extra Deck copy still counts

If a Limited card is an Extra Deck monster, one copy in the Extra Deck uses the complete allowance. A second copy in the Main or Side Deck would exceed the limit even though the cards serve different tactical roles.

Example: side-deck plans do not create extra copies

Side decking happens between games, but the Side Deck is registered with the tournament deck. A card cannot be both a Main Deck copy and a reserve copy beyond its list limit. Count the registered configuration before you submit the deck sheet.

Format, region, and event rules can change the answer

TCG Advanced Format is not every Yu-Gi-Oh! format

The cited Konami announcements concern the TCG Advanced Format. Do not apply those statuses automatically to a different constructed format, a local rule set, a digital mode, or a product with its own card pool and restrictions. The format named in the event information controls.

Geography matters

Konami publishes regional information, and a list for one TCG region may not be the page an event in another region uses. Check the location shown by the organizer and use the matching regional reference.

The event organizer has the final practical word

For a specific tournament, the organizer’s official player document and the head judge’s ruling control how the event is administered. If the general regional page and an event notice use different effective dates, ask before submitting a deck rather than guessing.

What changed around the October 2026 update?

Konami announced an October 2026 Forbidden & Limited List update in connection with YCS Houston. The announcement said that 34 cards would be added to the Forbidden List and eight cards to the Limited List. The reveals were split across several YCS Houston livestream segments, so information appeared in stages rather than as one complete early article.

Announcement segment Change reported by Konami How to use the information
Part 2 Seven named cards added to Forbidden; Branded Opening added to Limited Treat this as a segment of the reveal, not necessarily the final complete list
Part 3 Seven cards added to Forbidden; two Toon cards added to Limited Recheck the final database after all segments are published
Part 4 Seven cards added to Forbidden; two cards added to Limited Do not infer the remaining changes from a partial announcement

The Neuron page displayed a status update dated 21 September 2026 and, at that snapshot, listed 122 Forbidden cards, 95 Limited cards, and eight Semi-Limited cards. Those totals are dated information, not a permanent count. The October update was changing statuses, so a page showing the September totals cannot be used as proof of the final October configuration.

When an update is being revealed, recheck at three points: before buying expensive staples, after Konami posts the final update, and immediately before submitting a tournament deck. An early summary can omit later segments or preserve an old status.

Keeping a deck legal while you build and test

Separate strategy testing from legality testing

Playtesting can reveal that a card is weak, but it does not prove the card is legal. Keep a small legality column in your deck spreadsheet with the card’s current status and the date checked. Update that column when you change the region, event, or format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save a dated deck snapshot

Use a file name or note that includes the event, region, format, and official list date. Keep the submitted version separate from experimental versions so a last-minute change does not accidentally reintroduce a Forbidden card or an extra copy of a Limited card.

Recheck after every list announcement

A status change can affect both the card itself and the number of legal copies in several deck areas. Re-run the entire card-by-card process instead of checking only the cards named in a headline. A card moved from Semi-Limited to Limited, for example, requires a new combined count even if you did not change your deck.

Common failure modes and fixes

Failure Why it happens Fix
Using a months-old deck profile The profile may predate a status change Search every card on the live Konami or Neuron list and record the current date
Checking only the Main Deck Deck builders display zones separately Add quantities from Main, Extra, and Side Deck before comparing with the limit
Applying a TCG list to another mode Players assume one global ruleset Read the event or product’s format designation first
Using the wrong regional page Regional pages can have different information or timing Match the page to the event location and confirm with the organizer
Trusting a partial announcement Konami may reveal changes in multiple segments Wait for the final official update and then refresh the live database
Leaving a Forbidden card in the Side Deck The player thinks unused cards do not count Remove every copy from all three deck areas
Moving an extra copy to the Side Deck The player mistakes zones for separate allowances Recalculate the combined total; moving zones never increases the allowance
Failing to save the checked date The list changes between testing and the event Store the official date and deck snapshot with the registration information

Buying cards and using sealed products

Check legality before purchasing a playset, not only after assembling a deck. If a card is newly Forbidden or Limited, the number you can use may fall below the quantity you planned to buy. A legal deck can also require different choices in its Side or Extra Deck after a status change.

A Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Structure Deck can be a practical physical starting point. Konami’s release-events FAQ explains that official sealed-play deck construction uses cards obtained from the supplied product. That sealed-play rule concerns how the event’s deck is built; it does not remove the need to follow the format and list specified for the event. Confirm the current product, the organizer’s rules, and regional availability before relying on a particular release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A printable final check before an event

  • Event name, date, location, and organizer recorded.
  • Format identified as TCG Advanced or the specific alternative named by the event.
  • Correct regional Konami page or Neuron list opened.
  • Displayed status, publication, or effective date saved.
  • Exact card names and quantities listed for Main, Extra, and Side Deck.
  • Every card searched in the official database.
  • Forbidden cards counted at zero across all three areas.
  • Limited cards counted at one total copy or fewer.
  • Semi-Limited cards counted at two total copies or fewer.
  • Partial announcement information replaced with the final live list.
  • Deck list saved with the verification date for judges or teammates.

When to check again

Perform a full check when you first design the deck, whenever you change a card, when you move cards between Main, Extra, and Side Deck, after any Konami announcement, before buying a large quantity of a restricted card, and immediately before registration. The last check matters because the official page may have changed after your initial testing session.

If the official database is temporarily unavailable or appears inconsistent during a staged announcement, pause submission and contact the event organizer or judge. Guessing from a cached article creates a preventable legality problem.

The Bottom Line

For a legal Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG deck, use the current Konami regional list or Yu-Gi-Oh! Neuron, verify the format and region, and count copies across the Main, Extra, and Side Deck. Recheck the displayed date immediately before purchase and tournament registration, especially during a staged update.
