How to Check When New Magic: The Gathering Cards Become Legal in Each Format

By VGSources Team 10 min read

To check a new Magic: The Gathering card’s legality, identify the exact printing and three-letter set code, consult Wizards of the Coast’s live page for the format, then read that set’s official Release Notes under General Notes → Card Legality. The format page is the current permitted-set checklist; Release Notes explain exceptions for Commander products, Jumpstart, Special Guests, reprints and supplemental sets. Finally, check the current banned or restricted list and the event’s timing policy.

A card being previewed, opened, sold, or playable at a Prerelease does not automatically make it legal in every format. Legality depends on the product, printing, format, release timing and any individual restriction.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The six-step legality check

  1. Identify the exact printing. Write down the card name, set name, three-letter set code and, when relevant, collector number. A reprint can share a name with an older card while following different release-note instructions.
  2. Open the format’s current page. Standard, Pioneer and Modern pages list permitted sets. Commander, Legacy and Vintage describe broad historical pools and point to their current banned or restricted lists. These pages are live documents, so use the current version rather than an old article or deck database.
  3. Read the set’s Release Notes. Use General Notes → Card Legality. Wizards states there whether the main set, Commander cards, Jumpstart cards, Special Guests and reprints enter a format or inherit legality from another printing.
  4. Check the date and event policy. Compare the set’s release and Prerelease information with the rules for the event you intend to play. Preview season, preorder availability and opening a card early are not universal legality dates.
  5. Check bans and restrictions. A set may be legal while an individual card in it is banned or restricted. Confirm the format’s latest announcement before sanctioned play.
  6. Save the source date for disputes. Format pages can change when sets rotate or bans are updated. Release Notes remain useful for product exceptions, but a later rules or ban announcement can supersede them.

Why the set code and product type matter

Magic legality is attached to a particular printing and product treatment, not simply to a card’s English name. The same named card might appear in a premier set, a Commander deck, a Jumpstart release, a Special Guests sheet or a direct-to-Modern product. Each can have a different entry rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the three-letter code printed on the card or shown in the card database. For mixed products, also record the collector number. Release Notes often distinguish newly printed cards from reprints in the same product, and a same-name reprint can be instructed to follow the legality of an existing card rather than the surrounding set’s default.

Premier-set cards

Cards in an ordinary premier set normally use the set’s stated format list. For example, the Reality Fracture release notes state that cards coded FRA are legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern and Commander, while directing readers to the Formats hub for the complete and current list. That statement applies to the FRA cards covered by the notes; it does not automatically settle the status of a Commander insert or a Special Guests card packaged with the set.

Commander cards

Reality Fracture’s new Commander cards, coded FRC, are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. Previously printed FRC cards follow the legality of a card with the same name. This is why checking only the product name can give the wrong answer: “Reality Fracture” contains treatments with different format behavior.

Foundations and Jumpstart

Foundations cards coded FDN entered Standard, Pioneer, Modern and Commander. The Foundations-related J25 Jumpstart release notes separately state that new J25 cards numbered 1–56 entered Commander, Legacy and Vintage. Returning J25 cards follow the legality of the same card name. The collector-number range matters because not every card in the product is governed by the same rule.

Supplemental sets that skip Standard

Assassin’s Creed cards coded ACR entered Modern, Commander, Legacy and Vintage. The release notes explicitly state that those cards do not become legal in Standard or Pioneer. A card can therefore be tournament legal in several older formats while being absent from both the current and former Standard pools.

Direct-to-Modern products

Modern Horizons 3 entered Modern, Commander, Legacy and Vintage, but not Standard or Pioneer. Its Release Notes separately discuss reprints, Commander cards and Special Guests. For a card from that product, use the exact entry in the notes instead of assuming every card inherits the Modern Horizons 3 default.

How each format adds new cards

Format How new cards enter Rotation Product and restriction checks
Standard New sets are added to the live Standard pool when the format recognizes their release. Once each year, after the first premier-set Prerelease, the six oldest Standard sets rotate out. The current Standard page, accessed 2026-10-18, lists the active sets. Check whether the product is a Standard-legal premier set, then check the current banned list. A Standard deck has a 60-card minimum main deck and may use up to a 15-card sideboard.
Pioneer A set must appear on the Pioneer permitted-set list. New cards do not enter merely because they were legal in Standard. Nonrotating. Wizards describes the pool as beginning with Return to Ravnica, subject to the current permitted list and bans. Supplemental products can be excluded explicitly. Check the Pioneer page and the current banned list.
Modern Cards enter when their set is on the Modern list or when a product is explicitly designed for Modern, such as Modern Horizons. Nonrotating. New Standard sets do not remove older Modern cards. Read direct-to-Modern Release Notes for reprints, Commander cards and Special Guests, then check the Modern banned list.
Commander Cards can come from Magic’s history, including many supplemental products, but each product’s treatment and the Commander list still control. Does not rotate. The current Commander page describes a 99-card deck plus one commander. The Commander ban list can prohibit a card even when its set is acceptable.
Legacy Broad historical pool. New Commander and supplemental cards may be added directly when Release Notes or format policy allow them. Does not rotate. Check the Legacy banned list and any product-specific legality statement.
Vintage Broadest pool, including expansions and special sets, subject to the format’s list. Does not rotate. Check both the banned and restricted lists. A restricted card is limited to one copy in the main deck or sideboard.

Standard: when a new set becomes legal

Standard is the format in which set timing matters most. Wizards’ Standard page says that new Magic sets are released and added to Standard, and that once each year, after the first premier-set Prerelease, the six oldest Standard sets rotate out. Use the live set list to see which release has actually entered the pool and which six sets have left.

For a newly spoiled or opened card, verify that its set code is on that list. If the card comes from a Commander deck, a bonus sheet, Jumpstart product or Special Guests sheet, read the product’s Release Notes before treating it as Standard legal. Standard legality is not inherited by every card packaged alongside a Standard set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pioneer: Standard history is not enough

Pioneer is nonrotating. Wizards describes its starting point as Return to Ravnica forward, but the permitted-set page and banned list are the controlling references. A card that is currently in Standard can be absent from Pioneer if its product is not included, while a card from a rotated Standard set remains Pioneer legal unless a later rule or ban changes that status.

When checking a new supplemental product, look for an explicit Pioneer entry. Assassin’s Creed is the clear example: its ACR cards entered Modern and older formats but were expressly excluded from Standard and Pioneer.

Modern: distinguish ordinary sets from direct-to-Modern releases

Modern does not rotate. The Modern page lists the sets in the pool and notes that the format also accepts products designed specifically for Modern. Modern Horizons 3 entered Modern, Commander, Legacy and Vintage without entering Standard or Pioneer.

That broad product statement is only the starting point. Modern Horizons 3’s notes separately explain reprints, Commander cards and Special Guests, so check the exact card’s collector-number or set-code entry. A reprint may follow same-name legality rather than the default treatment for the surrounding product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commander: broad pool, product exceptions and a separate ban list

Commander does not rotate. The current Commander page describes a deck of 99 cards plus one commander and states that 21 combat damage from one commander causes a player to lose. The format accepts cards from Magic’s history, but that does not make every newly printed card automatically legal: Commander products, special treatments and the Commander ban list still create exceptions.

New FRC Commander cards from Reality Fracture are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage, while previously printed FRC cards follow same-name legality. This is the pattern to look for in other Commander releases: determine whether the card is new or reprinted, then apply the specific Release Notes instruction.

Legacy and Vintage: wide pools with active restrictions

Legacy and Vintage do not rotate, so a new Standard rotation does not remove cards from either format. Their pools are historical and include many supplemental products when the relevant product treatment is allowed.

Legacy legality still depends on its banned list. Vintage requires a second check because cards can be restricted rather than fully banned. The Vintage rule limits a restricted card to one copy in the main deck or sideboard. Do not confuse “legal in Vintage” with “four copies permitted.”

Release Notes: where the exceptions are documented

After opening the relevant Release Notes, search the page for Card Legality. Read the entire section, not just the first sentence. Look for these labels and instructions:

  • Main set: the default formats for newly printed cards.
  • Commander cards: cards in a Commander deck or Commander-branded subset that may enter only Commander and older formats.
  • Jumpstart cards: new cards may have a narrower list, while returning cards may follow same-name legality.
  • Special Guests: bonus cards that commonly inherit the legality of the same card name rather than the surrounding set.
  • Reprints: a card whose name already exists may use the legality of an earlier printing, depending on the notes.
  • Collector-number ranges: mixed products can assign different rules to different numbered sections.

If the notes say “follow the legality of a card with the same name,” check that name in the format’s current card pool and banned list. If the notes provide a specific set-code range, do not generalize the rule to every card in the product.

Prerelease, release day and sanctioned events

“Released” is not a universal legality answer. A Prerelease is an event with its own published policy, and a card may be playable there under that event’s rules before the same card is legal in a different sanctioned format. Conversely, a card previewed online or available for preorder is not automatically playable in a tournament.

  1. Find the set’s official release and Prerelease dates.
  2. Read the event organizer’s format and card-pool policy.
  3. Confirm that the card’s product treatment is covered by the event’s rules.
  4. For a constructed event after release, verify the live format page and current banned or restricted list on the day you play.

When a store announces “new-set play,” ask whether it means a Prerelease, a casual event, a sanctioned Standard tournament or another format. Those labels can have different effective dates.

Common mistakes and how to resolve them

“The card is in a Standard set, so it must be Pioneer legal.”

Not necessarily. Pioneer uses its own permitted-set list. Check that list directly; Standard legality does not transfer automatically.

“The product is called Modern Horizons, so every card is Modern legal.”

Use the product’s Release Notes. Reprints, Commander cards and Special Guests can have separate instructions, and the exact collector number may matter.

“A card appeared in a Commander deck, so it is Commander legal.”

Check the Commander list and the card’s treatment. Commander accepts a broad historical pool, but individual cards can be banned, and a reprint can follow same-name legality rather than the product default.

“The card was legal last season, so it is still legal now.”

That assumption fails in Standard because six oldest sets rotate once each year after the first premier-set Prerelease. Recheck the current Standard page after every annual rotation.

“The card is legal in Vintage, so I can play four copies.”

Vintage has both banned and restricted cards. A restricted card is limited to one copy in the main deck or sideboard.

“A card database says legal, so the event must allow it.”

Databases can lag behind a ban announcement, rotation or event-specific policy. Use them as a convenience, then confirm against the live format page, Release Notes and event announcement.

A printable decision checklist

  • Card name recorded exactly.
  • Three-letter set code recorded.
  • Collector number checked when the product mixes treatments.
  • Format’s current permitted-set page consulted.
  • Set Release Notes opened at General Notes → Card Legality.
  • Main-set, Commander, Jumpstart, Special Guests and reprint instructions separated.
  • Release or Prerelease date compared with the event policy.
  • Current banned list checked.
  • Vintage restricted list checked when relevant.
  • Source date saved if the legality is disputed.

What to do when sources disagree

Prefer the newest official rule. Start with the live format page for the current set list and restrictions, then use the product’s Release Notes to resolve treatment-specific questions. If a later banned-and-restricted announcement changes an individual card, that announcement controls over an older Release Notes statement. For an event happening immediately, ask the organizer to confirm the policy in writing and keep the relevant page or announcement date.

This process answers the practical question for any new printing: identify the code, verify the format’s current pool, read the product exception notes, confirm timing, and check bans or restrictions. No single “release date” label replaces all five checks.
