Check the offer on the PS5 itself before you buy. Sign in with the PlayStation account that will own the game, open the title’s PS5 page or game hub in the PlayStation Store, and select Upgrade offer. The screen tells you whether the upgrade is free, requires payment, or is available only for a limited time. That title-specific message—not the fact that a PS4 listing is discounted—is the authoritative answer for your account and region.
The same check also exposes the conditions that can invalidate an apparently cheap purchase: a disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive and the disc must remain inserted, a disc’s country or region must match your account, and a game claimed through PlayStation Plus is normally excluded unless Sony explicitly says otherwise.

What the discounted PS4 label does—and does not—tell you
A sale price on a PS4 listing only describes the PS4 edition. It does not guarantee access to the PS5 edition. Sony supports upgrades for “certain” PS4 games, and the rules differ by title. For one game, the PS5 version may download at no extra cost; for another, the store may offer a paid upgrade; a third may have an offer that expires after a stated date. Some titles have no PS5 upgrade at all.

Because eligibility is title-specific, do not rely on a retailer description, a sale badge, a box statement, or a search result that merely mentions PS5. Open the PS5 version’s own store page while signed in to the account that will own the game. The upgrade card displays the entitlement and the current charge for that account and region.

Before you check: identify the ownership and hardware you will use
The verification screen can only give a useful answer when you check with the same ownership setup you intend to use. Determine which of these situations applies before opening the store.

For a physical copy, also read the small-print region information on the disc or its packaging. The disc’s country or region must match the country or region on your PlayStation account for the upgrade entitlement to work.
How to verify a digital PS4 purchase on PS5
- Sign in to the owning account. On the PS5, use the PlayStation Network account that will retain the game. Checking while signed in to a different family member’s account can show a different entitlement or price.
- Find the PS5 edition. Open PlayStation Store, use Search if necessary, and select the result identified as the PS5 version. From the title’s game hub, look for the upgrade option rather than choosing the PS4 edition’s sale tile.
- Select “Upgrade offer.” This is the decisive screen. Sony’s support guidance says the offer may be free, may require a purchase, or may be available for only a limited time.
- Read every condition before confirming. A free offer should lead to a Download control. A paid offer shows the amount required for that account and region. If an end date or other restriction is shown, treat it as part of the purchase decision.
- Check the edition name. Confirm that the product you are about to download is the PS5 version and not the PS4 application running through backward compatibility. The game hub can list both versions, so inspect the platform label before downloading.
- Decide whether the combined cost works. If the upgrade is paid, add that fee to the discounted PS4 price and compare the total with the standalone PS5 edition shown in the store. The lower PS4 sticker price is not necessarily the lower route to the PS5 edition.
If the page presents no upgrade offer, do not assume that one will appear after checkout. Treat the absence of an offer as a signal to investigate the title’s edition details or buy the PS5 edition directly if that is the version you need.
How to verify a physical PS4 disc
- Confirm the console has a disc drive. Sony states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. A disc-based upgrade therefore requires a PS5 model with a functioning drive.
- Insert the eligible disc first. Put the PS4 disc in the console before opening the title’s PS5 page. The disc acts as proof of ownership for the upgrade check.
- Open the PS5 game hub. In PlayStation Store or Search, select the PS5 version of the same title. With the disc recognized, choose Upgrade offer when it appears.
- Review the displayed price and terms. The offer can be free, paid, or time-limited. Continue only when the wording matches the version and conditions you intend to accept.
- Check the disc’s region against the account. Sony requires the disc country or region to match the PlayStation account for this entitlement. A disc imported from another market can therefore fail the upgrade check even when the title name is identical.
- Download and keep the disc available. After installing the PS5 version, leave the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play. The downloaded application does not turn the disc purchase into a disc-free digital license.
If your console has no drive, the physical route stops at the first requirement. You would need a digital entitlement instead; inserting or registering the disc is not possible on a PS5 Digital Edition.
How to read the three kinds of upgrade offer
Free upgrade
A free upgrade is shown as an offer with no additional charge and normally provides a Download action. “Free” refers to the upgrade transaction; you still need the qualifying PS4 ownership identified by the store. For a disc owner, that means the matching disc remains the license check at launch.
Paid upgrade
A paid upgrade displays a purchase amount before download. Calculate the complete cost as discounted PS4 price + upgrade fee, then compare that figure with the PS5 edition’s current price. The result can change during a sale, so record the amount shown at the moment you check rather than relying on an older deal post.
Limited-time offer
A limited-time offer includes a deadline or other time restriction in the store message. The ability to buy the PS4 version today does not preserve the upgrade price indefinitely. If you need the PS5 edition, make the upgrade purchase while the displayed terms are still valid, and keep a note of the date shown on screen.

This comparison is especially important when the PS4 discount is deep but the upgrade fee is substantial, or when a short-lived upgrade promotion is about to end. The store’s upgrade card supplies the only current amount you should use in the calculation.

A game obtained as a PlayStation Plus benefit is not the same as a purchased PS4 license for upgrade purposes. Sony says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless otherwise indicated. Do not infer eligibility from the fact that the game appears in your library or can be downloaded while your subscription is active.
Open the PS5 game hub while signed in to the account that redeemed the benefit and read the offer wording. If the store does not explicitly grant an upgrade, buying or downloading the PS4 Plus version will not create one. If Sony marks a particular Plus title as an exception, follow the conditions shown on that title’s upgrade screen.

“The PS4 version is on sale, but I only own a PS5 Digital Edition.”
A digital PS4 purchase can still be checked through the PS5 game hub. A physical PS4 sale cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition because the console cannot read the disc. Before paying for a disc, verify that the product is digital or that your PS5 has a drive.
“The PS4 disc is cheap in another country.”
Do not assume that identical packaging creates identical upgrade rights. The disc country or region must match the PlayStation account. If it does not, the upgrade may not be offered even though the title and disc format appear compatible.
“I bought the PS4 version years ago and now see a PS5 listing.”
Open the PS5 listing while signed in to the original purchasing account. The game hub will identify whether that account receives a free upgrade, a paid offer, or no offer. A historical purchase alone is not proof that every version is included.
“The store shows a PS5 game, but there is no upgrade button.”
First confirm that you selected the PS5 product, not a PS4 listing, and that the correct account is active. For a disc, insert the disc before checking. If the account owns the game through PlayStation Plus, apply the separate Plus rule. If no offer appears after those checks, the title may not support an upgrade for that entitlement.
Troubleshooting a missing or unexpected offer
- Wrong account: Sign out or switch users and return to the account that purchased or redeemed the PS4 game.
- Wrong product page: Use Search to open the PS5 version and then enter its game hub. A PS4 page may not expose the PS5 upgrade control.
- Disc not detected: Eject and reinsert the eligible PS4 disc, then reopen the game hub. A Digital Edition console cannot perform this check.
- Region mismatch: Compare the disc’s country or region with the account’s country or region. Matching the title name is not enough.
- Plus entitlement: If the game was redeemed through PlayStation Plus, look for an explicit exception. Otherwise, Sony’s stated rule excludes it.
- Offer expired: Read the date or restriction on the upgrade card. A past promotion cannot be inferred from an old screenshot or sale article.
- Unexpected charge: Stop before confirming payment and reread the product name, edition, and displayed amount. The upgrade fee is separate from the PS4 purchase price.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Am I signed in to the account that will own the game?
- Am I viewing the PS5 version’s game hub rather than only the PS4 sale listing?
- Does the page show Upgrade offer?
- Is the result clearly free, paid, or time-limited?
- If payment is required, have I added the upgrade fee to the PS4 sale price?
- If I am using a disc, does my PS5 have a drive?
- Does the disc region match my account region?
- Have I accounted for the need to keep the disc inserted after downloading?
- Did the game come from PlayStation Plus, and does Sony explicitly permit an upgrade?
Only proceed when the answer on the PS5 upgrade screen matches your ownership method, hardware, region, and budget. That check prevents the most common mistake: buying a discounted PS4 listing that does not deliver the PS5 version you expected.
