How to Check Whether a Game’s Assets or Code Were Made With AI

To check whether a game used AI, start with the game’s current store-page disclosure, copy its exact wording and the date you checked, then corroborate it with developer statements, credits, production records and supported provenance checks. Treat every result as scoped evidence: a disclosure is the developer’s account, not an independent audit; a detector score or visual oddity is not proof; and a finished executable rarely reveals whether AI assisted its code. Keep pre-generated development content separate from material generated while the game runs, name the asset category involved, and report a confidence level that matches what you can actually verify.

What can you actually establish about a game’s AI use?

You can often establish that a developer publicly disclosed a particular use, that a supported provenance signal is present on an original file, or that independent production records corroborate a claim. You usually cannot prove that every asset, edit or code change in a game was made by or without AI. The practical goal is a documented, narrowly worded finding rather than a blanket label such as “AI-made game.”

Evidence What it can support What it cannot establish by itself
Current store-page disclosure The developer’s stated use, such as pre-generated art or live-generated dialogue, and the category named. A complete inventory of every shipped file, an independent audit, or the absence of undisclosed use.
Developer statement, credits or production record Details about tools, contributors, selection, editing and whether assisted code reached a release build, when the record is specific. Claims outside the record’s scope or a full history when the developer has not published one.
Signed provenance or watermark signal That a supported issuer or service signal is attached to the file or detected in it. The prompt, every editor, a complete edit history, the identity of an individual creator or legal status.
Detector score Only that the checked service found or did not find a signal within its supported coverage. Definitive authorship, human creation, or use of another provider’s model.
Visual or audio irregularity A reason to ask for records or inspect the original asset. Proof of AI generation; procedural tools, stock material and post-production can look similar.

Keep the scope visible in every note: which game, platform, edition, build or asset you checked; when you checked it; and whether the evidence concerns art, sound, writing, localization, interface material, marketing, runtime generation or code assistance.

How do I check a game’s Steam disclosure?

Open the game’s current Steam store page, search the page text for “AI,” “generative” or “Generated,” and preserve the complete statement exactly as shown. Record the date and the page’s wording before interpreting it. Valve’s disclosure categories distinguish pre-generated content made during development from content generated while the game runs, but the game-specific statement determines what the developer is claiming.

  1. Open the current listing. Use the store page for the exact title and edition you are investigating. A sequel, demo, early-access branch or console version can have a different statement.
  2. Search the page text. Search for “AI,” “generative” and “Generated,” including capitalization variants. Read the surrounding paragraph, not just the matching word, because the scope may be limited to a named asset class.
  3. Copy the exact wording. Preserve punctuation, qualifiers and whether the statement says content was generated before release or during play. Do not rewrite “some background images” as “the game’s art.”
  4. Record the date and build context. Note the date checked, the store edition, and any visible early-access or update information. Store pages and disclosures can change.
  5. Compare later changes. Check patch notes and update announcements for additions that could explain a newly added disclosure. A later statement may describe a feature introduced after the original release rather than the original asset set.

Silence is not a clean negative. If the page contains no relevant statement, write “no confirmed public disclosure found as of [date checked]” and state the search terms and page scope. Do not convert an absent disclosure into “the game used no AI.” A statement can also be incomplete or limited to the categories the developer chose to report.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated content?

Pre-generated content is produced during development and shipped as files; live-generated content is created while the game runs, potentially in response to player actions. These uses expose players to different risks and should never be collapsed into one “AI use” label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-generated material

This can include artwork, textures, animation, sound effects, voices, music, writing, localization or interface assets created before release. Ask which files were generated, which tool was used, and what human selection, editing or integration occurred. A disclosure about one background image category does not establish AI use in character art, dialogue or code.

Runtime generation

Live systems can generate dialogue, images, quests, voices or other player-facing content while the program is running. Record whether the generation is always active, optional, limited to a mode, or supplied through an online service. A game that ships a few generated textures is not equivalent to one that creates dialogue interactively for every player.

Other categories that need separate entries

  • Art and visual effects
  • Voices, music and other sound
  • Narrative, dialogue and localization
  • Interface assets and marketing material
  • Code assistance during development
  • Player-facing runtime generation

Steam’s category language helps organize your notes; it does not independently verify a particular game’s statement. Attribute the claim to the game’s own disclosure and corroborating records.

How can developer records corroborate a disclosure?

Look for a developer or publisher statement, credits, production diary, tool disclosure, asset list, build note or postmortem that connects the claimed use to material in the released product. A useful record identifies what was generated, what humans changed, and whether the output actually shipped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to ask about art and media

  • Which shipped file, scene or asset used AI?
  • Which tool or model produced the initial output?
  • Who selected, edited, composited, voiced or approved it?
  • Was the output generated once during development or on demand for players?
  • What licensing, training-data or permission records apply?
  • Does the credit identify human contributors and their roles?

Questions to ask about code

  • Was AI used for brainstorming, autocomplete, refactoring, testing or generated code?
  • Did assisted code enter the released build, or was it discarded?
  • Which repository revision, pull request or build note links the assistance to shipped code?
  • What human review, testing and licensing checks were applied?

Not every studio publishes these records. An unanswered question is an unresolved scope, not evidence that the use did or did not occur. Distinguish a direct statement (“the developer says generated dialogue is enabled in this mode”) from an inference (“the style resembles an image model”).

How do C2PA, Content Credentials and watermarks help?

Use provenance checks on the original file when possible. C2PA Content Credentials can attach signed metadata describing origin and edits when the file, tools and viewer support the standard. Microsoft describes its service as checking supported Microsoft provenance, including C2PA manifests and Microsoft watermark signals. OpenAI documents checks for supported C2PA and SynthID signals. These services identify only the signals they support; they are not universal AI detectors.

  1. Obtain the original. Prefer the asset exported by the developer or extracted without a screenshot, social-media recompression or intervening editor. Keep a copy before inspecting it.
  2. Run a supported checker. Use a service that explicitly states which provenance formats or watermark systems it recognizes. Record the service name, date and result.
  3. Read the issuer and signal. A result may identify a C2PA signer or a watermark signal, not a prompt, model, person or complete edit history.
  4. Compare with production records. A technical signal is stronger when the developer’s statement and file history describe the same asset and timeframe.
  5. Preserve the result. Save the original file hash or filename, the checker’s output and the date so another person can reproduce the check.

Metadata can be removed, and screenshots, cropping, compression or re-encoding can weaken or erase a signal. A negative result means only that the checker did not identify a signal within its supported coverage. It does not prove human creation or rule out a model from another provider.

Can visual clues or an AI detector prove an asset was made with AI?

No. Distorted lettering, anatomy errors, inconsistent shadows, repeated patterns or an unusual voice can justify a closer look, but they are not authorship proof. Procedural generation, stock assets, intentional stylization, audio processing and ordinary post-production can produce similar artifacts.

Use appearance as a lead

Save the exact frame, texture, audio clip or promotional image that raised the question. Describe the observable feature without declaring a cause, then seek the original file and a production record. “The lettering is inconsistent” is a checkable observation; “an image model made it” is an unsupported conclusion unless records corroborate it.

Interpret detector results narrowly

Microsoft warns that its service does not identify all AI-generated content or guarantee attribution. OpenAI’s documented checker is limited to supported signals and does not detect every other provider’s output. A negative result therefore means “no supported signal found,” not “human-made.” Multiple detector scores are not automatically independent confirmation when the services rely on similar signals or have the same blind spots.

Document what was tested

  • File or media segment checked
  • Original or re-encoded copy
  • Service and supported signal type
  • Date and result wording
  • Independent records that agree or conflict

How can I tell whether AI assisted a game’s code?

There is no reliable way in this evidence base to identify AI assistance merely by examining a finished executable, gameplay feel or coding style. Look for a developer statement, repository history, postmortem or build documentation that connects assistance to code in the released product.

Start with a direct statement

Search official developer communications, technical blogs, credits and postmortems for a description of AI-assisted coding. Record whether the statement concerns experimentation, internal tooling, test generation, autocomplete or code that shipped. “We used an assistant during development” does not by itself show that generated code reached the final build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trace the shipped build

When a public repository or build note exists, look for revision identifiers, pull requests or release tags that connect assisted changes to the version players received. A repository may omit private branches, generated files or vendor code, so state what the record covers. If no traceable record is public, report the code-use question as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from style.

Keep code separate from other AI claims

AI-assisted code does not imply AI-generated art, writing or voices. Conversely, a game can disclose generated art while giving no information about its programming workflow. Record each category independently.

How should I report confidence without overstating the evidence?

Use a label that tells readers exactly how far the evidence goes. Put the label next to the claim, not in a distant conclusion.

Label Use it when Example wording
Confirmed by direct disclosure The current store page or an official production record explicitly names the use and category. “The developer’s store disclosure says pre-generated background art was used; checked on 25 October 2026.”
Corroborated A direct statement aligns with an independent record, supported provenance signal or file history. “The disclosure and the signed asset record identify the same shipped texture.”
Plausible Observations or partial records point toward a possibility, but the specific use is not documented. “The visual pattern warrants follow-up, but no production record confirms its origin.”
Unconfirmed Evidence consists only of a detector result, visual clue, rumor or an incomplete statement. “No public record confirms AI assistance for the released code.”
No confirmed public disclosure The scoped store-page and official-source search found no statement as of a named date. “No confirmed public disclosure found on the current listing as of 25 October 2026.”

For each finding, separate four fields: what the developer disclosed, what a supported technical signal showed, what independent records support, and what remains unknown. If several records align but the exact asset scope is unclear, preserve that limitation in the sentence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do I compare AI use between two games fairly?

Use the same date range and the same evidence categories for both games. A comparison is meaningful only when it distinguishes a disclosed background asset from interactive generation or code assistance.

Comparison axis Record for each game
Where AI appears Named art, sound or voice, writing, localization, interface, code workflow, marketing or runtime generation.
When generation happens During development, at runtime or both.
Player exposure Content shipped in the game, shown in store or marketing material, or generated interactively.
Transparency Exact disclosure wording, date checked, named tools or assets and later changes.
Provenance and rights Named human contributors, available source records, licenses and voice or likeness consent where relevant.
Confidence Directly stated, independently corroborated, plausible or unconfirmed.

Do not rank the games by a single detector score. Compare the scope and quality of their documentation instead. A game with a narrow, dated disclosure may be more transparent than one with no statement even if both contain visually similar material.

  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

What should I recheck after a patch or content update?

Repeat the store-page search and supported provenance checks after a material update. Disclosures, asset files and runtime features can change, so an earlier note describes only the state you checked then.

  1. Save the new store-page wording and date.
  2. Compare it with the previous wording for added categories or changed qualifiers.
  3. Read patch notes for new generated content, modes or online features.
  4. Recheck representative original files rather than assuming the old provenance result still applies.
  5. Update the confidence label and identify which build or edition the finding covers.

Keep old records instead of overwriting them. A dated history lets readers see whether a disclosure refers to the original release, an expansion, an early-access period or a later feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a defensible final write-up?

A concise report can be more useful than a dramatic verdict when it makes its boundaries explicit. Identify the title and version, the date checked, the exact statement, the asset or code category, the corroborating material, the tools and files examined, and the unresolved questions.

  • Scope: platform, edition, build and date.
  • Direct evidence: exact developer wording and any official record.
  • Technical evidence: original file, supported provenance format or watermark result.
  • Independent support: credits, repository history, postmortem or build note.
  • Limits: missing records, changed files, unsupported providers or erased metadata.
  • Confidence: confirmed, corroborated, plausible, unconfirmed or no confirmed public disclosure.

Conclude only at the level the evidence supports. “The developer disclosed pre-generated art” is precise. “The entire game was made by AI” is a much broader claim that these checks cannot establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check AI use in a game that is not on Steam?

Yes, but you lose Steam’s standardized disclosure location. Search the developer’s official site, credits, technical posts, patch notes and support documentation, and identify the platform and edition you checked; absence of a statement still does not prove absence of AI use.

Does a C2PA credential prove that an AI model made the whole asset?

No. A credential records a supported, signed provenance event and may describe an issuer or edit operation. It does not by itself reveal every contributor, prompt, model, later edit or legal status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can game files reveal whether code was generated by an AI assistant?

Usually not from the compiled files alone. A traceable developer record, repository history or build document is needed to connect assistance to code that shipped; coding style and gameplay behavior are insufficient.

What should I do if a developer changes its AI disclosure?

Preserve both versions with their dates and identify the update or build each one describes. Report the change as part of the game’s evolving production record rather than silently replacing the earlier finding.
