How to Check Whether a Magic Card Is Legal in Planar Standard

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick answer: A card is legal in Planar Standard when at least one printing of that card appears in a currently legal Planar Standard set and the card is not on the format’s ban list. The current pool is Foundations (FDN) plus DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, and FRA. Because Planar Standard uses a name-based reprint rule, you may play an older printing when a newer printing of the same card is in a legal set. The reliable process is to find every printing in Gatherer, compare those printings with the Planar Standard set list, check the ban list, and then run the complete deck through the format’s paste-in checker.

The four checks that decide legality

Use these checks in order for a single card:

  1. Identify the card name. Read the card’s English name, including punctuation and any alternate name treatment.
  2. Find all printings. Search the card in Gatherer, which Wizards of the Coast describes as its official Magic card database and recommends for browsing cards and checking specific rulings.
  3. Compare the printings with the current Planar Standard pool. One qualifying printing is enough under Planar Standard’s reprint rule.
  4. Check the ban list. A card in a legal set is still illegal if the format separately bans it.

This process answers card legality. A deck must also meet Planar Standard’s construction limits, so use the format checker after you finish the card-by-card review.

Which sets are legal in Planar Standard?

The current Planar Standard rules page (accessed in 2026) lists seven sets: one Core set and six rotating sets. The set codes below are the identifiers to match when you inspect a card’s printings.

Set code Role in the current pool What to do when checking a printing
FDN Foundations, the Core set A printing from Foundations qualifies the card for Planar Standard unless the card is banned.
DFT Rotating set A printing with this set code qualifies while the set remains in the current pool.
TDM Rotating set Match this code in the printing list.
EOE Rotating set Match this code in the printing list.
ECL Rotating set Match this code in the printing list.
SOS Rotating set Match this code in the printing list.
FRA Rotating set Match this code in the printing list.

A set code outside this seven-set pool does not qualify by itself. The physical age, frame, artwork, foil treatment, language, or rarity of the card does not create legality; the relevant question is whether that card name has a printing in one of the legal sets.

How the reprint rule makes older cards legal

Planar Standard’s format rules state: “A card is legal if any printing of it is in a legal set, and then any printing of it may be played.” In practice, legality attaches to the card name after one printing qualifies.

Example: Llanowar Elves

The Planar Standard rules page uses Llanowar Elves as its example. An M19 printing can be played because Llanowar Elves also appears in Foundations. You do not need to own or use the Foundations version; the older printing is allowed by the format’s reprint rule.

What the rule does not mean

A card is not legal merely because it resembles a card in a legal set, has the same color or type, or was once legal in an earlier season. The card name must match a qualifying printing. A mechanically different card, a card with a different name, or a card whose last qualifying printing rotated out does not inherit legality.

When a card has multiple names or special treatments, search the exact card name in Gatherer and inspect the listed printings rather than relying on the expansion symbol on one copy. The set symbol on the copy in your hand can prove that particular printing exists, but it cannot by itself tell you whether the name has another qualifying printing.

Step-by-step: checking one card in Gatherer

  1. Open Gatherer and search the card name. Use the card’s name as printed. If the search returns several similarly named cards, confirm the mana cost, type line, and rules text.
  2. Open the card’s printing information. Record every set code shown for that exact card name. Do not stop at the first result if the card has been reprinted.
  3. Compare the codes with the Planar Standard list. Mark the card as set-qualified if at least one printing is from FDN, DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, or FRA.
  4. Check the ban list. If the card appears there, it remains illegal even when one of its printings is in a legal set.
  5. Record the result for your deck list. Keep the card name, the qualifying set code, and any ban-list note together so you can diagnose a checker error later.

Gatherer is a database and rulings reference, not the Planar Standard rulebook. It can show that a card was printed in a particular set, but the Planar Standard rules page determines whether that set is currently in the format and whether a ban applies.

The current Planar Standard ban list

The current Planar Standard rules page lists Cori-Steel Cutter as banned. A legal-set printing does not override a format ban. If your deck contains Cori-Steel Cutter, remove it even if Gatherer shows a printing in one of the seven legal sets.

Ban lists can change independently of set rotation. Before submitting a deck for an event or relying on an old legality note, open the current Planar Standard rules page and read its live ban section. Do not substitute a ban announcement for another format or an old screenshot for the current list.

Checking an entire deck with the Planar Standard checker

The Planar Standard rules page provides a paste-in card-list checker and says that no account is required. It is the fastest way to catch both card-level and deck-construction problems.

Prepare a clean list

  • Put one card name and quantity on each line in the format accepted by the checker.
  • Separate the maindeck and sideboard using the checker’s expected section labels or the exact list format it displays.
  • Use the card’s official name, including punctuation. Avoid personal abbreviations, set names in the card-name field, or collection notes.

Run the check

  1. Open the Planar Standard rules page.
  2. Choose its card-list or deck checker.
  3. Paste the complete maindeck and sideboard list into the input box.
  4. Submit the list and read every legality and construction message, not just the first error.
  5. Correct the list, paste it again, and repeat until no card or construction error remains.

Construction limits the checker must enforce

Deck area Requirement
Maindeck At least 60 cards
Sideboard No more than 15 cards
Copies No more than four copies of a card name across maindeck and sideboard
Basic lands Exempt from the four-copy limit

The four-copy limit is by card name, not by artwork, frame, language, or set. Four copies of one printing plus four copies of an older printing still count as eight copies of the same card name and therefore exceed the limit. Basic lands are the stated exception.

Why a Planar Standard checker may reject a card or deck

The card is from a set outside the seven-set pool

If no printing of the card is in FDN, DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, or FRA, the card is not set-qualified. A card that was legal in a previous Planar Standard season does not stay legal automatically after rotation.

You checked the wrong format

Planar Standard has its own set list, rotation schedule, ban list, and checker. The official Wizards Standard list is a different authority. Confirm that the page and checker explicitly identify Planar Standard before interpreting an error.

The card is banned

Remove Cori-Steel Cutter when the checker identifies it. Searching for an eligible reprint will not resolve a ban error because bans apply separately from set eligibility.

The name or section format is malformed

Correct spelling, punctuation, quantities, and the maindeck/sideboard separation. If a card has alternate versions, use the exact card name that Gatherer recognizes. A database search can distinguish similarly named cards that a manually typed list may conflate.

The list violates a deck limit

  • Add cards until the maindeck reaches 60 cards.
  • Trim the sideboard to 15 cards or fewer.
  • Count copies by card name across both sections; replace excess copies or move them out of the list.
  • Apply the four-copy exception only to basic lands.

Fixing a deck-size error does not make an illegal card legal, and replacing an illegal card does not repair an over-limit sideboard. Treat each message as a separate correction.

Planar Standard rotation: why yesterday’s answer can change

Rotation follows the first Universes Within set release of each year. When that release occurs, the previous year’s Universes Within sets leave the rotating portion of Planar Standard. Foundations remains the Core set listed in the current pool, while the six rotating codes are subject to this yearly process.

This rule means a legality answer needs a time qualifier. A card can be legal immediately after a qualifying set release and become illegal when that set rotates, even if the card’s physical printing has not changed. Conversely, a new reprint can make an older copy legal without changing the older card’s appearance.

For a date-sensitive decision, read the current Planar Standard set list and rotation notice together. Do not infer the next rotation from the release date of a non-Universes Within product or from the rotation schedule of Wizards-sanctioned Standard.

Planar Standard versus Wizards-sanctioned Standard

Wizards’ Magic Tournament Rules (MTR) govern sanctioned Standard, not Planar Standard. The MTR section effective February 27, 2026, says: “Any cards with expansion symbols from the above sets are legal to play in Standard, even if they are not available in that set’s play booster (or draft booster for sets released before February 2, 2024).” It also allows older cards that share a name with a Standard-legal card.

Those principles are useful context for understanding reprints, but they do not replace Planar Standard’s own rules page. Planar Standard’s current pool is the seven codes listed above, and its current ban entry is Cori-Steel Cutter. Wizards’ October 12, 2026 announcement reported no changes to sanctioned Standard and described that format’s post-August environment; it is not a Planar Standard update. Likewise, Wizards’ August 10, 2026 sanctioned-Standard announcement listed Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser’s Talent, and Gran-Gran as Standard bans. Those names should not be imported into Planar Standard’s ban list.

A practical decision worksheet

For a paper deck, spreadsheet, or tournament submission, make one row per card name and fill in these fields:

Field Entry to record
Card name The exact name used in the deck list
Printings found Every set code shown for that card in Gatherer
Qualifying code One of FDN, DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, or FRA, if present
Ban check “Clear” or the specific ban entry
Deck count Total copies in maindeck plus sideboard

A row with no qualifying code is not legal. A row marked with a ban is not legal. Rows that pass those tests still have to fit the 60-card, 15-card, and four-copy construction rules. This worksheet is especially useful when a list mixes current and older physical printings.

Fast answers to common edge cases

“I own an old copy. Can I use it?”

Yes, if the card name has any printing in the current Planar Standard pool and the name is not banned. The reprint rule allows any printing of that name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The card database shows a legal printing, but the checker rejects my list. Which result wins?”

Check the error message and the current Planar Standard ban list first. A database establishes printings; the Planar Standard page establishes the live pool, bans, and deck limits. A card can pass the printing test and still fail because it is banned or because the deck breaks a construction rule.

“Does a legal set symbol guarantee the whole deck is legal?”

No. Every card name must pass the set-and-ban test, and the complete list must meet the maindeck minimum, sideboard maximum, and copy limit.

“Can I use the Wizards Standard list instead?”

No. Use it only when the event is Wizards-sanctioned Standard. For Planar Standard, use the Planar Standard rules page and its checker.

The reliable final check before you play

  1. Search each card name in Gatherer and note all printings.
  2. Confirm at least one printing belongs to the seven current Planar Standard sets.
  3. Read the live Planar Standard ban list and remove any banned name.
  4. Paste the full list into the no-account checker.
  5. Verify at least 60 maindeck cards, no more than 15 sideboard cards, and no more than four copies of any non-basic-land card name across both sections.
  6. Recheck the page after a rotation or ban announcement, because legality is date-sensitive.

If all six checks pass, the card names and deck construction satisfy the current Planar Standard rules. Keep the date of your last check with the deck list so an older legality decision is not mistaken for a current one.
