Nintendo Switch 2 Storage Explained: microSD Express Cards, Game Sizes, and What Fits

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Short answer: Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal UFS storage, although some of that space is reserved for system use. Its expansion slot accepts microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Downloaded games, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured videos can use the card; game save data remains in system memory.

No individual game currently requires a microSD Express card to play, but available space differs by title and edition. Check the current Nintendo eShop listing or the physical package before buying or downloading.

Nintendo Switch 2 storage at a glance

  • Internal storage: 256 GB of UFS storage, with a portion reserved for the operating system and other system data. The advertised capacity is not the same as free space.
  • Expansion standard: microSD Express only. Ordinary microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards from the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games.
  • Maximum supported card: up to 2 TB, provided the card meets the microSD Express standard.
  • What the card can hold: downloaded software, software updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video.
  • What it cannot hold: game save data. Saves remain in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD Express card.
  • Requirement for games: Nintendo’s current FAQ says no individual game requires additional storage to play, although a title may need substantial free space for a download, update, DLC, or game-key-card installation.

These rules come from Nintendo’s current microSD Express Card FAQ, the Switch 2 technical specifications, and Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ.

How Switch 2 divides its storage

Think of the console as having two storage locations: built-in system memory and an optional microSD Express card. When a compatible card is inserted, Nintendo says downloaded software uses the card as the default save location. You can still manage content between the two locations where Nintendo permits it.

Content Storage location Important limitation
Downloaded games System memory or microSD Express A microSD Express card becomes the default location for downloaded software when inserted.
Game updates and DLC System memory or microSD Express They contribute to the title’s total storage footprint.
Screenshots and captured video System memory or microSD Express Captures can be moved between system memory and the card.
Game save data System memory Saves cannot be copied or saved to the microSD Express card.
Game-key-card data Downloaded to system memory or microSD Express The key card is not the complete game; the console must download the software.

Nintendo lists 256 GB as the console’s internal capacity, but explicitly notes that some space is reserved for system use. For a real-time figure, open System Settings → Data Management and use the free-space figure shown there. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ provides the relevant storage-management guidance.

Why a normal microSD card will not work for Switch 2 games

The card standard changed from the original Switch generation. Switch 2 requires a card that conforms to microSD Express. A regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card may have worked in an original Switch, but it cannot be used to save or load Switch 2 digital games or their save data.

Nintendo does allow a legacy Switch card to be used for importing screenshots and videos. That is a media-transfer exception, not backward-compatible game storage. Do not buy a conventional card expecting it to expand the Switch 2 game library; confirm the product description says microSD Express.

Compatibility details are in Nintendo’s card-compatibility support page. The card is sold separately, and Nintendo does not identify one universally best capacity or model.

Do you actually need a microSD Express card?

Not necessarily. Nintendo’s current answer to “Are there games that require a microSD Express card?” is no: no individual game currently requires additional storage to play. That means the console’s internal memory is sufficient to start playing any current title, assuming you have the free space needed for that particular download or installation.

An expansion card becomes more useful when your habits create a larger storage footprint:

  • You buy most games digitally and keep them installed.
  • You purchase game-key-card releases, which require a full software download despite including a physical key card.
  • You regularly install large updates or DLC.
  • You capture a lot of video or keep a large screenshot library.
  • You want to avoid repeatedly deleting and redownloading software as your library grows.

A player who buys mostly physical releases, downloads only a few games, and rarely captures video may be comfortable using internal storage for now. That is a practical planning judgment, not an official Nintendo capacity recommendation. Base the decision on the free-space number in Data Management and the titles you expect to install.

Game sizes are title-specific

There is no reliable single “Switch 2 game size.” Nintendo states that “Storage requirements vary by game.” The requirement can also differ by edition, region, DLC bundle, update state, or whether the release uses a game-key card.

Before purchasing or downloading, check the current Nintendo eShop listing for your region and edition. For a physical release, read the required free-space information on the package. Record what the figure describes: the base game, an expanded edition, required downloadable content, or an update. A number copied from a different edition can lead you to underestimate the space needed.

Nintendo’s official “Not Enough Space to Download Digital Content on Nintendo Switch 2” guidance explains where to verify this information: Nintendo Support: Not Enough Space to Download Digital Content. Because requirements can change with patches and newly added content, treat the current listing or packaging as authoritative rather than relying on an old cross-game list.

Game-key cards: physical packaging that still needs storage

A game-key card is not a cartridge containing the complete game. It is a physical key that authorizes the console to download and run the software. The game data must be installed in system memory or on a microSD Express card, and the key card is needed to play.

This format can therefore use storage much like a digital purchase. Check the package for the required free space before inserting the card. If the download will not fit internally, install a compatible microSD Express card first. Do not assume that the word “physical” means the release uses no console storage.

Choosing a microSD Express card

Confirm the standard

The non-negotiable requirement is microSD Express compatibility. Capacity alone is not enough: a high-capacity conventional microSDXC card still does not satisfy the Switch 2 storage requirement.

Stay within Nintendo’s limit

Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Cards beyond that ceiling are outside the stated compatibility guidance. Prices, model-specific performance, warranties, and availability change over time; Nintendo’s support pages do not establish a single preferred retail model.

Choose capacity from your actual library

Start with three facts: the free space shown under System Settings → Data Management, the number of digital or game-key-card titles you expect to keep installed, and how much captured media you retain. Then compare the current requirements of those specific titles. A card is an expansion for downloaded content and captures, not a backup destination for saves.

Prefer one card for the library

Nintendo recommends using a single card. If it fills, data can be copied to a larger microSD Express card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card, so rotating several cards is a poor way to build one unified library.

Setting up and managing expansion storage

  1. Update the console. Nintendo says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used. Connect Switch 2 to the internet and install any requested system update before troubleshooting the card.
  2. Insert a compatible card. Use a microSD Express card that is within the 2 TB supported limit. The card is sold separately.
  3. Let the console prepare the card. Follow the on-screen instructions after insertion. If the system requests an update or setup step, complete it before attempting a download.
  4. Check available space. Open System Settings → Data Management. Use the displayed free-space figure rather than the card’s advertised capacity when deciding whether a title will fit.
  5. Install or download software. With the card present, downloaded software uses it as the default location according to Nintendo’s card FAQ. Verify the title’s required space in the eShop or on its packaging first.
  6. Manage captures separately. Screenshots and captured video can be moved between system memory and the card. Moving captures can recover internal space without affecting game saves.
  7. Replace a full card carefully. Copy the data to a larger microSD Express card as Nintendo recommends. Plan the move as a single-library transfer; content left on separate cards cannot later be merged into one card.

What happens when storage is insufficient?

The card is rejected or games do not appear

First check the label and specifications. If the card is ordinary microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC rather than microSD Express, it is not a valid Switch 2 game-storage card. A legacy card can still be useful for importing captures, but it cannot hold Switch 2 downloads or saves.

A download says there is not enough space

Open System Settings → Data Management and compare the available space with the requirement shown in the eShop listing or on the physical package. Include the base software, the listed update or DLC requirement, and any game-key-card download. Do not use the 256 GB headline figure as your available-space number because system-reserved storage reduces it.

A game-key card asks for a large download

That is expected behavior for this format. The key card authenticates the release but does not contain the complete game. Ensure that the required free space is available internally or on a microSD Express card, and keep the key card available for play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A newly purchased card is not ready

Connect the console to the internet and install the system update required for first use. Then return to Data Management and verify that the card is recognized. If the card still fails, recheck that it is a genuine microSD Express product and within Nintendo’s capacity limit.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

A practical storage-planning method

Use this sequence whenever you are deciding whether to buy a card or whether a particular game will fit:

  1. Read the current free-space figure in Data Management.
  2. List the digital games, game-key-card releases, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos you plan to keep installed.
  3. Check each title’s current eShop listing or physical packaging for its required space and note the edition.
  4. Leave room for future updates instead of treating the total of today’s downloads as a permanent ceiling.
  5. If the internal figure is too tight, choose a microSD Express card based on the library you actually intend to keep, staying at or below 2 TB.
  6. Use one card where possible, and transfer its contents to a larger card if it eventually fills.

This approach avoids two common mistakes: buying an incompatible legacy card and treating a console specification as though every byte were available for games.

Physical, digital, and game-key-card releases compared

Release format Where the game data lives Storage check
Digital download System memory or microSD Express Read the current eShop requirement for the exact title and edition.
Physical game card containing the software The game card supplies the software, while updates and DLC may use system memory or microSD Express Check the package and any listed download requirement; physical does not automatically mean zero storage use.
Game-key card Software downloads to system memory or microSD Express Use the free-space figure printed on the packaging and keep the key card to play.

The format tells you how the initial game data is delivered, but the title’s own listing tells you how much console space is required. Always use both pieces of information together.

Bottom line for different players

Internal storage may be enough if you download little, buy mainly physical software, and keep few captures. Expansion is a sensible early purchase for a digital-heavy library, frequent game-key-card purchases, substantial DLC, or regular video capture. Whichever path you choose, buy only a microSD Express card, check free space in Data Management, and verify every game’s current requirement in the eShop or on its packaging. Your saves remain in system memory either way.
