How to check whether a Steam game uses generative AI before you buy

Open the game’s Steam store page and find the AI Generated Content Disclosure section. Read the developer’s full statement: it should indicate whether generative AI created content that ships in the game, appears on the store page or in marketing, and whether anything is generated while you play. Separate content made before release from live generation, then check what safeguards the developer describes for live systems. Steam’s disclosure is a developer statement collected through its Content Survey, not an independent audit. If the section is missing or vague, the accurate conclusion is “no disclosure found,” not “this game uses no AI.”

Where do I find a Steam game’s AI disclosure?

Use the individual game listing, not a search-results snippet or a publisher’s general profile.

  1. Open Steam in a browser or the Steam client and search for the exact game.
  2. Open that game’s store page and scroll through the store information until you see AI Generated Content Disclosure. The page layout can change, so use the browser’s find command for “AI Generated Content” if necessary.
  3. Read the entire developer-authored explanation. A short label may not tell you whether AI was used in the game itself, in promotional material, or during play.

Valve says much of a developer’s disclosure is placed on the game’s store page so customers can understand how the game uses AI. The original announcement, dated January 10, 2024, says: “We will also include much of your disclosure on the Steam store page for your game, so customers can also understand how the game uses AI.” See Valve’s Steamworks Development announcement.

What does Steam require developers to disclose?

Steam gathers generative-AI information through its developer Content Survey during pre-release review. The current documentation is aimed at AI-created material that ships with a product and that players consume, rather than every automated tool used in a studio.

Player-consumed game content

The examples in Valve’s Content Survey documentation include artwork, sound, narrative and localization. A disclosure may therefore cover an image set, music or sound effects, written dialogue, translated text, or another generated element that appears in the released game. Read the statement for the specific asset or system named; “AI used” alone does not tell you what a player will encounter.

Store-page and marketing material

The disclosure can extend beyond files inside the game. Valve’s announcement explains that information about AI use may appear on the store page, including when generative tools were used to make promotional material. A page can therefore disclose AI-generated key art or other marketing assets even when the statement does not identify AI-generated game content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workflow tools are a different category

Steam’s focus is the content delivered to customers, not productivity gains inside a development workflow. Valve’s wording is explicit: “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” That sentence appears in the Steamworks Content Survey. Reporting on Valve’s January 2026 clarification says code assistants used only to make a developer’s work more efficient do not require disclosure under this section. Do not treat a content disclosure as a complete inventory of every software tool used by a studio.

How should I read the statement on a Steam page?

Turn the paragraph into four concrete answers: where AI appears, what it makes, when it is made, and how a live system is controlled.

  1. Mark the location. Write down whether the statement refers to assets inside the game, the store page, marketing outside Steam, or more than one of these. “Promotional images” and “in-game textures” describe different things.
  2. Identify the content type. Look for words such as artwork, sound, narrative, dialogue, voice, localization or another player-facing category. If the developer names a narrow asset, do not broaden it to the whole game.
  3. Determine when generation happens. Decide whether the material was produced during development and packaged before release, or generated while the game is running. Steam distinguishes these cases because they create different player experiences.
  4. Read the live-generation safeguards. For a system that generates material during play, look for the guardrails the developer says it uses to prevent illegal content. Steam requires developers to describe those safeguards for live generation.
  5. Record what the statement does not say. If it discusses store art but says nothing about dialogue, keep those scopes separate. Do not infer an answer for an unmentioned category.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated content?

Pre-generated content is made during development and delivered as part of the released build. Live-generated content is created while the game runs, so players may receive new material in response to play, prompts or game state.

Generation stage What it means What to look for in the disclosure
Pre-generated AI-assisted material is produced before release and included in the game or its package. The named asset type and where it appears in the shipped game, such as art, sound, narrative or localization.
Live-generated The game creates material during play rather than relying only on files prepared before release. The trigger for generation, the kind of output players can see or hear, and the developer’s safeguards against illegal content.

A disclosure that says “AI-generated dialogue” still needs this timing distinction. Pre-generated lines are fixed content that can be reviewed before release; live dialogue can vary from session to session, making the stated controls and moderation approach especially important to your buying decision.

What safeguards should a live-AI disclosure explain?

Steam requires developers to describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal content when content is generated during play. The statement may use the developer’s own terminology, so look for a meaningful description rather than a promise that the system is simply “safe.”

  • Scope of the system: what the generator is allowed to produce, such as a bounded set of dialogue or images.
  • Input and output controls: whether player prompts are filtered and whether generated results are screened before display.
  • Failure handling: what happens when a result is rejected, unavailable or outside the game’s rules.
  • Player exposure: whether generated material is visible only to the requesting player or can be shared with others.

These questions help you evaluate the explanation without claiming that a disclosure proves the system will never produce objectionable material. Steam’s requirement is that the developer describe its guardrails; the page is not a certification of their effectiveness.

How can I compare two Steam games’ AI disclosures?

Use the same four axes for each listing. This prevents a prominent statement about marketing art from being mistaken for a statement about gameplay content.

Comparison axis Questions to record for each game
Location Is AI mentioned for in-game assets, the Steam store page, other marketing, or several locations?
Content type Does the statement name artwork, sound, narrative, localization, or another player-consumed category?
Timing Is the material pre-generated during development or generated live while the game runs?
Live-generation controls If generation is live, what safeguards does the developer describe to prevent illegal content?

For a practical comparison, make one short note per axis for each game. A listing that names only pre-generated menu artwork is materially different from one that generates player-facing dialogue in real time, even though both pages may use the phrase “AI-generated content.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a missing or vague disclosure mean?

A missing section does not establish that a game used no generative AI. It means only that you did not find a useful disclosure on the store page.

Steam’s official documents describe a developer survey and review process, not a public independent audit of every asset or tool. A developer statement is therefore an account of the product’s AI use, not proof that the game is free of additional undisclosed material. Keep your wording precise: say “no disclosure found,” identify what the page does state, and avoid converting silence into a negative claim.

If the information matters to your purchase, check the developer or publisher’s official statement and ask a specific question. For example: “Does the released game contain AI-generated artwork, sound, narrative or localization, and does it generate any content during play?” Save the answer and its date, because store pages and builds can change.

What should I do when the wording is unclear?

Ambiguous language is common when a statement uses broad terms such as “AI-assisted development.” Break it into the categories Steam uses, then ask for the missing scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“AI-assisted” without a content type

Ask whether the phrase refers to player-facing assets or only internal workflow. Steam says workflow-efficiency gains are not the focus of this disclosure, so the phrase alone does not tell you what appears in the game.

“Used for marketing” without a game-content statement

Treat the marketing claim as limited to promotional material unless the developer separately identifies in-game assets. Do not assume that marketing imagery was extracted from the game, or that it represents the production art style.

“Procedural” or “generated” without the word AI

Ask whether a generative-AI model is involved and whether output is fixed before release or created during play. Traditional procedural systems and generative AI are not interchangeable descriptions, and the disclosure should be read for the mechanism the developer actually names.

Live generation with no safeguards

Steam’s documentation says developers must describe guardrails for live-generated content. If the statement identifies live generation but gives no meaningful explanation of controls, treat that omission as an unanswered risk and seek clarification before buying.

What does Steam’s Content Survey verify?

The survey is part of Steam’s pre-release review and helps customers understand a product. Completing it does not exempt a product from Steam’s other content rules, and the presence of a disclosure does not certify legality, quality or reliability.

There is also a practical timing constraint for store information. Steam says that after a build and store page are approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited without contacting Steam Support. A page can therefore lag behind a later change unless the developer updates the information through Steam’s support process. Treat the displayed text as the current public statement, not as a guarantee that every future build will use the same content.

What changed in Steam’s January 2026 clarification?

Coverage published January 16, 2026, described Valve’s clarification that tools used only for workflow efficiency, including code helpers, are outside the focus of this disclosure section. The distinction matters because a studio can use automation internally without that fact describing any AI-generated material shipped to players. Read Game Developer’s report on Valve’s clarification for the dated context, while relying on Valve’s own Content Survey page for the operative categories.

This clarification does not turn the disclosure into a complete production log. It narrows what customers should expect the store-page section to explain: content that players consume and live-generation behavior, rather than every efficiency tool used behind the scenes.

Can a disclosure tell me whether the game is worth buying?

It can tell you what kind of AI-generated content to expect, but it cannot answer broader questions about quality, originality, performance or the developer’s compliance beyond the information stated. Use it as one purchase check alongside the game’s genre, content warnings, system requirements, refund terms and ordinary reviews.

Three hypothetical readings show why scope matters:

HUANUO FlowLift™ Dual Monitor Stand, Fully Adjustable Gaming Monitor Desk Mount for 13–32″ Computer Screens, Full Motion VESA 75x75/100x100 with C-Clamp & Grommet Base, Each Arm Holds 4.4 to 19.8 lbs
  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
  • Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  • Store art only: the developer identifies AI-generated promotional images and does not identify AI-generated game assets. Your conclusion should be limited to the marketing material described.
  • Pre-generated game assets: the statement names AI-generated localization included in the released build. That tells you the category and timing, but not how much text or which languages unless the developer says so.
  • Live dialogue: the game generates dialogue during play and describes filtering and fallback behavior. Compare those controls with your tolerance for variable player-facing output; do not treat “live” as equivalent to a fixed, reviewable script.

What is the fastest reliable checklist before checkout?

Run this check on the exact store page you intend to buy from, especially if you are looking at an early-access or frequently updated title.

  • Open the game’s own Steam store page.
  • Find and read the complete AI Generated Content Disclosure section.
  • Mark each location named: game content, store page, marketing, or a combination.
  • Record the content type: artwork, sound, narrative, localization or another category.
  • Label the timing as pre-generated or live-generated.
  • For live generation, note the safeguards described for preventing illegal content.
  • Separate explicit statements from categories the page does not mention.
  • If the section is absent or too vague, seek a direct developer statement and write down “no disclosure found” rather than claiming no AI use.
  • Recheck the page if the game receives a major update or changes its store information before you purchase.

This method gives you a documented, comparable answer without assuming that a label, a missing label or a workflow claim says more than it does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a developer change a Steam AI disclosure after the store page is approved?

Steam says some Content Survey answers cannot be edited after a build and store page are approved for release without contacting Steam Support. If a later update changes how content is generated, check whether the public page has been revised rather than assuming the original wording still covers the new build.

Does completing Steam’s Content Survey prove that a game follows all Steam content rules?

No. Steam states that completing the survey does not exempt a product from its other content requirements. The disclosure describes reported AI use; it is not a legal or policy certification.

Is there an official percentage of Steam games that use generative AI?

No authoritative prevalence figure is established in the cited Steam materials. Avoid treating an unsourced percentage as a fact, because the store disclosure is a per-product statement rather than a published market census.

What question should I send a developer when the store-page wording is too broad?

Ask for the four details Steam’s categories leave you needing: where AI appears, what type of content it creates, whether creation occurs before release or during play, and what safeguards control live output. Request a yes-or-no answer for each category so marketing-only use is not confused with player-facing content.
