Check the game’s Steam Store page first. In System Requirements, a SteamOS + Linux entry means the publisher provides a native Linux build. If the page lists only Windows, the game may still work through Valve’s Steam Play compatibility layer, Proton, but that is something to verify rather than a promise.

For a Windows-only listing, compare recent ProtonDB reports with your distribution, graphics hardware and drivers, then investigate the game’s launcher, DRM, anti-cheat and multiplayer requirements. Steam Deck buyers should also read the meaning behind the Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown badge instead of treating the badge as a universal Linux certification.

The quickest way to judge a Steam game on Linux

Use this order before paying:

  1. Open the game’s Steam Store page and expand System Requirements.
  2. Record the operating systems, minimum and recommended hardware, storage requirement, launcher or account requirement and any notes about additional software.
  3. Look specifically for SteamOS + Linux. That is the clearest Steam listing signal that a native Linux version is offered.
  4. If only Windows appears, search for the title on ProtonDB and read several recent reports from systems resembling yours.
  5. Check whether the game uses a separate launcher, restrictive DRM, kernel-level or other anti-cheat, or multiplayer middleware that may not work through Proton.
  6. Compare the listed hardware with your CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, display and installed graphics drivers.
  7. If you are buying for Steam Deck, inspect the Deck compatibility badge and its details.
  8. Recheck just before purchase because game updates, Proton releases and compatibility reviews change continually.

This sequence separates three different questions that are often confused: whether a Linux build exists, whether a Windows build starts through Proton, and whether it performs acceptably on your particular computer.

Read the Steam Store page correctly

Find the official platform listing

On the desktop Steam client or Steam website, open the game’s store page and scroll to System Requirements. Steam Support directs buyers to this area for both compatible operating systems and hardware requirements. The operating-system rows are more useful than a generic Linux tag elsewhere on the page because they describe what the publisher officially lists for that release.

Write down the exact text rather than relying on an icon alone. A page that includes SteamOS + Linux indicates a native Linux build is distributed through Steam. A page that lists only Windows does not prove that the title fails on Linux; it means Valve’s compatibility layer, rather than a publisher-supplied Linux executable, is the route you would be testing.

Capture every requirement, not just the OS

System Requirements can include separate minimum and recommended specifications. Note the processor, graphics card, memory, storage space, operating-system version, display assumptions and any launcher or account requirement. A game can launch successfully while still running poorly because your GPU is below the recommended level, your driver is outdated or the storage device causes long loading times.

Storage figures also deserve attention. A title may require more free space than its download size after unpacking, shader processing, updates or downloadable content. Leave practical headroom rather than planning to fill a drive to its final listed number.

Native Linux versus Proton

What a SteamOS + Linux listing tells you

A native listing means the publisher supplies a Linux build through Steam. The game is not depending on Windows compatibility translation for its executable, so Linux-specific support is part of the release offering. That is the strongest platform signal available on the store page, but it is not a performance guarantee. Drivers, graphics APIs, CPU speed, memory, storage and the game’s own Linux port quality still determine your result.

Native ports can also differ from their Windows counterparts. Features may arrive later, a multiplayer service may have separate requirements, or a particular graphics setting may behave differently. Read the current requirements and recent player reports when the title is important to you, especially for competitive games or newly released ports.

What a Windows-only listing tells you

Windows-only means the publisher does not list a native Linux version. Steam Play can run many such games through Proton, which translates and supplies compatibility components so a Windows release can operate on Linux. Valve describes Windows-only games as potentially playable on Linux, not automatically supported on every distribution or computer.

Proton is a compatibility path, not an operating-system entry supplied by the publisher. A game can boot, render correctly and still fail later at its launcher, during an online sign-in, when an anti-cheat service starts or after an update. Treat a successful community report as evidence for a particular setup, not as a guarantee for yours.

How to use ProtonDB without overtrusting a rating

Start with recent reports

ProtonDB is a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck experiences. Search for the exact game and read multiple reports, prioritizing recent entries. Compatibility can change when the game, its launcher, a graphics driver or Proton changes, so an old report may describe problems that have been fixed—or a configuration that no longer works.

A single medal or headline rating is only a summary of many users’ experiences. Open the underlying reports and look for patterns that match your machine and distribution.

Extract the details that affect your setup

  • Proton version: Record which Proton release was used. A report on one version may not predict behavior on another.
  • Distribution and desktop environment: Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora and other distributions ship different kernels, libraries and driver packages. A report from a different distribution is useful context, not a controlled test of yours.
  • GPU and driver: Look for the graphics vendor, model and driver branch. A report from an AMD card does not establish equivalent behavior on an older Nvidia card, and vice versa.
  • Launch options: Note any command-line option or compatibility setting. Understand what it changes before copying it; a workaround can fix one symptom while creating another.
  • Launcher behavior: Check whether a separate launcher opens, accepts input and remains logged in. A game that reaches a launcher but cannot complete sign-in is not practically playable.
  • Video and audio: Reports may identify black screens, missing cut-scenes, codec problems, stutter or broken voice chat that a basic launch test would miss.
  • Multiplayer: Read comments about matchmaking, invites, voice services and anti-cheat. Single-player success does not establish that online play works.
  • Steam Deck context: Deck reports can reveal controller or display issues, but Deck hardware and Valve’s software stack are not identical to a desktop installation.

Interpret conflicting reports

When reports disagree, compare their dates, Proton versions, distributions, drivers and launch options before deciding that one side is wrong. Consistent recent reports from similar hardware deserve more weight than a lone success or failure. If the title has just received a major patch, give the newest reports priority and expect a short period of uncertainty.

Check Proton’s difficult dependencies

Launchers and account systems

Some games start a second launcher before the game itself. Confirm that the launcher installs under Proton, accepts keyboard and controller input, completes authentication and does not require a Windows-only helper. A launcher update can break an otherwise working game, so recent reports about the launcher matter as much as reports about the game executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DRM and middleware

Digital-rights-management components, overlay systems, video codecs and other middleware run inside the game’s compatibility environment. Valve’s Deck criteria explicitly include the game and all of its middleware when Proton is involved. A title that renders a menu but fails when a middleware service initializes is not fully compatible.

Anti-cheat and multiplayer

Anti-cheat is a separate compatibility gate. Valve’s compatibility criteria include anti-cheat support, and Proton support must cover the game and its middleware. Some anti-cheat systems can operate with Proton when the developer enables the necessary support; others can block online play. Do not infer multiplayer compatibility from a single-player launch report.

For an online game, look for recent reports that specifically mention matchmaking or servers, not merely the words runs or launches. A patch can change anti-cheat behavior without changing the store page’s operating-system line.

Match the game to your hardware and drivers

Compatibility and performance are different checks. A ProtonDB report can show that a title starts, while your computer may still miss the game’s performance target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the processor and memory

Check your CPU model and core generation against the minimum and recommended processor entries. Large open worlds, simulation games and multiplayer matches can be CPU-limited even when the graphics card is adequate. Compare installed RAM with both requirement tiers and leave enough memory for your desktop, browser and background services.

Compare the GPU and driver

Identify the exact GPU model, not just the graphics brand. Compare it with the listed minimum and recommended cards, then verify that your distribution has a current driver appropriate for that GPU. Proton relies on the graphics stack as well as the game; an incorrect or incomplete driver can cause a launch failure, rendering glitches or poor frame pacing.

Check storage and display assumptions

Confirm that the installation drive has room for the game, updates and shader data. Also check the game’s expected resolution and refresh rate. A title that reaches its advertised frame rate at 1280×720 may not do so at a high-resolution ultrawide display with demanding effects enabled.

Rank #4

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Use headroom instead of a bare minimum

Minimum requirements generally describe the lowest supported configuration, not a smooth experience at your preferred settings. If your system is close to the minimum, look for reports from the same GPU and resolution and be prepared to reduce quality settings. Proton adds another variable, so matching or exceeding the recommended hardware gives you more room for driver and compatibility differences.

Understand Steam Deck compatibility badges

Steam Deck badges are a Valve review of the game on Deck, not a universal certification for every Linux computer. The badge appears on the store page and is useful when Deck is your target device.

Badge Valve’s meaning What to expect
Verified Works great out of the box under Valve’s criteria. Normal Deck controls, display behavior and system support should require little or no adjustment.
Playable Works, but may require manual tweaking. You might need to choose a controller configuration, use the touchscreen for a launcher or adjust another setting.
Unsupported Currently nonfunctional on Deck. Do not expect a ready-to-play Deck experience; investigate separately if your desktop differs substantially.
Unknown Valve has not checked the title. The missing badge is not evidence that the game fails.

What Valve checks

Valve’s criteria cover controller input, support for the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display, legible text, seamless launcher behavior, Proton support for the game and its middleware, and anti-cheat operation. A Playable label can therefore reflect a usability task rather than a total launch failure.

Verified status is valuable for a Deck purchase, but it does not certify Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora or another desktop distribution on different hardware. Conversely, an Unknown or Unsupported Deck result does not automatically describe every desktop Linux setup; the hardware, drivers, controls and display path are different.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Account for distribution differences

Linux is not one identical environment. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora and other distributions can use different kernel versions, graphics stacks, libraries, package formats and default desktop sessions. ProtonDB reports from your own distribution are the closest comparison, followed by reports from distributions with a similar driver stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a distribution name as a guarantee or a disqualification. A game may work on two distributions but fail on a third because of a driver regression or a missing dependency. Keep your system updated through its normal software tools, and record the distribution version and graphics driver when comparing reports.

Special cases that need extra caution

There are no ProtonDB reports

No report means there is no community evidence, not that the game is broken. Rely on the store requirements, search for information about the game’s launcher and anti-cheat, and decide whether you can accept uncertainty. If you need guaranteed playability on a specific date, an untested Windows-only title is a high-risk purchase.

The newest reports are negative

Check whether the failures began after a game patch, launcher update, Proton release or driver change. Look for a newer report that confirms a fix and identifies the required version or setting. If all recent reports describe the same blocker, assume the blocker remains until credible evidence changes.

Reports succeed only with unusual tweaks

Separate harmless preference changes from essential workarounds. Selecting a controller layout or lowering graphics quality is a normal adjustment; disabling a security feature, replacing files or repeatedly switching Proton versions indicates a fragile setup. Decide whether you are comfortable maintaining that workaround after future updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need competitive online play

Competitive multiplayer deserves stricter standards than a single-player purchase. Require recent evidence for anti-cheat, matchmaking, voice services and updates on hardware close to yours. A game that is acceptable for offline play may be unsuitable if an online session is the main reason you are buying it.

A practical pre-purchase decision framework

Use the following outcomes after completing the checks:

Evidence Risk level Reasonable decision
SteamOS + Linux listed; hardware and drivers meet requirements. Lower platform risk. Buy if the game’s Linux-specific features and performance target meet your needs.
Windows-only; many recent ProtonDB reports match your distribution and GPU; multiplayer and launcher work. Moderate but informed risk. Buy with confidence proportional to how closely your setup matches those reports.
Windows-only; reports require several tweaks or use different hardware. Higher risk. Buy only if you accept troubleshooting and have a fallback plan.
Windows-only; no reports or recent reports show a consistent anti-cheat or launcher blocker. High risk. Wait for clearer evidence or choose a title with an established Linux path.
Deck badge is Playable. Usable with friction. Buy if the listed manual action is acceptable to you.
Deck badge is Unknown. Unmeasured. Use ProtonDB and other current evidence; do not interpret Unknown as Unsupported.

Recheck immediately before clicking Buy

Valve says its compatibility review is ongoing, with new games and updates published every day. ProtonDB reports and Proton versions also change. Reopen the store page immediately before purchase and confirm that the operating-system listing, Deck badge and requirements have not changed. Then check the newest ProtonDB entries for your distribution, GPU and the game’s current launcher or multiplayer behavior.

This final check matters most for new releases, games with live-service updates and titles that depend on anti-cheat. A result that was reliable months ago may not describe the current build, while a previously broken game may now work after a publisher or Proton update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to record for troubleshooting later

Before buying, save a short note containing the game’s listed operating systems, minimum and recommended hardware, required storage, your distribution and version, GPU and driver, CPU, RAM, display resolution, Proton version mentioned in the best matching reports, and any launch option or launcher workaround. If the game fails later, this record lets you compare your setup with the reports that informed your purchase instead of starting from memory.

The decision is straightforward when the signals agree: a native SteamOS + Linux listing is the clearest official path; a Windows-only game needs current Proton evidence; and Steam Deck badges describe Deck-specific behavior. Hardware, drivers, launchers, anti-cheat and the date of the reports determine whether that path is likely to work for you.
