To check a specific RPG, use the game’s Nintendo eShop listing or Nintendo product page before you buy it. Look in Software Details (or the Nintendo Switch Online features) for Save Data Cloud. If the game is already installed, highlight it on HOME, press + or −, choose Save Data Cloud, and select your user. Backup controls appear when the title is compatible; otherwise Nintendo shows an incompatibility message.
Cloud backup requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and is tied to the player’s Nintendo Account. The same compatible save can be downloaded on another Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch where the RPG is playable, but Switch 2-only additions do not become available when that save is used on the original Switch.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What is the quickest way to check whether a Switch RPG has cloud saves?
The fastest check depends on whether you own the RPG. Before purchase, open its Nintendo eShop page and inspect Software Details for a Save Data Cloud entry. You can make the same check on Nintendo’s product-information page, where cloud backup appears among the Nintendo Switch Online features.
For an installed game, use the HOME software menu. If the menu offers backup controls after you select a user, the RPG supports Save Data Cloud. If it does not, Nintendo displays the message, “This software doesn’t support Save Data Cloud backup.” Support is assigned per title, so never infer compatibility solely from the fact that another RPG supports it.

How do I check an RPG before buying it in Nintendo eShop?
The eShop listing is the most useful pre-purchase check because it identifies support for the exact edition you are considering.
- Open Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.
- Search for the RPG and open its product page.
- Scroll to Software Details.
- Find the Save Data Cloud entry. Its presence indicates that Nintendo lists the title as supporting cloud backup.
- Check the edition name as well. A standard Switch release, a Switch 2 Edition, and a title with separate enhanced content may have different software descriptions even when they use related save data.
This check is title-specific rather than genre-wide. Nintendo says the vast majority of Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch titles support Save Data Cloud, but the individual listing remains the authority for the RPG you plan to play.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I verify cloud-save support on Nintendo’s website?
Yes. Nintendo’s product-information pages provide a second pre-purchase route and can be useful when you are browsing on a phone or computer.
- Open Nintendo’s product-information page for the RPG.
- Locate the section describing Nintendo Switch Online features.
- Look for Save Data Cloud in that feature list.
- Confirm that the page describes the same release or edition you intend to use.
If the web listing and the eShop page appear to differ, check the software title and edition carefully before making a decision. A regional listing, a separate Switch 2 Edition, or a different release can have its own product information.
How do I check a game I have already installed?
The HOME software menu gives you a direct compatibility test without deleting or changing your save.
- From HOME, highlight the RPG.
- Press − or + to open the software menu.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Select the intended user.
- Choose Back Up Save Data if that option is available.
A compatible game exposes the backup controls after you choose the user. For unsupported software, Nintendo documents the exact warning: “This software doesn’t support Save Data Cloud backup.” Seeing that message means the absence is a software limitation, not a problem with your console’s storage.
What if the Save Data Cloud option is missing?
First make sure you opened the software menu for the correct RPG and pressed + or −, rather than opening the game itself. Then verify that you selected the profile that owns the save and that the console is connected to the Nintendo Account used for Nintendo Switch Online.
If the menu still has no backup controls, use the system-wide route below. If Nintendo reports that the software does not support Save Data Cloud, there is no setting that can enable it for that title.
Is there another menu path to test support?
Yes. Nintendo also provides a system-settings route that lets you inspect cloud-save status by user.
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose save you want to protect.
- Choose the RPG and select Back Up Save Data when the control is available.
This route is especially useful when several profiles use the console or when you want to review cloud status without first highlighting a particular game. It does not override a title’s compatibility decision; unsupported software remains unsupported.

What do I need before cloud backup will work?
You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account associated with the player profile that owns the save. Nintendo’s service guidance states: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to utilize the Save Data Cloud service.”
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Membership: The subscription must be active when you access Save Data Cloud.
- Correct user: Backups are associated with the player’s Nintendo Account, so select the profile that created or uses the RPG save.
- Compatible software: The RPG itself must list or expose Save Data Cloud support.
- Playable destination: A backup can be downloaded on another Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch where that software is playable.
Buying the game, owning a cartridge, or having free space on the console does not substitute for the membership requirement. Cloud backup is a Nintendo Switch Online service rather than a general-purpose copy of every save on the system.
Can I move an RPG save from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2?
Yes, when the RPG is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and supports Save Data Cloud. The backup is linked to the player’s Nintendo Account, so you can download it on the other console where the same software is playable.
The direction works both ways for a compatible Switch game: a save made on Nintendo Switch can be backed up and downloaded on Nintendo Switch 2, and a save made on Switch 2 can be backed up and downloaded on the original Switch. The software must be available and playable on the destination console.

What happens to Switch 2-only enhancements?
If the RPG has features or content added exclusively for Switch 2, those additions are not available when the same save is used on the original Nintendo Switch. Cloud backup carries the save data; it does not turn the older console into a Switch 2 or make Switch 2-only content run there.
When comparing editions, treat save portability and feature parity as separate questions. An RPG can support the same save on both systems while still offering extra graphics, modes, or content only on Switch 2.
How should I compare two RPGs for cloud-save support?
Use the same four checks for each title. This avoids assuming that one game’s behavior applies to another in the same series or genre.
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Save Data Cloud listing | Is Save Data Cloud shown in eShop Software Details or Nintendo’s product information? | This is the title-level compatibility signal before purchase. |
| Switch 2 edition or enhancements | Does the game have a Switch 2 Edition or other Switch 2-only content? | The save may travel between consoles while enhanced features remain unavailable on the original Switch. |
| Playability on both consoles | Can the exact software be played on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch? | A cloud backup can be downloaded only where the software is playable. |
| Nintendo Switch Online dependence | Is your Nintendo Switch Online membership active? | The service is mandatory for using Save Data Cloud. |
Record the result for the exact release you own. A physical cartridge, digital download, standard edition, and Switch 2 Edition can have different product descriptions, so compare like with like.
What happens if my Nintendo Switch Online membership expires?
When Nintendo Switch Online expires, you cannot access your cloud backups. Nintendo says access to prior backups returns if you renew within 180 days of the membership ending.
That 180-day period is a recovery window, not a permanent extension of the service. If you rely on a cloud copy while moving between consoles, renew before attempting to download it and use the same Nintendo Account that held the backup.
Is there a local backup alternative on Switch 2?
No. Nintendo currently does not support local save-data backups on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch. If an RPG does not support Save Data Cloud, the console does not provide a separate local save-backup method that you can use instead.
This makes the pre-purchase compatibility check important for long RPGs. Before committing dozens of hours, confirm the listing or test the installed title’s Save Data Cloud menu rather than assuming every game has a recoverable backup.

How do I troubleshoot a failed backup check?
Work through the checks in order so you can distinguish an account issue from a title that simply does not support the feature.
1. Confirm the exact user profile
Open the Save Data Cloud menu and select the profile that plays the RPG. Because backups are associated with a Nintendo Account, checking a different user can make the expected save or controls appear to be missing.
2. Check the listing for the exact edition
Return to eShop Software Details or Nintendo’s product page and verify the full software name. Do not rely on a series entry, a similarly named expansion, or a different regional product page.
3. Use both menu routes
Test the game from the HOME software menu and from System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud. If both routes identify the software as incompatible, the result is consistent with Nintendo’s title-level restriction.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Verify Nintendo Switch Online status
Make sure the Nintendo Account selected for the save has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without it, cloud service access is unavailable even if the RPG supports the feature.
5. Check destination compatibility before transferring
If you are moving the save to another console, confirm that the RPG is playable there. A valid backup cannot be downloaded to a system that cannot run the software.
What should I check before starting a long RPG?
Use this short checklist before investing significant play time:
- Open the RPG’s eShop page and find Save Data Cloud under Software Details.
- Cross-check Nintendo’s product-information page if the edition or release name is unclear.
- On the console, test HOME → highlight game → +/− → Save Data Cloud.
- Select the profile that owns the save and confirm that Back Up Save Data is available.
- Keep Nintendo Switch Online active for as long as you need cloud access.
- If you will use both consoles, check whether the RPG has Switch 2-only content that will not work on the original Switch.
These checks answer the practical question—whether your particular RPG save can be backed up and restored—without relying on a broad statement about Switch games in general.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are cloud saves tied to the cartridge or to my Nintendo Account?
They are associated with the player’s Nintendo Account, not merely with possession of a cartridge. Select the profile that owns the RPG save when opening Save Data Cloud, especially on a console used by several people.
Will a Switch 2 Edition make my old Switch save unusable?
A compatible save can still be used across the two consoles, but Switch 2-exclusive additions are unavailable when that save is used on the original Switch. Save portability and access to enhanced content are separate compatibility questions.
Can I check support without launching the RPG?
Yes. The eShop Software Details panel and Nintendo’s product-information page list Save Data Cloud support before you start the game. The HOME and System Settings checks are only needed when you want to verify an installed copy or a particular user profile.
What should I do if I changed Nintendo Accounts after making the save?
Check the profile connected to the Nintendo Account that created the save, because cloud backups are account-associated. A different account’s Save Data Cloud menu will not represent the original player’s backup.
