How to Check Whether an Xbox Game Supports 120Hz or 240Hz Output

Verify a game’s 120fps mode with its publisher, then check the Xbox setting and full HDMI path. Xbox Series X|S supports up to 120Hz, not 240Hz.

Xbox Series X|S supports video output up to 120Hz, not 240Hz. To check a particular game, verify that its publisher documents a 120fps mode, then check whether your Xbox and the entire display connection can use 120Hz at your chosen resolution. The “Optimized for Series X|S” badge by itself does not promise 120fps.

Check whether the game supports a 120fps mode

Look for an explicit 120fps or performance-mode statement for the exact game. The best places to check are the publisher’s official support or product page, recent patch notes, and the game’s video or graphics settings. Xbox advises players to check with the publisher because enhancements vary by game (Xbox: Optimized for Series X|S).

“Optimized for Series X|S” is not a 120fps certification. The label covers different enhancements, which may include visual or loading improvements as well as higher frame rates; Xbox says optimized games can reach up to 120fps, but the specific benefits depend on the title. A console set to 120Hz also does not make a game render at 120fps.

  2. Check whether 120Hz is available for the resolution you want to use. If it is, select it. Xbox’s display guidance says Series X|S supports refresh rates up to 120Hz, with supported content and a compatible display required (Xbox Wire: Xbox Series X|S display guidance).

  3. If 120Hz is unavailable, inspect the full signal path: the display’s specific HDMI input, the resolution and refresh-rate combination it supports, and any receiver, switch, or capture device between the console and display. Check the display maker’s specifications for that input rather than relying on the product’s headline panel refresh rate.

Check FPS Boost separately for backward-compatible games

FPS Boost is a title-specific feature for selected backward-compatible games, not a general setting that gives every Xbox game a higher frame rate. For a supported title, open Manage Game > Compatibility Options to check or toggle FPS Boost. Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog also provides an FPS Boost filter (Xbox: Backward compatibility).

What 120Hz and 240Hz mean for Xbox

Frames per second (fps) describes how many frames a game renders or delivers per second. Hertz (Hz) describes how often a display refreshes each second. A game needs a 120fps mode and a compatible 120Hz display connection to show the full high-frame-rate output; selecting 120Hz on the console alone does not change a game’s frame rate.

Xbox’s published Series X|S guidance sets the output ceiling at 120Hz. A 240Hz-rated monitor can still be used at a refresh rate the Xbox supports, but its 240Hz rating does not make the console output at 240Hz. If you are choosing a display for Xbox, check its supported refresh rate at your intended resolution and the capabilities of the HDMI input you will use. If you also plan to connect another device, consider whether 240Hz matters for that device rather than expecting it from the Xbox.
