Start by checking whether the RPG is available to you
Open the Xbox Game Pass games catalog and use its Role playing genre filter to find candidates. Treat that filter as a discovery tool, not proof that a particular game is included for you: Xbox says catalog availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform.

Before deciding, check the individual game’s current catalog listing against your location, subscription plan, and device. Game Pass library access is temporary, not permanent ownership. Xbox says subscribers can access games in the library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the library. If either happens before you finish, continued play may require renewing the subscription or buying the game.

Xbox’s current plan page lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass, with differences in libraries, supported platforms, release timing, and benefits. Check that page for current details rather than assuming every tier includes the same RPGs or offers the same features. As described on the page, Ultimate includes new games on day one; Premium brings new Xbox-published games within a year of launch; Essential does not include new releases on day one; and PC Game Pass covers PC.
Compare the cost for your expected play period
Use the current subscription price for the plan you need and the current store price for the edition you would buy. Estimate how many months you are likely to stay subscribed to finish the RPG, then compare that subscription cost with the purchase price. There is no universal cheaper choice: the result depends on the game, your play schedule, and how long you keep the subscription.

Check for a member discount before buying
Xbox advertises savings of up to 20% on selected Game Pass catalog games, but that is not a guaranteed discount on every RPG. Check the specific game’s current Xbox Store listing and confirm whether an offer applies to the edition and platform you want. Include the discounted price in the comparison only if the offer is actually available to your account.

Make the choice based on how you play
- Choose Game Pass access if the exact RPG is included for your plan and platform, your likely subscription cost for the play period compares favorably with the purchase price, and you are comfortable with access ending if the subscription lapses or the game leaves the catalog.
- Buy the game if you expect to keep playing beyond your subscription, want access that does not depend on catalog inclusion, or the purchase price is a better fit than the subscription cost for the time you expect to play.
- Recheck before paying if the catalog, plan details, store price, or member discount may have changed since you last looked.
