Why the edition matters for friends and Realms
Java and Bedrock have separate multiplayer ecosystems in the ordinary setup, so check which edition your friends or server use before trying to join. Minecraft’s edition comparison associates Java play with Windows, Mac, and Linux, and Bedrock cross-play with supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms. It also identifies private Realms with Java Edition and Realms Plus with Bedrock Edition.

Minecraft says Mojang account migration ended on December 18, 2023. You need a Microsoft account to continue playing. Sign in to the account connected to the migrated purchase and check the edition there; old Java worlds saved on your computer do not prove that the current account owns Java. See Minecraft’s Mojang account and Microsoft account migration information.

Does owning one edition mean you own the other?
Not necessarily. Minecraft says the Java and Bedrock PC bundle was released on June 7, 2022, but the account still needs to show the relevant entitlement. Check both editions individually in the Launcher or Store, especially if you bought the game before the bundle or have more than one Microsoft account.
