To find out whether your PC can run a 3D metroidvania, open that game’s exact Steam Store page and scroll to System Requirements. Record the listed operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM, graphics API, storage space and any notes, then compare them with your own hardware one category at a time. Steam identifies Minimum and Recommended targets, but meeting Minimum does not promise a particular frame rate.
For a dependable decision, use Steam’s Help → System Information screen to identify your hardware, check both requirement tiers, and account for drivers, patches, resolution, graphics settings and upscaling. If your PC is close to a requirement, an automated estimate or a demo can add evidence, but neither replaces the game’s own Store-page specifications.

What is the fastest reliable way to check whether your PC can run the game?
The game’s own Steam Store listing is the primary source. Steam says you can check a game’s system requirements and compatible operating systems by scrolling to its System Requirements section, and it advises checking hardware as well as operating-system compatibility.
- Identify the exact game edition. Open the current Steam listing for the version you intend to play. Different editions, remasters or platform releases can list different requirements.
- Copy every requirement. Record the operating-system name and version, 64-bit or 32-bit requirement, CPU, memory, GPU, VRAM, graphics API, storage space and any notes beneath the table.
- Identify your PC. In Steam, open Help → System Information. You can also use your operating system’s system-information tools. Record exact model names rather than broad labels such as “Intel graphics.”
- Compare categories separately. Check the operating system and architecture, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, graphics API and free storage against both Minimum and Recommended.
- Classify the result. A PC that clears Recommended is the strongest paper match. One that clears only Minimum is a possible basic-play match, not a frame-rate guarantee. A component below Minimum makes the result below the published target.
- Investigate borderline cases. Lower settings, a playable demo, a refund-aware trial where available, or an automated estimate can provide additional evidence. Treat all of those as risk reduction, not certainty.
Which PC specifications do I need to collect?
Write down the exact values shown for your computer before comparing it with the Steam listing. A single weak component can determine whether a game launches or remains playable.

Operating system and architecture
Record the operating-system name, version and architecture. A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch matters even when the rest of the hardware appears fast enough. Also note whether the game lists Windows, Linux or macOS support; an operating system that is absent from the Store page needs a separate compatibility check.
CPU model
Capture the complete processor model, not just the manufacturer or a family name. Two processors described casually as “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” can have very different generations and performance.
GPU model and VRAM
Record the graphics processor’s full model and its available video memory. “Intel graphics,” “GeForce” or “Radeon” alone is not enough to compare against a requirement. If the listing names a graphics API as well as a GPU, keep that requirement in your notes.
Installed RAM
Use the installed system-memory figure, not the amount of storage on the drive and not the GPU’s VRAM. Compare it with both tiers because Recommended can require more memory even when the game may launch with the Minimum amount.
Free storage
Check available space on the drive where you will install the game. Compare free space with the listing’s storage figure and leave room for the installation process and updates; the Store requirement is the figure that establishes the game’s published target.

How should I compare Minimum and Recommended requirements?
Minimum and Recommended describe different goals. Minimum is a lower target intended to indicate that the game may launch or provide basic play under suitable conditions; Recommended is the more useful target for comfortable settings.

Do not convert a paper match into an FPS promise. Drivers, game patches, display resolution, graphics quality, upscaling and other running software can change the result. A requirement table is a compatibility and target-setting tool, not a benchmark conducted on your machine.
Where do I find my exact hardware in Steam?
Steam provides a built-in summary that avoids guessing from a laptop sticker or a generic product description.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Help in the top menu.
- Select System Information.
- Copy the operating-system version and architecture, processor model, installed memory and graphics hardware into your comparison notes.
- Check your operating system’s own system-information tools if you need to verify free storage or details that Steam does not present in the summary.
Keep the model text intact when comparing. A suffix, generation number or mobile designation can identify a materially different part from the similarly named desktop model.
What does “likely to run,” “borderline” or “below minimum” mean?
These labels are practical decisions, not official Steam ratings. They help you decide what to try next after comparing every listed category.

Likely to run
Your operating system and architecture are supported, every major component meets at least Minimum, and there is no unresolved graphics-API or storage issue. If the PC also reaches Recommended, you have a stronger basis for using the game’s intended settings, but real performance can still vary.
Borderline
One or more components sit very close to a listed threshold, or the listing and your system do not line up cleanly. Try lower graphics settings, a demo if the developer offers one, or an automated estimate. A borderline label means uncertainty remains; it is not evidence that the game will hold a particular FPS.
Below minimum
A required operating system, architecture, CPU, GPU, VRAM, graphics API or memory figure is below the published Minimum, or the drive lacks the required free space. Find the specific failed category before considering an upgrade or compatibility workaround; replacing an unrelated component will not solve that bottleneck.
Should I use an automated Steam compatibility checker?
An automated checker is useful after the manual Store-page comparison, especially when your PC is close to a requirement. DoesItRun’s own documentation describes its figures as guides rather than guarantees because drivers, patches and settings can change real FPS. Use the estimate to prioritize investigation, not to overrule a missing operating-system or graphics requirement.

How do Linux and macOS users check a Windows-only game?
If the Steam listing does not include your operating system, the normal Windows comparison is incomplete. Linux users should check whether Steam Play/Proton can run the title, whether their graphics driver supports the game’s graphics API, and whether recent reports from hardware similar to theirs show acceptable behavior.
Valve’s Proton requirements documentation includes graphics-driver guidance for DirectX 9/10/11 and DirectX 12 games. A Proton rating is evidence about compatibility, not a universal FPS promise. Steam also warns that compatibility utilities and emulators are not supported by Steam Support, so a successful report from another system does not guarantee assistance or identical results.
macOS users likewise need to distinguish between a native macOS listing and a Windows build that would require an external compatibility layer. Check the Store page’s operating-system entry before evaluating CPU or GPU figures.

Steam-client baselines provide context for running the client itself, not for running a particular 3D metroidvania. PCGamingWiki’s Steam client table lists these baselines:

Those figures do not replace the game’s own Store-page requirements. A game can demand substantially more CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM or storage than the Steam client, so use the title-specific listing for the final decision.

What should I do when one component fails?
Fix the identified bottleneck rather than upgrading blindly. The appropriate next step depends on which requirement you missed.
- Operating system or architecture: verify that the game actually supports your edition and architecture. An unsupported platform requires a separate native or Proton assessment, not a faster graphics card.
- CPU: compare the complete processor model again and close unnecessary background workloads before testing. A GPU upgrade will not remove a processor shortfall.
- GPU or VRAM: prioritize the graphics component, then test at a lower resolution or quality level if the game offers those controls. This can reduce demand but does not change the published requirement comparison.
- RAM: check installed system memory and whether other applications are consuming it. More RAM does not substitute for a GPU that is below Minimum.
- Storage: free space on the intended installation drive or choose another suitable drive. Storage capacity is a prerequisite for installation, not a performance score.
- Graphics API or driver: install a driver appropriate to your operating system and verify that the required API is supported. Linux users should include Proton-specific driver guidance in this check.
After addressing the exact failed category, repeat the complete comparison. Requirements interact: passing four categories does not cancel out a missing fifth one.

Use a staged approach. First, make the Store-page comparison. Second, if the result is borderline, check an automated estimate and look for a demo or a refund-aware trial where available. Third, test with conservative settings and the display resolution you actually plan to use.
Record what changed when you test: resolution, quality preset, upscaling choice, driver version and whether the game received a patch. That context explains why another player’s result may not match yours and prevents an estimate from being treated as a guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a laptop with the same GPU name perform differently from a desktop PC?
Yes. The model name alone does not describe the laptop’s power limits, cooling or available VRAM configuration. Compare the complete GPU entry from Steam System Information and treat close matches as borderline until a demo or estimate supports them.
Does having enough RAM mean the game will run smoothly?
No. RAM is only one requirement category. A system can meet the memory figure while falling short on the CPU, GPU, VRAM, graphics API or operating-system requirement that the game also lists.

How do I check a Proton report without treating it as a benchmark?
Match the report to your Linux distribution, driver, GPU and game version as closely as possible. Use it to identify compatibility problems, then make a separate judgment about performance because a Proton rating is not an FPS guarantee.
What if the Steam requirement lists a GPU I cannot identify on my PC?
Open Steam’s Help → System Information and copy the full graphics-device name, including any mobile or integrated designation. Broad labels such as “Intel graphics” or “GeForce” are too vague for a reliable comparison.
