How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run an Open-World Simulation Game

To find out whether your PC can run an open-world simulation game, compare its current official requirements with your own operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, video memory, DirectX support, storage and network requirements. Use the minimum tier as a compatibility floor, not a promise of smooth play. The recommended tier is a better starting point for the publisher’s intended settings, but your resolution, frame-rate target, patches, laptop power limits and cooling still affect the result.

This guide shows exactly where to find each specification in Windows, how to interpret requirement tables, how to diagnose poor performance after installation and how to decide which component matters when your system falls short.

Start with the game’s exact requirements

There is no universal specification for an open-world simulation game. A small management sandbox, a driving simulator and a large flight or life simulation can place very different demands on a computer. Use the named game’s current store listing or publisher support page rather than a generic “gaming PC” label.

  • Windows edition, release and 64-bit requirement
  • Processor model or generation
  • System memory (RAM)
  • Graphics processor model, graphics API and video memory
  • DirectX version or feature requirement
  • Storage capacity and whether an SSD is mandatory
  • Broadband or other online-service requirement
  • Any notes about patches, laptop GPUs, visual presets or special modes

Requirements can change between editions and major updates. A requirement written for one game should not be transferred to another title in the same genre.

Examples of how widely requirements vary

Steam’s Forza Horizon 6 listing illustrates a demanding modern simulation specification: it calls for a 64-bit processor and operating system, Windows 10 version 22H2 or newer, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet, 167 GB of storage and an SSD. It provides separate CPU and GPU models for minimum and recommended configurations.

Steam’s Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 listing is different. Its published information includes Windows 10, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 and 50 GB of storage. These examples are not a universal target; they show why the exact listing for your game is the only reliable starting point.

Collect your PC specifications in Windows

Windows includes a built-in report that gathers the values most game requirement tables use. You can check the key fields without installing a hardware-identification utility.

Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag)

  1. Open the Start menu and search for dxdiag.
  2. Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If Windows asks whether it should check digitally signed drivers, choose the option appropriate for your support situation and wait for the tool to finish loading.
  3. On the System tab, note the operating-system name and version, processor, installed memory and DirectX version.
  4. Open the Display tab, or each display tab if the PC exposes more than one adapter. Record the graphics adapter name, driver information and the displayed video-memory values.
  5. Select Save All Information to create a text report. Keep it with the game’s requirement table if you are comparing several PCs or asking for support.

Bandai Namco’s support instructions describe the same launch method: click Start and enter “dxdiag” in the search box. Microsoft defines DirectX as Windows components that let software, especially games, work directly with video and audio hardware. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag is useful, but a game may also require particular graphics features that depend on the GPU, driver and operating-system support.

Confirm the operating-system architecture

A requirement for a 64-bit operating system is not satisfied by simply having a recent processor. In Windows, open Settings → System → About and check System type. It should identify a 64-bit operating system when the game requires one. Also compare the Windows release itself; a listing that specifies Windows 10 22H2 or newer is more precise than “Windows 10.”

Check storage on the installation drive

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Find the drive where you plan to install the game and read its available space.

Published storage is the space the installation is expected to need under the stated listing. Leave additional headroom for updates, temporary installation files, shader caches and the operating system. A drive that barely meets the listed number can fill during a large patch and produce installation or performance problems.

Identify the active GPU on a laptop

Many laptops have integrated graphics in the processor and a separate graphics chip. dxdiag can show more than one Display tab. Record every adapter, then determine which one the game is configured to use. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game after it is installed and review its GPU preference. A laptop may also reduce CPU and GPU power when running on battery or in a quiet thermal mode, so compare performance while connected to its power adapter.

Compare each requirement field correctly

Make a side-by-side checklist instead of judging by a single component name. A PC can exceed a memory requirement while failing the graphics feature or storage requirement that the game actually needs.

Requirement field What to compare on your PC Why a simple match can mislead
Operating system Windows edition, release and 64-bit status A newer CPU does not make a 32-bit installation compatible with a 64-bit-only game.
CPU Exact model and, when stated, generation Core count or a family name alone does not show single-thread simulation performance.
GPU Exact graphics-card or integrated-adapter model Two GPUs with similar names can have different architectures, drivers and feature support.
Video memory Dedicated VRAM reported for the active GPU System RAM is not a substitute for dedicated VRAM; integrated graphics borrow system memory and behave differently.
System RAM Installed memory available to Windows Background applications and the operating system reduce what the game can use.
DirectX and features Required API version and the GPU’s supported features A DirectX version number does not guarantee every feature level or shader capability a game may use.
Storage Free capacity on the installation drive and drive type An SSD requirement is separate from the amount of free space.
Network Broadband access and any required account or online service A game can launch locally yet require an online connection for streaming, authentication or world data.

CPU: match the specified model, not just the brand

Open-world simulation workloads often update many objects, vehicles, agents or systems at once. If the listing names a particular processor generation, compare your exact model and generation. A CPU with more advertised cores is not automatically faster in the game’s main simulation thread. If your processor is below minimum, reducing resolution may not solve the problem because resolution mostly changes the graphics workload.

GPU and VRAM: check the actual adapter

Compare the model shown under Display with the model in the requirement table. Do not substitute the amount of system RAM for graphics memory. Integrated graphics reserve part of system memory and can have lower bandwidth than a discrete card. A graphics card may also meet a model-number comparison yet lack the driver or feature support required by a newer rendering mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RAM: capacity is only one part of the check

Use the installed-memory figure from dxdiag, then account for the browser, recording software, launchers and other programs that remain open. When available memory is exhausted, Windows can move data to storage. That swapping can appear as repeated frame-time hitches even when the average frame rate looks acceptable.

DirectX: version and feature support are related but distinct

DirectX is a set of Windows components that allows software, particularly games, to communicate with video and audio hardware. The version displayed in dxdiag is an initial compatibility check. The game may still require a GPU with a particular feature level, shader model, ray-tracing capability or driver branch. Treat a failed feature requirement as a compatibility issue rather than something a graphics-quality slider can always fix.

Understand what minimum and recommended really mean

Minimum is a floor

A developer’s minimum configuration is the lower supported system under the conditions used for its listing. It does not promise high settings, a stable frame rate, a particular resolution or identical performance on every laptop. Developers may have used a specific quality preset, scene, driver and game build when establishing that tier, but those test conditions are not universal.

Recommended is a starting point

Recommended hardware is generally a more useful target when you want the publisher’s intended visual settings. It still cannot guarantee a chosen frame rate. Resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, view distance, simulation density, patches and background software all change the workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret a near miss carefully

Being slightly below a minimum CPU or GPU model is not a precise prediction of failure. A model comparison may hide differences in architecture, clock behavior, VRAM, power limits or drivers. Conversely, meeting every listed item does not guarantee smooth play if the laptop overheats, the game is installed on a nearly full drive or the title has a demanding scene that the published table does not describe.

Use a decision table before installing

Build a simple result for each field. Mark it as meets minimum, below minimum or uncertain. An uncertain result needs verification rather than a guess.

Result Action
Every required field meets minimum Install and begin with a conservative preset; expect to tune resolution and simulation-heavy settings.
One field is below minimum Check whether the game has a demo, benchmark or refund policy that lets you test safely. Do not assume other components compensate for a hard API, OS or storage requirement.
Only recommended fields are missed Try minimum or medium settings, then measure frame time and memory use in a repeatable scene.
Several values are uncertain Save the dxdiag report, identify the exact models and confirm the requirement footnotes before purchasing or downloading.

Validate performance after installation

Requirement tables answer compatibility, not the exact experience on your machine. Validate with a repeatable workload and record more than an average FPS number.

Use the game’s benchmark when available

  1. Update Windows and the graphics driver through the normal supported channels.
  2. Close unnecessary launchers, browsers and recording tools for the first baseline.
  3. Run the built-in benchmark using a fixed resolution and preset.
  4. Record average FPS and, if the tool provides them, 1% lows or frame-time results.
  5. Repeat the same test after changing one setting group, such as resolution, shadows or traffic density.

If there is no benchmark, repeat the same busy area, save file or flight route. Avoid comparing a quiet menu or empty field with a crowded city, weather event or large simulation scene.

Watch the active resources

Steam’s performance monitor can report FPS, CPU, GPU, system-RAM and video-memory information while a game is running. Use those readings to identify which resource is saturated rather than guessing from the headline FPS figure.

  • GPU-limited clue: GPU use is near full, and lowering resolution or a demanding visual preset raises FPS.
  • CPU- or simulation-limited clue: one or more CPU threads are busy, GPU use is relatively low and lowering resolution changes little.
  • Memory pressure clue: RAM or VRAM approaches its limit and the game develops repeated hitching, texture delays or disk activity.
  • Thermal clue: performance starts acceptably and declines after several minutes as the system heats up.

These are diagnostic heuristics, not guarantees. A game can have several limits at once, and a frame-rate cap can make utilization appear lower than the hardware’s maximum.

Troubleshoot common failures and stutter

The game will not launch

  • Recheck the operating-system edition, 64-bit status and required DirectX features.
  • Confirm that the game is using the intended GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
  • Install the game’s required updates and supported graphics driver.
  • Verify that the installation drive has more free space than the listed minimum.
  • Check whether the title requires an online connection, account authentication or a separate service.

If the failure identifies an unsupported API, operating system or processor architecture, graphics-quality changes are unlikely to resolve it.

Frame rate does not improve when resolution is lowered

Steam’s hardware guidance treats this as evidence that CPU performance may be the limiting factor. Confirm the clue by watching CPU threads and GPU use in the same scene. Open-world simulation tasks, background streaming and object density can remain CPU-bound even at a low resolution.

Frame rate improves but stutter remains

Check available RAM and VRAM, close background applications and watch for storage activity. Low memory can force swapping to disk and create repeated frame-time hitches. A nearly full drive can also make updates and shader-cache work less reliable. If the problem appears only after extended play, inspect airflow, fan operation and dust buildup; Steam’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends adequate airflow and removing dust when heat is a problem.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Textures or objects load late

Verify that the game is installed on the required SSD and that the drive is not close to full. Reduce texture quality if VRAM is saturated, then retest the same scene. If the game streams a large world, an SSD requirement may be a functional requirement rather than a suggestion.

A laptop performs worse than a desktop with similar names

Mobile CPUs and GPUs can use different power limits from desktop parts with similar branding. Battery operation, quiet modes and blocked vents can reduce sustained clocks. Test while plugged in, select the manufacturer’s performance mode when safe, place the laptop on a hard surface and monitor temperatures. Do not treat a model-family match as proof that two systems will perform identically.

When the GPU is limiting

  • Lower output resolution or use the game’s resolution-scaling option.
  • Reduce shadows, reflections, volumetric effects and ray-traced features first.
  • Lower texture quality only when video memory is close to full; textures can be less costly than resolution when VRAM is plentiful.
  • Set a frame-rate cap that your system can sustain instead of chasing short peaks.

When the CPU or simulation is limiting

  • Reduce traffic, crowd, world-detail, draw-distance or simulation-density settings.
  • Lowering resolution may have little effect, so prioritize settings that reduce the number of simulated or visible objects.
  • Close background programs that consume CPU time.
  • Use a stable frame-rate cap and avoid judging performance in an unusually light scene.

When memory is limiting

  • Close browsers, overlays and recording tools before testing.
  • Lower texture quality or other settings that increase VRAM use.
  • Leave free space on the installation drive for caches and updates.
  • Restart the game after major setting changes if its memory allocation does not refresh immediately.

Compare two PCs or an upgrade plan

When deciding between systems, compare the whole platform and the target experience rather than selecting the machine with the largest single number.

Comparison axis Question to ask
CPU simulation performance Which exact processor sustains the game’s main simulation workload?
GPU raster and ray-tracing capability Which adapter supports the game’s required features at the chosen resolution?
VRAM Is there enough dedicated memory for the intended texture and world-detail settings?
System RAM Will Windows, background software and the game fit without swapping?
Storage type and free capacity Is the required SSD installed, with room for updates and caches?
Operating system and DirectX Do both systems satisfy the exact edition, architecture and API requirements?
Thermals and power limits Can the system maintain performance after a long session?
Target resolution, preset and frame rate Are you comparing both systems under the same visual and performance goal?

An upgrade recommendation cannot be made from the game title alone. A CPU, GPU or SSD change also depends on the motherboard or laptop design, power supply, physical clearance, interface, cooling and available capacity. Identify those constraints before buying any component.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Open the game’s official listing or support page.
  2. Copy minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, VRAM, DirectX, OS, storage, SSD and network notes.
  3. Run dxdiag and save the report.
  4. Compare the exact operating-system version and 64-bit status.
  5. Compare the exact CPU and GPU models, not just product families.
  6. Check installed RAM and dedicated video memory.
  7. Confirm DirectX version and required graphics features.
  8. Check free space and drive type on the installation volume.
  9. Account for laptop power, thermal and integrated-graphics limitations.
  10. After installation, benchmark a repeatable scene and monitor FPS, CPU, GPU, RAM and VRAM.
  11. Change one setting group at a time and record what improves.

What you can conclude with confidence

A PC that satisfies every minimum field has a credible compatibility case, but not a guaranteed frame rate. A PC that reaches the recommended tier is better positioned for the publisher’s intended settings, yet resolution, patches, scene complexity and thermals still matter. The most reliable answer comes from combining the official requirement table, a dxdiag report and a repeatable in-game measurement.
