The quickest reliable check combines the PS5 video-output screen with the specifications for your TV’s exact model and HDMI input. On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to inspect the connected HDMI device’s resolution, VRR and HDR information. Then connect the console directly to the TV’s documented high-bandwidth HDMI port with the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz. Enable VRR and 120 Hz Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and leave Video Transfer Rate on Auto. A compatible game is needed to demonstrate VRR in practice.
Do not treat a 4K label, a 120Hz panel specification, or HDMI 2.1 branding as proof by itself. 4K resolution, 120Hz input, VRR support, the capabilities of the particular HDMI port, the cable path and the game are separate checks.

What the TV and PS5 connection must support
For a PS5 to deliver the signal most players mean by 4K/120Hz with VRR, every link in the chain has to qualify. The TV must accept a 4K signal at 120Hz, the selected HDMI input must provide the required bandwidth, the cable and any equipment between the console and TV must pass that signal, and the console and game must use the relevant features.
| Capability | What to verify | What a successful check means |
|---|---|---|
| 4K resolution | The exact TV model is specified as 4K, usually written as 3840 × 2160. | The display can show the PS5’s 2160p output. |
| 120Hz input | The exact HDMI input is documented for 4K input at 120Hz, not merely a 120Hz panel or motion-processing rate. | The TV can accept a 120Hz 4K signal from the PS5. |
| VRR | The TV and the selected HDMI input list Variable Refresh Rate support. | The display can synchronize refresh timing with compatible PS5 output. |
| HDMI path | The port, cable and any receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device are rated for the required signal. | The signal is not being reduced by a link in the chain. |
| Console settings | VRR and 120 Hz Output are enabled; Resolution is Automatic or 2160p; Video Transfer Rate is Auto. | The PS5 is allowed to negotiate the best available output. |
| Game support | The game supports or benefits from 120Hz and, where applicable, VRR. | An in-game test can show the feature operating; menus or unsupported games may not. |
These requirements are independent. A television can accept 4K at 60Hz but not 4K at 120Hz, or support 4K/120Hz without providing the VRR behavior you expect. A suitable cable removes one possible bottleneck; it cannot add a capability that the TV input does not have.

Find the exact TV model and its capable HDMI input
Read the model number from the TV’s settings, rear label or original documentation. Search the manufacturer’s specification page and manual for that exact model and region. Product families often contain several sizes or revisions with different HDMI capabilities, so a general series name is not enough.
Check the specification wording
- Confirm that the display is 4K, not only compatible with a lower-resolution 120Hz mode.
- Look for an explicit 4K 120Hz input specification. A statement that the panel refreshes at 120Hz can describe internal processing rather than an external 4K signal.
- Confirm VRR support and note whether the manufacturer publishes a supported range.
- Identify which numbered HDMI input supports the high-bandwidth gaming features. Capabilities are model-specific and may not be available on every socket.
- Look for instructions to enable an enhanced format, gaming mode or HDMI bandwidth option. The manual may require this setting before 4K/120Hz or VRR becomes available.
HDMI 2.1 terminology is useful but not a substitute for the port-level specification. Use the manual’s description of the actual input you intend to use.
Prepare a clean test connection
Testing directly isolates the TV and PS5. Disconnect an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter or capture device from the video path temporarily. Connect the PS5 to the TV itself, then add other equipment back only after the direct test succeeds. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends direct connection when high-resolution output is not working.
Choose a suitable cable
Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If you need a replacement or longer lead, use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz. A cable rating is a prerequisite, not a guarantee: it cannot make an unsupported TV port deliver 4K/120Hz or VRR.

Use the documented HDMI port
Plug the console into the input identified in the TV manual as supporting HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz or the relevant high-bandwidth gaming features. If the TV has several inputs, do not assume they are equivalent. Labeling on the socket, on-screen input information and the manual should agree.
Check the signal from the PS5
- Turn on the TV and PS5 and select the HDMI input used for the direct connection.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Inspect the current video-output signal and the connected HDMI-device information. Sony says this area can report the connected device’s resolution, VRR and HDR information.
- Set VRR to enabled and set 120 Hz Output to enabled for the test.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
- Leave Video Transfer Rate on Auto. A lower setting is a troubleshooting experiment, not the normal target for this test.
- Return to the output information and record what the PS5 reports before changing another variable.
The PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. That automatic choice is useful evidence, but it does not replace checking the TV’s exact model and port: a 4K/60Hz result, for example, does not prove that the TV cannot accept 4K/120Hz.
Test with a game that can use the features
Output information and game behavior answer different questions. The console can negotiate a 4K/120Hz signal even when the title currently running renders at another frame rate. Conversely, VRR may be enabled but show no obvious change in a game that does not support it or has a stable frame rate that gives VRR little to correct.
Use a title that explicitly offers a 120Hz mode or is known to support VRR, then check its own graphics or display options. Keep the TV in its documented gaming or enhanced HDMI mode if the manual requires one. Sony notes that VRR results vary by both TV and game, so a lack of a visible effect in one title is not conclusive evidence that the television lacks VRR.

Interpret the PS5 result
| What you see | What it establishes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 4K and 120Hz are reported | The current TV input, cable path and console settings are negotiating a 4K/120Hz signal. | Test a compatible game for 120Hz and VRR behavior. |
| 4K but 60Hz | The current connection is working at 4K, but 120Hz has not been negotiated. | Recheck the model’s port specification, the TV’s enhanced-format setting, cable and direct connection, then verify that the game offers a 120Hz mode. |
| 1080p at 120Hz | The console is reaching 120Hz, but not at 4K. | Confirm that the TV claims 4K/120Hz, use the correct HDMI 2.1 input, update TV firmware, connect directly, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and keep Video Transfer Rate on Auto. |
| No picture when 4K/120Hz is selected | The link is failing at that mode; the cause may be the port, cable, TV setting or an intermediate device. | Recheck the TV-side setting and firmware, try another documented high-bandwidth input and try the included or another certified Ultra High-Speed cable. |
| VRR is not listed or does not appear active | VRR has not been confirmed for the present TV, input, settings and game. | Verify VRR in the exact model specification, confirm the selected port supports it, enable PS5 VRR and test a compatible title. |
If the PS5 shows 4K but only 60Hz
Start with the TV, not the game. Confirm in the manual that the specific input accepts 4K at 120Hz. Some sets reserve their highest bandwidth for one or two inputs, and some require an enhanced HDMI, input-signal-plus or gaming option to be enabled.
Next, remove every intermediary device and reconnect the PS5 directly. Use the supplied cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz. Reopen the PS5 output screen after each change so you know which change affected the result.
Finally, check the game. A title without a 120Hz mode may leave the console at 60Hz during play even though the TV and connection can negotiate 120Hz. The TV specification and the PS5’s connected-device information together are stronger evidence than an in-game frame-rate impression.

- Install any current firmware update offered by the TV manufacturer.
- Move the PS5 to the HDMI input documented for 4K/120Hz or HDMI 2.1.
- Remove an AV receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device and connect directly.
- Replace a suspect cable with the PS5-included cable or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
- Set PS5 Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
- Recheck the output information after the TV has fully switched to the new input.
If the result remains 1080p/120Hz, the TV’s specification, port limitation or cable path still needs to be resolved; changing a game setting alone cannot turn an unsupported input into 4K/120Hz.
If there is no picture at 4K/120Hz
Return to the simplest configuration: PS5 directly into the TV, with the included cable or a suitable Ultra High-Speed cable. Confirm the selected input in the TV menu and inspect the manual for a required enhanced-format setting. Try another HDMI input only if the documentation identifies it as an appropriate high-bandwidth port. Check for a TV firmware update, then restore the PS5 test settings of Automatic or 2160p resolution and Auto video transfer rate.
Do not conclude that the TV is incompatible until those port, setting, firmware and cable checks are complete. Conversely, if the manual documents only 4K/60Hz for every input, a different cable or intermediary device cannot provide 4K/120Hz.
If VRR is missing or seems ineffective
VRR is a separate compatibility check from 4K/120Hz. Confirm VRR in the exact TV model’s specifications and for the HDMI input in use. Enable VRR on the PS5, keep the direct connection while testing and use a game that supports or benefits from VRR.

VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the PS5’s graphical output on compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR televisions and monitors. The result can vary by TV and game. A compatible display may therefore show no dramatic visual change in a title that does not expose VRR controls or that already maintains a steady frame rate.
How to compare TVs for PS5 4K/120Hz and VRR
When comparing models, record the information for the exact size and region rather than relying on a family name or a retailer badge.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer in the manual or specification |
|---|---|
| 4K/120Hz input | Which numbered HDMI input accepts 4K at 120Hz from an external device? |
| VRR | Does that same input support VRR, and is a supported range published? |
| Required TV setting | Must an enhanced-format, gaming or high-bandwidth HDMI option be enabled? |
| HDR and colour at 4K/120Hz | Does the documentation state whether the desired HDR and colour features remain available at that signal? |
| Real PS5 negotiation | Can the PS5 report the expected signal when connected directly with a suitable cable? |
The last check is practical rather than theoretical. A specification tells you what the TV input is designed to support; the PS5 output screen confirms what your particular console, cable, port and settings are negotiating together.

A repeatable decision process
- Read the exact TV model’s manual and confirm 4K, 4K/120Hz input, VRR and the capable HDMI input.
- Enable any TV-side enhanced or gaming input setting specified by the manufacturer.
- Connect the PS5 directly to that input with the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and inspect the HDMI-device information.
- Use VRR enabled, 120 Hz Output enabled, Resolution Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate Auto.
- Test a compatible game, remembering that VRR behavior depends on the title as well as the display.
- If the result is wrong, change one variable at a time: TV input or setting, cable, direct path, firmware, then PS5 output setting. Recheck the reported signal after each change.
A confirmed 4K/120Hz report proves that the current combination is working; it does not mean every HDMI input on the TV has the same capability. A confirmed VRR option proves that the console and display can expose VRR, while the in-game test determines whether a particular title actually uses it.
